What year was "Toy Soldiers" released? 1991? Oh, Christ, does that song take me back. I think I was in the sixth grade then, just about ready to start middle school.

The music, of course, is flawless. Listening to it sends all sorts of pleasant feelings up and down the old spine. The lyrics, on the other hand.... Okay, look: I'm not going to suggest the lyrics suck, because they don't. For the most part, the words are equal to the melody in brilliance. But the part about how "it's a sad, sad story" and so forth -- I can't explain why, but even though I know they're essentially describing what led Natalie Maines to write the song in the first place, they just feel ever so slightly "off" to me. As if they aren't as poetic or as carefully crafted as the rest.

But...that's me. I'm sure plenty will disagree.

1989, it actually prevented Madonna's Express Yourself from hitting #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in July of 1989.
