My interpretation is that they objectified Alex to fulfill their needs in a way that neither Tripp nor Johnny would be willing to do. For fallout I would have preferred someone messier like Tripp. That could have opened up even more story for Allie/Chanel. Unless one of them falls for Alex (which.....eww_) the threesome isn't living up to its full story potential.
