X-Men: MCU Adaptation Thread

I figured I’d start a thread about this given the recent discussions here on X-Men ‘97. Per Deadline, Michael Lesslie, who recently wrote the screenplay for Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes has been selected and is in negotiations to write the screenplay. No director or casting attached yet, but development could still take some time.

Meh. I am on the fence. I have to see the final product to get excited. After years of Bryan Singer's crappy interpretations, I am hesitant. I feel like the expectation is going to be even higher given how well X-Men'97 came to be. I don't get how they wouldn't just give the role to Beau DeMayo. But whatever.

I am stunned that Disney+ has never done a X-Men series. That'd be more better than show given that it can run for eons like a soap opera.

I still wonder what Beau did that was so unforgivable that led to his firing. Some have claimed he violated a morality clause by having an OnlyFans at one point, while others have claimed he created a hostile work environment. Though he’s back on social media, he’s never commented.

Marvel films tend to go through a number of rewrites or screenwriters for that matter. I think the important thing is they’re starting to develop the X-Men IP again now that they have full access to it. We can only hope they learned the right lessons from X-Men ‘97

Regardless of what Beau did, he seems to be the only modern writer who grasps the concept of the series and respects its history. I am all for letting everyone get a shot, but every X-Men project is going to be compared to X-Men 97 (despite it being animated) going forward.

I stand firm that a live-action series would be smart. Especially, if they mirrored it after the original comic by starting it off with the original five X-Men and building on it like a soap opera. That can then be spun off into other live-action series like X-Factor, Avengers, Alpha Flight, etc.

I am meh. I just watched TBOSAS this past weekend and I loved it. But I don't know how well of a writer Michael Lesslie is for something bigger than Katniss. So I will wait and see.

I admit to being curious as well. Because it's been said it's not about the OFs. But again, people say he makes a hostile work environment, but he always has Season 2 of X-MEN 97 in the bag, written, drawn, and now halfway in post-production. Yet Beau was online frequently interacting with fans and networking/advertising for the show. And he interacted at weekly viewing parties in L. A. with the voice actors and more fans and not one bad story has emerged.  So...what's really going on?

I agree. Especially since the regular comics is coming off one of yet one of their most progressive runs right now so that Marvel can regress them AGAIN back to average x-storying from what I've heard. Seems like fans aren't liking the backwards steps so when the movie is produced...X-MEN 97 might just be the only reference to go on.

Deadline is reporting that Jake Schreier, who recently directed Thunderbolts* (a return to form quality-wise for the MCU IMO), is the frontrunner to direct the MCU X-Men reboot.

I thought he did an excellent job with Thunderbolts* - in a way, that seemed like an audition for the X-Men revolving around a group of misfit characters that come together under a common goal (the mental health plotline was also unusually deep but well handled for the MCU, a quality that would be important for any X-Men project).

    • Haley and Jacob had more chemistry in their small interaction than I ever saw between Naomi and Jacob. Same with Haley and Derek actually - that was one of the few times I can recall Derek ever having any life in him.
    • -- Anita going through Ted and Nicole's wedding album. Really??? -- Dani defending Ted in her conversation with Nicole. Really??? -- Bill wants a child with Hayley. Really??? -- Many people are saying "Dana can't be Eva's mother" because of the way Dana treats her. Maybe she's not her mother, but that biological connection has nothing to do with it. Dana has functioned as Eva's mother all of her life. There's no reason to believe giving birth to her makes the difference. -- Hayley is hilarious for being so clueless and tone deaf when she comments on others' mistakes and flaws. God, she's dumb. -- Alex Alegria continues to suck as Tomas. Soooooo wooden. -- Ambyr Michelle stole the episode.
    • I was fine with Greg and Paige as a couple (ick factors and all, lol).  What I didn't like was how juvenile their push-and-pull was, with Greg alienating her repeatedly and arbitrarily, and Paige leaving him and/or The Sumner Group in a huff, only to come back together, like, thirty minutes later, lol. I get that Greg was not someone who enjoyed sharing his feelings with others, but c'mon.  He was a little too old for all that on-again/off-again [!@#$%^&*]; and so was Paige, and so were we. Mary Robeson wasn't her aunt, though.  Thanks to WBTV's Primetime Soaps app, I was able to rewatch all of S14, and I learned that, in fact, Mary was her aunt - which I guess made Joe her uncle? Truly, I thank the streaming gods for being able to rewatch the final season, because, for the past 30+ years, I never was able to understand how Mary and Joe, Nick and Vanessa, Val's disappearance and Treadwell (and Abby) all fit together; and even now, it still seems a trifle sketchy to me.  (The shortened season and reduced budget wreaked some havoc on the storytelling, did it not, lol?)
    • Oh Lord! They don't dare put her near Jacob.
    • And knowing Hayley she’d somehow feel like she was the victim

    • So not only did Hayley steal her daddy, but now you want Hayley to steal Naomi's husband? LOL.

    • '92. I was looking for when Vanessa called Billy a sonofabitch. Then I got sucked into '92 and got rewarded by finding Vanessa and Mo getting sloshed. (3/6/92, I believe). Then the Blackout...lol, and just kept falling down the rabbit hole. This is lateOct/earlyNov. I couldn't believe my ears!  Reva's marriage to Billy was before they came to town. But yeah... Maybe it was Harley and Gus that CarJack lost to later. thanks! Thanks @Paul Raven  this is a fascinating read.
    • I just have this feeling Bill and Leslie about to be the next big thing. Not sure what that means for Hayley but if they want to be messy they could put her in Jacob's orbit. They had a bit of chemistry during their scene at Orphey Gene's a few months back.
    • You give her alot of credit. I really think she is in her feelings about what she feels Eva did to her. If this was just an act, there really wouldnt be a need to throw away her picture when she was alone. She's not feeling Eva right now and isnt thinking logically, which has been the case for her for much of this plan. I think she'll go back to Eva once she's calmed down but i dont think she's faking She's mad and in her feelings
