It wasn't mentioned in any episode how old Martin is.

Earlier in this thread, I posted that..  since the law is you have to be 35 when you take office as President, then Martin would have to be at least 32 now, to be able to run for president in 2028. Or he'd have to be at least 28 now to run for president in 2032.

Then I *speculated* that he's 28 now and that he and Smitty adopted their teenaged children when they were in elementary school and Martin was around 21.  All speculation on my part. This theory might keep Nicole's age four years lower than if Martin were 32 now.

But all of that was me just thinking aloud (speculating/pondering) on this thread.  We really don't know how old Martin is yet.

We heard today that he's put out feelers for funding for a presidential run ...  but don't know if that's for 2028 or 2032.  I guess it's more likely 2028 based on the dialogue, but I don't know.

Ok, thank you. Maybe that's why I thought he was in his late 20s.

Either way, it's still confusing that Martin's ambitions are to run for President right now. He's probably been a congressman for a short time especially if he is only in his late 20s.

Haha...I thought of that when writing my comment as well.

It's just a lot to think Martin might be in his late 20s, already an established congressman, and believes he has enough pull to secure candidacy. On top of that his mother is already a grandma to two high school aged children even though she looks like she can be their mother. And while all these things can be true and possible, it's just a lot of stretching of the imagination because the ages just don't seem to align well for most of the characters IMO.

This is how I feel about villains too. Tho I am also more lenient with a couple of the eventual cartoon villains, but villains like Iris, old John Dixon and especially Roger had so many layers, that they added to the show so much. Making it more interesting on a daily basis.

Others became so one note over time that they certainly did not need to be on all of the time like some became.

It is way too early to be acting like Leslie is overexposed. This is the first week she has actually gotten more scenes too. The first two weeks she did not have many scenes and most of the scenes she was in were super short. I think if they give us plenty of backstory that can add layers to her character and motives, she can stay good tv for awhile.

I was not a fan of how this episode was directed and edited to make it seem like Nicole's event had more attendees than it did. The fake crowd noise and applause made me roll my eyes.

a couple if things:

political campaigns on soaps have never had anything to do with reality. if the show is floating this presidential nonsense now, no way they’re going to wait three years to move forward. so, yeah, martin has to be at least 34.

as for nicole, i suppose she could have gotten pregnant in medical school —  23-24 — which would make her late 50s. of course, as the ‘sensible’ sister, i would have expected her to get pregnant after she began her residency — at least 26 — 26+35=61.

as new viewers come on, they will continue to raise the question. it a problem that could have been so easily avoided, but i just don’t see any way for mvj to square this circle.

I really do not think Martin's 'run for president' is ever going to materialize on-air. It's a story point about his ambitions vs. his skeletons in his closet.

I agree. I'm trying to focus less on the "what if's" and more on what I'm seeing on screen. The most interesting element of the story is what skeletons he has in his closet and that's what I'm focused on, not an imaginary run for president that will never happen.

Same goes for the ages of the characters. I thought it was incredibly stupid to give Smitty and Martin teenaged kids but those same kids ended up fitting in perfectly and actually made me like their parents. I'm learning I need to be patient and trust the process. Nothing is happening exactly the way we think it is and I believe the writers will continue to surprise us.

It’s purely anecdotal but my partner who does not watch soaps and I got him watching this show, has literally never brought up a single question about character ages. I personally don’t care either and it hasn’t affected my viewing of the show. I enjoyed the family scenes with the teenagers yesterday. It was already mentioned they adopted the kids when they were young which would imply Martin and Smitty were younger as well so I’m fine with it all.

I also think Karla Mosley has great chemistry with her onscreen daughters and the way everyone interacts they don’t feel like her sisters as some have implied. I clearly see two exasperated but supportive daughters in their portrayals.

All of this is such small potatoes to the [!@#$%^&*] the other soaps have done with uneven SORASing of some characters while not others born at the same time or before. Truly none of this bothers me or takes me out of the show.

Just offering a different perspective.

@AntoyneI agree with what you said about the ages. I find the relationships to be believable. The only characters I don't find believable or to have chemistry are Derek and Ashley. Beyond that all of the family relationships and friendships are believable.

Agree.  The most compelling narrative on the show right now is about how Nicole's world is about to be blown up by a "have not" in society. Although MVJ is bordering on campy with Dana/Leslie's cheesy revenge it's fun to watch and resonates a little deeper than camp because Dana has lost out, not had great luck etc. etc. and we want to see how far her bitterness will go or will she ever reform. Not to mention the excellent Ms. Mann's excellent acting chops. And you can have a stuck up, wealthy prick like Martin shooting for the presidency which can also be compelling (as long as you have a performer who can act). Balance, tension, diversity all make for a more compelling show.

    • Hooray we made the exact same critique to Londonscribe!!!!!
    • I don't think they had any idea who he was this time last year. I think they were keeping their options very open. Same with totally dropping the Trina romance that was spoiled for him in the mags once FV clearly took a shine to him. Frank's priorities are bright and blazing in one color. I do think Gio and Emma seem to have worked out given that she is very dry and sarcastic and he is like a hot golden retriever, but I'd still play the field or explore quads with both with very different people - Emma with a scheming young man (of color), Gio with possibly Trina or someone else, or even a boy. Then maybe put them back together, who knows. But of course none that will happen.

    • He definitely got lost in the shuffle last year. First, they were implying that he was Drew’s son, then he was nothing more than just Violet’s bff

And then they changed him to being Dante and Brook Lynn’s son, which was clunky at first but I’m enjoying the storyline now.
    • GM is adorable, charming and fun onscreen despite months of nothing to do until recently, and has a bodacious bod. I'm not cosigning the show or this story - I haven't watched a full episode in over a month - but I think we're all taking the small victories in 2025 at this point. I'm open to testing this theory!
    • I think Jason might've posted some numbers for the syndication a while ago and the numbers for Falcon Crest was horrible. Like 1.5 rating or something, which was terrible.    ETA: it was actually Paul Raven:   New to syndication 60 min Fall Guy 67 markets 3.1/8 Falcon Crest 110 markets 1.1/5 To get into the top 40, you needed a 4.6/9 rating for reference - and Falcon Crest managed to get into a lot of markets to begin with. In the fall of 1985 Dynasty, Dallas and Knots were syndicated (show / rating / share / coverage % / markets): Dallas 3.4 10 51.7 92 Dynasty 3.4 10 48.7 47  Knots Landing 3.3 10 12.5 20  So, Knots as an example trippled Falcon Crest's rating with 20 markets - I'm sure those were major ones but it just goes to show you how much Falcon Crest bombed in syndication.
    • It's not bad but the stories move too slow. It's the same problem when Dan O'Connor was CO-HW with Van Etten, they have a million stories and they all drag on endlessly with no resolution. I'd argue the majority of the stories airing now are good but you get sick of waiting months for something to happen.
    • Thanks. I must have missed that period entirely for Lifetime.
