According to me.

Mona was way more often Erica’s enabler than she was the person stepping in to tell her like it is. She spent years wringing her hands and staring in disbelief as Erica did Erica sht, and part of her always felt like there was more good than bad in her daughter, so she always attempted to get her to see things rationally. Then Erica would still end up doing Erica sht. Even in the very few cases where Mona would get aggressive with her, Erica never shrank down the way Dani did in response to Anita today.

Everyone is indeed free to have their own interpretation, and you don’t have to be a soap opera expert to have one, but I figure if you’ve only see a year of a show, you’d be interested in the interpretations of those who’ve seen much more of it.

Today's episode is definitely my favorite so far. Everything from last week came together nicely.

I loved the disdain Anita had for Dani. I also loved how the family came together and the cracks that are very prevalent. Jacob & Naomi are definitely going to have trouble because of the family and his job as a cop.

I've come to the conclusion Martin is just a dick but I loved how he seemingly showed some type of affection for Smitty today.

Derek actually made an impression on me today and I saw the makings of a triangle with Ashley and Andre.

Like I said earlier, this was my favorite episode by far. I can't wait to see how this continues to unfold.

Thank you.  Figured it was time to finally jump in.

Also wanted to add that Anita's "Stephanie Forrester" side is coming out. I also think she's Hayley's long lost mother. I feel like there's been small anvils. But I'd really love for a male Dupree to come out of the shadows. They can retcon a Black sheep who got kicked out or chose to walk away.

Truly wild watching the bulk of the white cast of a soap opera reduced to talk-to and reactors after the fact to the main Black plot. Refreshing! Meanwhile, Derek stares at AHN-dre and Ashley and mentally drafts tonight’s 4chan post. I do wish we'd gotten to see Dani and Pamela just sitting here knocking back drinks at Uptown AbFab-style for awhile.

Bill and Hayley's living room is, uh, different.

And yeah, Anita and Dani are in no way Mona and Erica. Anita has a hold on her that seems very strong and at times toxic, which may have contributed to part of Dani being who she is (including re: Chelsea). Anita is the one giving Edward Quartermaine or Lucinda Walsh here to me, while Vernon so far seems to be the soft power.

I am about to re-watch but have to say, today felt emotionally off for me. The characters witnessed a traumatic experience, but nobody is crying. Nicole, Pamela, and many others instantly forgave Dani. The family seems more concerned with their reputation than the fact someone could have been murdered. Maybe the Duprees are more cold blooded than I realized.

They're rich, powerful and I think, per most soap dynasties, used to a degree of drama. Dani's gun was full of blanks and she's likely pulled stunts before. For families like that (or the Kennedys or Bushes or whatever IRL example we could cite) it is often about control first, trauma second. Hence the reason they were all there in the first place (Martin).

In the interviews, they mentioned they film six episodes a week. It's remarkable the leaps the show has taken in production, timing, etc. in the first few days.

Karla has absolutely smashed this. Dani has not only directly interacted with more characters than anyone else by far, but the range of emotions has been broad. Think of a Silk Press Sheila, Nicole or Ashley - they've all been basically in the same range of emotion and tone in their scenes.

Um, Dana/Leslie, obviously doesn't know about Andre's father....

Overall, Episode 6 really showed the conflicts within the Duprees. I'm totally digging this.

Well... I haven't said I am not interested in interpretations. But I also don't feel like I need to watch a show from beginning to end to be able to make a comment about something I have seen. I was speaking about things I know from watching already.

Your comment was just... that you came and told me it's not how their relationship was. That was it. Period. Well... To me... In the episodes I've seen... It is. Can you understand that? I don't know what else to say.

I can't change my mind about something just because someone else says to me that "it's not how it is." That's why I asked according to who. I needed more information. Maybe it was a known thing, a quote from the creator, the headwriter. I wanted to know who should I be listening to when I'm being corrected. Now when you tell me that it's your interpretation... I will think about it... And in the future if I change my mind... I'll tell you I agree with you.

But for now... I still stand by what I said. And everything you described about them can be true in one moment in time... Say when Erica was younger. And this may have changed or turned to what I am seeing in the later seasons. That makes both of our impressions correct. I've had periods in my life where my mother was somewhat supportive even though she is narcissistic... And I've also had periods where she's been so negative and evil towards me... You can't imagine. I am just giving an example that these things are not always perfectly constant.

And I hope you don't take my message as arguing. I am just trying to explain my view.

According to Karla in an interview, the production hadn't received all of its equipment for lighting and other modes of production at the start of filming.. so I think the improvement comes because they received those pieces of equipment.. plus some of the directors had never directed soaps before so they were also learning the 'soap opera technique'.

Today was the first episode that MVJ didn't write, that honor went to Lynn Martin today.. with Ron C as the breakdown writer.   It seemed less exposition then the episodes last week, but I have a feeling those first five episodes were written by MVJ while pitching the soap to the network.  Sometimes creators have to provide a few sample scripts in order to set up the story and convince the network that the show concept has legs.

The last two eps are a huge step up on every level but especially dialogue, though I thought a lot of eps 3/4 were strong (and the early scenes in ep 2? with Dani and Anita). The only confirmed weak link for me remains the Morgans and Robo-Martin. Jury is out for me on Chelsea and Naomi, who have good and bad moments.

I don’t mind any of the above, to be honest, and I think my hate towards the character is still mostly diegetic. From a viewer’s POV, I recognize KM’s growing talent in the role and the layers she’s adding. I’m just ready to see her disappear for an episode or two. We’ve now had three “Dani is a crazy btch!” cliffhangers across six shows. I almost expected to fade out on an empty pill bottle next to her unconscious body today. I think part of why I feel disconnected from some of the other characters is that we’ve spent so much time on Dani and this storyline and we haven’t seen enough of the family existing outside of reacting to her latest antics.

They were. I think MVJ seemed much more comfortable on eps 4 and 5, where there was less exposition needed. Her work on 5 (Friday) in particular reminded me of some of her GH soliloquies.

Same.

I thought this was Karla's best episode, acting wise.  I didn't think she was OTT during the scenes when Dani was holding the gun - it was the right about of crazy.

Leslie and Eva are the duplicitous duo of this show.  I love them!

Ron Carlivati wrote a pretty good episode.
