I'm kind of a new fan of soaps, but what do people think has made Y&R the top soap for the last 30 years? What did they do so right that other shows couldn't?

I just wanted to say even though TSJ was not the Tucker married to Ashley, he and Eileen have sold me on them as a past and potentially future couple. They have a really nice chemistry.

Agreed. (Even though he is just playing his Todd.)

Bill bell has a talent he would lay the ground to storylines even years before they actually happen, and still when they developed you could be sure of what was coming the kept really good up to 2005, by then the competition diminished soĀ

By now it's just inertia, but in its prime, it was like watching a well crafted movie every day. They had the best acting, sets, score, directing, and writing. There seemed to be so much thought and care into every shot and every reaction. So much of soaps is filling time and recapping the story for those who have missed previous episodes, but the dialogue was so strong that it wasn't boring. If the episode ended with Jill knocking on Kay's door or Jack walking into Victor's office, you knew the next day was going to be good, even though they would be discussing the same topic they've discussed 500 times. I lived for the quips from Jack or Col. Douglas Austin. I always thought the show had great dry humor and never understood why people said it was the least funny soap. I also loved that it focused more on family and business dramas rather than just supercouples. The characters stayed true to their cores and felt relatable. They really stayed away from shock drama much longer than other soaps (succumbed to it after Bell left).Ā
