Four Seasons and Done

I had been interested in starting this topic for a while now, but I was wondering if we could dig into shows that lasted four seasons and then done due to various reasons. Some shows start off big but ended with a whimper.

Shows strived for that magic number of 100 for a hope of getting syndication deals, but so many failed to reach it. Obviously in the days of streaming that’s no longer relevant but it’s still notable.

Back in the 80’s two of my favorite shows Scarecrow and Mrs. King and The Equalizer suffer this fate, in the the 90’s a good number of sitcoms on both NBC (from Dear John to Caroline in the City) and CBS (Evening Shade for example ) saw this occur along with notable cult dramas as well. In more recent times shows like Ugly Betty and Revenge ended up being four at done.

Just curious on anyone else’s thoughts and examples.

More 1980s dramas to add to your list: Knight Rider, Wiseguy, Thirtysomething, China Beach, Life Goes On

To the CBS comedy list add Major Dad, Dave's World, Cybill, Cosby.

Interesting since in recent years the syndication number has been lowered to more like 80-90-ish episodes (ie three months of daily M-F stripped syndication), so there's a lot of examples in recent years of shows lasting four seasons.

The Equalizer original series was not a big hit yet it became a movie franchise and got a reboot series. The Equalizer reboot season 5 starts this fall, so the reboot will have a longer run than the original.

Which pisses me off to no end, lol.

No offense to Queen Latifah, or to her fans, but speaking as one who grew up watching the original series, I'll always prefer Edward Woodward and his mix of steeliness and fatherly concern over her or Denzel.

Last night, I read Edward Zwick's new memoir, "Hits, Flops and Other Illusions;" and apparently, execs at ABC were very upset when he and Marshall Herskovitz elected to end "thirtysomething" at the end of its' fourth season.  (Up to that point, the show had been the most gratifying experience of Zwick and Herskovitz's careers; but after four years, they felt they had said everything they had wanted to say with those characters).  In exchange for allowing them to end their show on their terms, Zwick and Herskovitz promised the network another show...which is how "My So-Called Life" came to be.

    • One of the dumbest situations (Lando) ever. What audience member is going to invest in a storyline with a recast they don't like and a triangle where one character is short-term? It bombed as it should have done. So much of JFP's tenure just reeks of desperation. I don't get how someone could produce SB (which did have flaws but was often brilliant) but make so many terrible mistakes at GL.   I still think JFP would have worked better as a director and music supervisor. Her music work at SB was top notch.  It just seems that Rea was minimized during JFP's tenure because I can't imagine her okaying so many of these casting choices.

    • We see the same with GH, where Mark Teschner, the casting director, reportedly has less say since Frank Valentini took over. Some producers want to take over every aspect of their shows.  I think Lando may have been a CBS push.
    • No idea but she won Emmys & she was the Casting Director at the same time for both ATWT & GL. She hired Lisa Brown with no job for her. Then Marland made Brown his muse so he created both Iva & Nola for her. But, I think we know that Jill does what Jill wants.
    • I did notice a decline in the quality of the performers being cast once Betty R vacated/retired from her position. We would have been spared from the nightmares of some of the castings that dominated the show in the last decade or so of the soap. JFP was an example of someone, no matter the gender, who had no business being in the position they were in.
    • If Betty Rea was the casting director, why was so much of GL during JFP's reign cast by her? Walker, Deas, Crampton, Lando, etc. JFP takes credit for Dusay as well. What is the point of having a casting director, if you don't let her do her job? What happened when Rea left?
    • So much on here slips my mind but this is the first I remember hearing of Peterson's passing. Very sad. Nell was a thankless role, clearly set up for a cheating storyline with Frank, but Peterson did her best.  Betty Rea Rea was the casting director for the soap opera “Guiding Light” from 1970 to 1996 and simultaneously the casting director for “As the World Turns” from 1979 to 1983.
    • Sorry, just one more post on the Thorntons. How did Ruth and Edna feel about each other prior to Tad dating Dotty?
    • I can't remember exactly but I think it may be 1995 as Jake was trying to hide from a loan shark.
