Palmer (AMC) is an easy choice. He definitely was the central villain for many years on the show. His character's schemes was one of the main reasons AMC went up in the ratings during the late 1970s and 1980s.

Adam/Stuart (AMC) As iconic as his nemesis was, David Canary added a lot of complexity and nuance to two characters and made it look easy. Whether he was as sweet as Stuart or as devious as Adam, both characters were the ultimate sun and moon of Pine Valley.

Jack (Terry LEster's potrayal; Y&R) As much as I love Bergman's potrayal, people forget Lester's version of Jack was as equivalent to JR Ewing. As villainous as he was you could still see the sympathetic side of yearning his mother's love while not dissapointing his father.

The Buchanans (OLTL): Another Dallas-esque characterization, Bo, Asa and Clint rejuvenated the soap and sustained its legacy for years to come.

Definitely should add Mac Cory from Another World to this list.  AW was never quite the same after his passing. And has any soap ended with a character that was off the show for 10 years as the final scene- after Rachel and Carl shut off the lights and the screen faded to black in the last episode, the final moment was a still of Mac Cory raising his glass to the audience one last time.

Mason Capwell and Cruz Castillo on Santa Barbara could maybe qualify.

Mason started out as somewhat of a rich sleaze, but his issues with his parents and his romances with both Mary and Julia fleshed him out, and he was hardly ever not front and center, especially with Lane Davies in the role. Gordon Thomson was also really good. Ironically, the one you'd think would have been just as great, Terry Lester [especially since - on paper - Mason and Jack had similar qualities/family structure], seemed to make Mason more of a comic sort of character [yes, the writing, but still].

And Cruz, well...he seemed on the periphery - until he sparked with Marcy Walker's Eden. Then he [and they] was/were everywhere. One could argue to the show's detriment, since, when Eden left, the character of Cruz floundered [with bad writing by then] and never really recovered.

Which is why I'm not surprised that A Martinez left for LA Law at the first opportunity.

    • To be fair, I don't think she was written out as much as not being written for as they had to gear up for the final episode. I'd assume they might've had the option to use her again but they just didn't find the space.
    • Seems Traci and Julie on Days are both shopping at 'Granny's Garments'. You just can't go wrong with a loose print long line jacket (hides those figure faults, gals), a comfy pair of slacks, a scoop neck T and some chunky accent jewelry. And don't forget your crowning glory-a wash 'n' go hair do.

    • I loved the cliffhanger of Xander being arrested for Philip's attack.
    • I've got to say GH is the soap I'm enjoying the most right now, followed closely by Days. I can't wait for Willow's world to come crashing down on her. She is one stupid hoe. To choose Drew over her children is despicable. I'm loving Rory Gibson as new Michael.
    • That could apply to Dani too, and Leslie looking at herself in the mirror being crazy. The gambling scenes were pure fast-forward material.   The best part of the show was seeing Mona.   BTG is slowly becoming background noise when I watch it.
    • It seems like it was tested with all the concern she showed him. Obviously Dani would create a lot more conflict because her sister is Vanessa's best friend, but on the other hand Vanessa could pull the socio-economic class card on Shanice which would make for good conflict.
    • I could buy Belle being drawn to EJ, even being confused/horrified over it... but to actually date/sleep with him is a stretch. Still... this is the soap that had Satan possess a character, underground dungeons, a heart being removed from someone's chest and then slipped back in (Jennifer), and almost every is related by blood and/or marriage... so I can't expect the soap to not have Belle go for it with EJ.
    • Belle doesn't have a "savior complex" she has a half assed martyr hoe complex. See her staying with sponge bob square head Faux Philip(KB)cause he was injured overseas in war & he was "the father of her baby" like it was the 1950s or something. Not out of some true love kinda ish. That's what she told Shawn as to why she couldn't be with him despite cheating with him behind Phil's back. I didn't care but a spade is a spade cause that logic went straight out the window once Shawn moved on with Mimi & stopped letting her string him along. The minute he found someone else & she couldn't string him along while playing house with Phil? It's the minute the facade of her's dropped. Belle just wants to have her cake and eat it too. A self righteous thot who looks down her nose at others Sami, Xander while she lays up with the monster who not only tortured her beloved daddy but her sister & rest of her family. Like her using her daddy "dying" back in 07 as the reason she was having an affair with JKJ Phil & slept with him in her martial bed she shared with her husband. I think it was either before John's funeral or after. Belle's loyalty is too a dick especially one that's not her husbands

Nothing more nothing less you're trying to oversimplify something that doesn't need to be oversimplified. I'm mad big daddy John is going out with his 2 biological kids being dumber then a box of rocks bird brains, who don't even share one brain cell btw the 2 of them. John's legacy deserves better you hear me! 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣 At least he still has Pumpkin Carrie & Paul 🕊
    • They need to put this new Michael on frontburner every day for as long as they can.  They also need to bring in a new love interest (or many) for him.  Give this actor as much material as possible, please! I hope this Drew-Michael nephew-uncle rivalry goes on for the long haul.  I was worried they were leading up to a Drew murder mystery, but that would prematurely end some great long-term soapy storytelling.  The Quartermaines don't need any more dead family members, either.
