With the phenomena of reality tv slowly turning into scripted soap operas... I'm thinking a lot of people are back to craving something that is pre-thought, pre-envisioned, polished and dramatic. I would rather see something I KNOW is scripted than watch a bunch of women pretend they are not fake and not acting out storyline ideas coming from producers. And I'm meeting more and more people that want MORE than the 10 episodes a year shows. People crave continuity. And familiarity. Something they can turn on and expect to see every day, something they can stream every single day. We live in an era, where people want instant non-stop entertainment (just look at the tik tok mania and the meltdowns surrounding it's cancellation) - soaps can and will provide that constant thing. They also have a great binge-able quality about them - another thing consumers crave. You can watch an entire season of 260 episodes of you have the time... in just a few weeks. People do that all the time. Myself included.

I am optimistic that not only will the genre survive and begin to thrive with new soaps... we may also live to see the first... re-booted daytime drama. (Susan Lucci... I see you winking over there). But which one will it be... I'm not sure. I just believe it may happen. And a reboot may mean that it will only preserve the core values, setting and theme... some characters.

'Who are you to tell Erica Kane...' IKTR, LA LUCCI!!

That segment was great. And seeing that OLTL pic just got me teary-eyed.

I have faith that KM can bring it as the wild card given what I saw of her on B&B once Maya went bad, I feel the potential is there. I'm more interested in Dani...just her vibe, her presence...and I remember the actress from OLTL and loving her as a recast.

And I love seeing the spotlight always on the Duprees and how they are such the core four in pictures, promotion, and interviews. A solid place to grow from.

27 sets!!! YES, PLEASE.

And just seeing MVJ is inspiring.

I agree about all of this; however, my only gripe is that soaps need to revert back to 30 minutes. BTG, because it is new, might be the only one that can handle an hour at this point. All the others need to revert back to 30 minutes max.

And I wouldn't be surprised if here in Georgia--especially, in Atlanta, that it becomes the new Mecca for soaps. 27 sets is impressive; however, there is a lot of space here and the studios that I've seen are spacious.

I agree! It will make engagement with the shows way easier and more people, who are not able to watch multiples hours a day, can fit them into their schedule. I believe one of the biggest reasons Bold is still alive and kicking is because it's basically 18 minutes of trash that... you can forgive if it's horrible and try the next day. If someone made me watch a 40 minute Bradley Bell episode... I would literally not be able to do it on a constant basis. You would have to pay me.

It reminds me of when One Tree Hill filmed in North Carolina because of the tax brackets, and I can only imagine Georgia is providing them the same.

As for studio space, Beyond the Gates shoots on a soundstage that is:
15,213 (AREA (sq ft))    127 (LENGTH (ft))    117 (WIDTH (ft))    50 (HEIGHT (ft))

It is specifically that 18 minute factor that makes people say that B&B is the easiest soap to watch, the easiest show to access! It literally demands the least of the viewer.

Back when we were cancelation crazy & the last 4 NY soaps all fell, they should all have been switched to half hour versions of themselves rather than be canceled. I believe it would have made enough of a difference!

Same. The desk clearing scene looked over the top.

The cinematography on this show looks quite different than other daytime soaps. It reminds me of the Tyler Perry soaps on OWN.

Great quote. Reports have shown that white/mainstream audiences do not watch majority black productions because they don't empathize our identify with the characters. The irony is, black people see themselves in the characters when watching predominantly white shows all the time.

I love CBS Sunday Morning. Even when they use the show promote CBS books and productions it's still an informative segment. This was a much needed attention boost.

Same. There's just too much scripted content out there right now. I love watching Only Murderers in the Building because it's 30 minutes so I can get through the season quickly. The 30-minute format would have been better. I suppose it has to do with the amount of advertising they're trying to sell.

    • Some other thoughts on today's show. I don't care for Bill/Hayley as a couple. I think that Bill is sexy and looked good on today's show. But I don't think that him and Hayley really have any chemistry. They seem mostly isolated on the show unless someone like Dani is sparring with one of them. I do wonder what is going on with Bill's hand and why it is trembling. He is trying to keep that from Hayley. I also don't care for June right now. I like Jacob/Naomi but would rather see them do something else than what they are currently doing with June right now.  I liked Nicole/Dani continuing to support one another after the fallout from their marriages. I think it's interesting that Nicole asked Dani if something was going on between her and Andre and Dani lied about it. I do wonder if Dani/Andre are starting to have stronger feelings for each other (maybe even falling for each other a little bit). It does seem like stronger feelings are developing between them and I wonder where that may lead for their storyline. And I enjoyed Anita/Vernon as well. I like that he supports her and wants her to do the reunion with the Articulettes. It does seem like at one of them really doesn't want much to do with her after she reached out on today's show. But maybe they will reunite and there will be drama between her and her bandmates. I am interested in seeing who the show may cast as her bandmates. I hope they get a couple of good actresses in the role.
    • Looks like the Townhouse to me, I've been calling it Paulina's Townhouse (which Marlena and Kayla also use).
    • Angela Bassett was also on somewhere in 1985 wasn't she. The NY soaps did so much for struggling actors. That's one of the reasons I will never stop hoping we get more of them.
    • Oh, yeah as the episode went on, I love that they gave a plausible reason for him to back out. Most soaps who use an idea/story point to define a character would just drop it and make it seem so jarring and out of character. So I love common sense...or the SilkPress craziness...won out.
    • All these years later, and Shelly Burch is still one of the most striking women I've ever seen.
    • I really enjoyed today's show. Today was the most I have ever liked Martin. It was very sweet how he invited Eva to get to know his family. He has good chemistry with her (along with Kat). I liked how she got to know and started to bond with his family including Samantha who was understandably standoffish with her at first. I thought her styling Samantha with different looks at the end was cute. Martin's family is her family now too and I liked how he made that clear to everyone at pizza night at his home. The twins have a new Auntie.

I think it will be interesting to watch Martin/Eva bond along with her bonding with the rest of his family. And seeing how others including Nicole and especially Kat react to that. I thought for a moment that Kat might actually show up at pizza night after Martin invited her but she didn't. I also enjoyed Eva trying with Kat. They do have chemistry together and they are cute, lol. I do think they could end up being twins, but even if they aren't I still enjoy them together. Whether it's sparring or Eva trying to bond with her or whatever.
    • Hahaha. It was worth a try. Alas.
    • There were lots of spoiler pics for week of May 5-9 of Devon/Lily/Holden/Damian/Amy/Nate/Audra. I posted them on the spoiler thread that week because they all looked so pretty. I was hopeful.  Sorry to read in the recaps that it was mostly discussion of Dumas!
    • Random Hump Day Reactions Despite my better judgment about commenting on appearances—what is going on with Philip’s skin? He looks distractingly sunburned. Did the makeup team forget to use foundation? Or powder? Or that they’re broadcasting in high definition? Meanwhile, Kristen looked like the saddest Alice in Wonderland. The dirndl was cute, but everyone in that mansion could desperately use a pop of primary color—and a reason to smile. It’s one thing for Belle to be blinded by love for EJ. It’s another for her to hear him admit to kidnapping Rachel and treat it like a punchline. Overall, there's zero urgency from anyone about getting Rachel or Kat back to Salem. Most of the time, Kristen and Cat seem to forget their long-lost mothers are still being held elsewhere against their will. At least when Doc, Kayla, and Kate went missing, people cared. Paulina even talked to that urn! (Still waiting to find out who was in the urn, by the way…) Raise your hand if you believe Rachel innocently brought up Tate’s baby. If your hand is up, do not click on any suspicious email links today. You’re vulnerable. And finally, deep breaths: Jamey—or someone he edits—named the miracle drug Versavix. Fun fact: real drug names are developed by branding teams after the research is done. Versavix sounds like the draft name someone scribbled during a Red Bull crash and forgot to replace. This isn’t even a good fake drug name. It’s like they forgot that the same show once gave us a literal ‘love potion’ that made Sami fall for Austin. Versavix makes me nostalgic for the days of ‘L-dopa’ and Stefano’s mind control chips, at least they didn’t sound like a discontinued allergy medication. (crud, another day, another broken promise to stop complaining about this).
