I can only say this - when thе camera-spiel technique is used properly... with good direction... it can actually help the narrative. I gave "Dancer in the dark" as an example.

It's not only the shakiness that disrupts me... it's the inappropriate moments when the camera is shaky and going from face to face while people are just casually talking. Or just moving from left to right on the same face. It's a technique that if you are going to use... you have to be very careful... because the end product MAY look like Guiding light.

I've seen amazing movies that have camera-spiel (play of the camera) and I'm okay with it. But in Guiding Light it does not work.

I'm not saying ATWT was good towards the end or that Goutman was anything other than an abomination. I'm just saying ATWT was the most salvageable of any other cancelled soap towards the end. It hadn't gone full exterior and held-hand camera, it still had it's original core family around (albeit in a weakened state), and it had a lot of veteran actors still on the show that could have come back to front and center with the right writing. It even had vaguely interesting stories still going on. Not enough to warrant a daily viewing but enough to interest one to check in periodically.

I can't really comment on All My Children as I never watched the ABC soaps. Of the soaps I'm familiar with that got cancelled, ATWT was the most recognizable to its roots. But kind of like an 80-year-old is recognizable to their 10-year-old self.

I was still a daily viewer of ATWT at that time. If Goutman had pre-taped the finale we could have had Nancy narrate that last day, as was intended. Beck offered to step away & let Martha play out Lily's end. Goutman NO. STILL no story for Lisa!!!! Then, Reed & Luke, no consummation, instead Reed is dead. And, this all after 2 years of drek. When CBS mandated the new production model for GL, they mandated a different style of narrative, story-telling & Oakdale was stuck with pod stories, rather than the traditional tapestry weaving storylines. Honest, I understand what you're saying. We just must agree to disagree. It's not that I don't respect your opinion. Mine is just different.

I agree 100% The show had been badly damaged by years of abuse, but there was enough of a familiar core remaining. The right PTB could have salvaged it, if P&G and CBS had given them enough time, patience and support. There was no longer any "will" to save Oakdale, alas, even though there was still a "way."

AMC had also been badly decimated for years before its cancellation, but shortly before it was axed, the show's two best head writers (Agnes Nixon and Lorraine Broderick) were allowed to return and clean up the mess. They worked miracles with the garbage they inherited, and Pine Valley was looking up. It felt like Pine Valley once more. AMC would still be with us, had the will had been there among the suits at ABC.

I'd say EON was the most salvageable at the end of its' run, if only b/c the show was still recognizable.  All it might've needed was a stronger HW (or the return of Henry Slesar).

This is one of the reasons why ATWT's last years just make me angry to even think about - so much of their last 10-15 years. Many of the pieces were still in place. Yet we got so much heartlessness, callous, and sickness with people who were clueless or ashamed of ATWT's essence - and as a bonus, a steady stream of stunt casting that no one asked for and led to a slew of characters being ruined.

I don't really care about how location shots looked as that was never what I watched soaps for. You could bring F.W. Murnau back from the dead, I'm still not going to sit through Danielle pawing all over Craig as she calls him "daddy."

Which is tragic, because, for many years, ABC and CBS appeared to be very invested in their soaps.  More so, I would say, than NBC, whose interest, IMO, was half-hearted.

NBC never really recovered in daytime from their ratings drop in the second half of the 1970s. The only highlights you could say NBC had in daytime in the 1980s and 1990s were supercouple Days but even that collapsed at the end, Santa Barbara Emmy/SOD awards run but that didn't translate into ratings, and Reilly Days which shook up daytime at a level not seen since ABC's huge rise and domination some 15 years earlier.

    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.

    • I started a separate thread for the same tribute, but of course it can be discussed wherever. doesn't matter where. Fyi  Jason Cook, Staci Greason, and Eileen Davidson will be there as well as Reckell and some of the current cast Thread for Live tribute to Drake https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/68987-days-currentformer-actors-live-video-tribute-for-drake-hogestyn
    • Seeing Nicole and Martin together reminds me of watching Alice with Mickey Horton in the 90s and 00s. The seem more like peers than mother and son.  The younger half of the cast (35ish and below) is playing younger, and the older half (35+) is playing older.
