That's definitely one way to pull the family together. Nothing like a good old soap story about a baby facing death and another family member being the "salvation", especially the estranged family member. Even though it's cliche, I'm looking forward to seeing our little Spencer family focused on something other than substance abuse.

Does anyone else notice a stunning similarity between the recent breakdowns/spoilers and Guza's old breakdowns/spoilers?

I do. This is still a very man centric show. And while I have absolutely nothing against a man centric story (or two), there are no current goings on that indicate to me that GW has any intention of making this show about women.

Guess NLG should have held her tongue, cause now she just looks dumb for singing his praises.

As Lainey said....wake me when Lacy are back together and have a story. And I'm not talking about Tracy having heartfelt hospital scenes with Luke. That's been done, and while I'm sure they will rock it.....it just sounds like a retread of what's been done several times over already.

About GF- I don't care. I could expound on that, but it would be a waste of time.

I don't think it's GW any more than I thought it was Guza. Somewhere back in the 90's - before either man - TPTB made the decision that TG and MB were the stars of the show. GH has always been more man-focused than woman. Look at the families, they are all patriarchies. Not a single matriarchy in the bunch. Sometimes you've just got to play the pieces on the board. Root change takes a lot longer. I'm interested in one example outside of Aunt Ruby of a truly female-headed household. On OLTL Vicki and Dorian were always heads of their own households and on AMC Erica was the ultimate Matriarch. GH has never had the equivalent - even Bobbie's family was either Brock's or Tony's.

Here is an artcile from GW today on his thoughts on characters (this will make soapboy happy although I will believe it when I see it)

Very little gets past Garin Wolf, the newest head writer for ABC's soon-to-be only soap opera, "General Hospital." After nearly a two-hour phone interview, he touches on the challenges of holding the daytime drama together, amping up favorite characters, introducing new ones and avoiding the speculation that the network may cancel the show after 48 years (word of its fate probably will be announced in 2012). Already ABC has a new Katie Couric talk show pegged for "GH's" long-time home -- 3 p.m. weekdays. "Katie" is slotted to debut in September of 2012. Meanwhile, ABC has the option of moving "GH" to another time period or getting rid of it altogether. Needless to say, he has a lot of his plate and many fans, and actors and crew members are depending on him to save the ship.

So far, his turn as head writer has been mixed by fans, but Wolf says he's just getting started. He has plans up his sleeve. For this first installment of this interview and what he plans to do, Wolf looks over the characters he has on the canvas and what he wants to do with them. He also teases about old favorites he'd like to see return.

Here are his thoughts on an array of characters:

Luke Spencer. "There's no filter. There's no facade. I love the character. He'll be dealing with his alcoholism but in a different way."

Laura Spencer . I'd like for her to return only if she came back (being) different. People have to change. Characters have to change. They have to get their comeuppance. They have to go from saint to sinner back to saint again. They have to be redeemed. If she comes back, it would have to be as someone new. That goes for anyone on our canvas ... and just because (Genie Francis) isn't around doesn't mean (Laura's) presence can't be felt in other ways. She could come back and run Kelley's. (Laughing). I would NEVER do that to Laura."

Tracy Quartermaine. "What's new about Tracy to tell? Well, she has that long history with (New York mob family) the Soleitos. She is the widow of the godfather. She was a 'godmother.' It's going to come back to bite more than her, though."

Franco. "Oh, he's back, and what he does will be felt for a very long time. I wanted to bring (James Franco) back and do it as simply as possible because of his schedule. It's not easy getting him. He has a huge schedule."

Jason Morgan. "When I started this job over the summer, my buzz phrase was 'sometimes they come back.' My buzz phrase for the fall is 'don't assume.' You don't know everything about Jason."

Damian Spinelli. "He has an epiphany coming."

Steve Webber. "I love the actor (Scott Reeves) is great. The day I told him (Steve) has a secret he lit up. That is what will make him fun in the next few months."

Alan Quartermaine. "I have something fun in my mind for him."

Sonny Corinthos. "He's got some things to do that he's never had to do before. That's a fun challenge for me because (he) has been on the show for a long time and finding something new for them to do is not always easy."

Elizabeth Webber. "She has a new role to take on."

Bobbie Spencer. "Bobbie will have her time. Yes. It's very interesting when it comes to the people who have contacted me and said they want to come back."

Audrey Hardy. "Again. I would never bring her back and have her do the same old thing. She'd have to do something new and different."

Amy Vining. "You know which actress and character I really miss? Amy. When you mention her, you bring up sadness (over the actress, the late Shell Kepler). There are things you don't bring up because it causes pain in the real world. You just want to remember her for who she was. The character always said what she thought. She was a wonderful character to use because she let things slip all the time. I would not recast her. But you can bring on somebody like her. In my head, I have a character like her."

Olivia Falconeri. "She has a whole new hell to deal with."

Kristina Davis. "All I can say about her is this: Look at her roots. Look who she comes from. There's a lot to her that can explored if you take her down that path."

Love that Luke and Tracy were tops of the list (can we NOW be done with the Laura speculation???).

JJ quitting is great. Hate that Siobhan was wasted on him and really wonder if it was worth loosing Greg Vaughn? Maybe the soap gods will be kind and bring GV back. I'm sure we could find someone for him to play with AND I love that forbidden chemistry with Tracy. Dreams….

I guess this means Aiden will be recast as well.

I'm wondering who named the characters in that order, GW or the interviewer.

Let's see if he delivers. I feel sorry for the guy, he is going to go down as the writer that killed GH, if it gets cancelled. But he shouldn't talk about stuff just to please people, then not follow through. THat DOES make him look like Guza. So okay. He can show he's different by actually doing something with these characters.

Remos you know I agree: re GV and JE. DANG. They could've been hot. They WOULD'VE been hot. JJ, eh. Much like GF, and others, way overrated in terms of talent. But I can't blame him, he hasn't been given much in the time he's been back. Since I'm not watching, I don't know, but did his drug addiction story just get dropped? Yeah, that would frustrate me to the point of quitting, too.

No, the drug addiction story is continuing but it's more his struggle to resist rather than a complete redux of GV's story (which is what I feared). They have solved part of the story but not who was behind it all. That part is on-going but like Tracy's past, it seems on hold while AZ dealt with Lisa and then being hurt.

I'm not convinced that GW will be the writer who "kills GH", he might very well be the one to take it into the next incarnation - whatever that will be. There is so much politics around GH and soaps in general that I don't believe anyone completely.

    • I was a bit confused with the Paige storyline at first but it's also helped that people on the board have been so kind to fill in gaps for me. It is nice to have a soap to watch again as I have not watched a soap in a very long time. It's also rare to see characters talk to each other without the scenes being cut into every 90 seconds. That's encouraging. So far so good. I am going to miss Raven as she added so much. I hope this doesn't mean that I'll see less of Geraldine as she is another character I'm drawn to. Hope Raven's absence is not a long one.
    • @Ryanc2 Welcome -you've got a lot of catching up to do! We talk about Derek/Ashley, but how much do we really know about Naomi/Jacob apart from they have a bedroom set to make out in? Maybe more time needed to be spent in the first months establishing them better-(give them a proper set for a start) as well as the Bill/Ted dynamic and other familial relationships and ditch Hayley/Derek altogether or make them supporting/talk to for Jacob/Naomi.
    • I’m glad we’ve spent enough time with the character to know how shed Brooke Logan her way through this.
    • Felicia becomes more layered/balanced in the early 90s (circa 1991/1992/1993). She leans more into the more down to earth element that you like, while still being Felicia of the 80s. The process starts in 1989.. but doesn't really become apparent until the early 90s. Iris was the rare connector character with her having a role at the hospital (I think she's on the board), working at Cory Publishing, and having romantic flirtations/connections with a lot of the male characters between 1988 and 1994. Which resulted in her having interactions with the other female contemporaries (Donna, Felicia, Rachel) even if the three didn't always interact with one another. Writing her off in the fall of 1994 severed one of the main connections/bridges with the different orbits. Irony that the show didn't see her value.
    • Which is why I feel that when they do introduce that family it will more than likely be Jacob's family. Otherwise why establish them slowly but surely?
    • ROFL. priceless. There are also countless mentions how wonderful Claire is, but I could not stomach watching a compilation of that!
    • The air...is looooooooooong gone.
    • From what I remeber reading, it seemed as if it all completely falls apart post-Labine and Mayer around a year later when Ben is sent to prison around June 1976. Ben's departure undoes one of the major story threads that had carried the show for many months. Without a catalyst of Ben's ilk in the wings, there wasn't much to carry either story for the two women (Betsy and Arlene). Arlene was briefly paired in a one-sided attraction with Ray before becoming involved with Ian Russell. I believe the Schneiders introduced Ian as a suave businessman interested in Arlene who was also considering a dalliance with Meg. That would have been delightful but Upton arrives and quickly shifts the narrative to Arlene as a kept woman / prostitute (though I only think she was sleeping with Ian, but maybe I'm wrong). I think it is Upton who transitioned Ben from complicated heel with a romantic appeal to a tortured, brooding romantic lead with a complicated past. I'm not sure that was the smartest move. Upton must have believed that Ben's near rape was his redemption arc, but I don't think it was enough. There is something deliciously wicked about Ben becoming involved with Mia after the death of Mia's stepson Jim Marriott, who had confessed his love for Mia before racing off on his motorbike and being hit by Ben's car. I could see the appeal, but I don't think it completely worked. There should have been an angle involving Betsy (who had been a reporter I think when she first appeared) investigating Jim Marriott's accident, possibly with Jamie Rolins who was I believe district attorney. Betsy and Ben growing closer as Betsy grows closer to the truth. Ben confiding in Mia as Andrew continues to make Ben his surrogate son setting in motion the same dramatic situation with Andew's second wife being in love with his son/surrogate son. I think Betsy and Jamie Rollins were together while Ben was in prison, but I don't think they had much to do. I may be wrong. Meg should have gone after custody making it seem like Jamie and/or Betsy were unfit leading to a case with social services which would have brought Diana Lamont back into the mix causing emotional angst for Diana as she works with Jamie to provide him the child she couldn't. The Felicia / Eddie / Charles stuff seems rather generic once you get to Charles' paralysis and sexual dysfunction. Felicia's pregnancy and her death seemed to bring an end to a story that really wasn't strong enough to be frontburner. The Lynn Henderson stuff always seems rather movie of the week rather than developed for an ongoing story. In the past, I agreed that it might have been possible that the story had become so disjointed that they needed to freshen up and add new story elements as Upton did but others have suggested that the elements themselves should have just been considered. For example, I'm not a huge proponent of Rick and Cal as a couple, but I do think there was some mileage of actually reintroducing Barbara into the mix trying to reconnect with Hank, carrying a torch for Rick, causing conflict in the Sterlings marriage with Bruce and Van taking sides over Barbara vs. Cal, and Barbara maneuvering her way into the Beaver Ridge Complex making her business partners with Rick and Meg, which would give her a new rival. When Ben returned, there should have been a question of how true his redemption was rather than just jumping in head first to a new role. I think the Schneiders might have been script writers for Ann Marcus on "Search for Tomorrow," but I may be wrong on that. Upton introduced the Marriotts in Janaury, 1977. Christian Marlowe's Andy Marriott seemed to be in the mold of Ben. I don't know if the story was any good, but I think Upton towards the end hinted an Andrew / Meg / Andy storyline which I thought would have been interesting. I think Upton had some interesting concepts, but from my understand, the execution was awful.
