Does your soap have a "Red Swan", a s/l or phrase or character that makes you groan?

On AW when Doug Watson died on May 1st 1989 it necessitated Mac Cory dying & they had to toss out 18 months of story, find a new man for Rachel, let everyone process their grief over the loss of Mac/Doug and someone who shall remain nameless decided that before he died while he was in Maine on business, that he found this artifact that meant something to him ... and he'd had it shipped back home ahead of him. Red sculpture? Red papier mache? Red ugly thing! Seemed like every day was dealing with the mystery of the Red Swan, because every day WAS dealing with it. Got so sick of it! You have anything or anyone like that on a show?

I am just catching up on this year's B&B, and in case anyone missed it, Sheila swapped a couple of labels on a couple of champagne bottles, leading to Brooke and Deacon sharing a drunken kiss on New Year's Eve.

So I started counting the references to those *beep* champagne bottles and that *beep* New Year's Eve kiss.

In January 2022 alone (20 episodes), the show felt it was necessary to have a total of 9 flashbacks of Sheila and her champagne bottles. And it was also absolutely necessary to have no less than 22 flashbacks of Brooke and Deacon on New Year's Eve (trust me, I counted). And that's not even counting all the times the events of that night were discussed by characters on the show.

I bet Passions has a ton of these since they repeated everything ad nauseam on that show.

The reliquary on Y&R. I can't remember the plot at all but I know they said "reliquary" incessantly and that at one point Victoria recreated an ancient reliquary with gumption, spit and paper mache.

I was going to say Melissa Archer's character on Days (Serena?-I think) and that stupid Elephant statue with the blood diamonds in it.  Everyone was talking about that damn statue everyday.  That statue should have been on contract lol.  I don't even know what happened to that statue, but maybe Xander got it after Ben killed Serena.  Or maybe Eric still has it and the blood diamonds lol.

Add in DawnOfTheDead said as if it were all one word! That, too. Where's the emoji for sick to death of it!?

Okay,  bored to tears, that will do.

I was a poster on Usenet at the time, so in RATSc and even though I was posting about ATWT & GL, you still see all the subject lines from Y&R and B&B. And, I wondered what in the heck a reliquary was!

Thinking about the GAG Red Swan & this elephant statue & the reliquary I bet odds are that using an actual wooh-wooh statue or object increases the odds fans are gonna end up making fun of it instead of caring about it.

I absolutely LOVE that you kept that tally, serves 'em right.

Lol.  So the elephant statue asked for $5 dollars an episode?

Libidizone is a good one.

I would like to nominate Sonny's kitchen moss for this, but no one talks about.  Everyone just secretly knows Kitchen Moss is a star..

I..........don't even like you to put that out into the universe, but why not?  Unless someone can tell me what happened to blood diamonds and porcelain elephant the story is unfinished lol.  And if they bring that back Ron will not mention Ben brutally murdered Serena.

    • It makes sense that she got a degree in directing. I've always said she should have been a director. I think she works better at the technical aspects of the show. I think her problem is the emotion/heart of a show.  She always guts the heart of the show she's on and she makes decisions that stop longtime viewers from watching a show. I don't think it's sexism to call that out especially as I've said similar things about Conboy. I've called out Rauch for much worse.
    • "Aunt Blanche" first appears toward the end of this episode, about 57 minutes in.

    • You're probably right. They may have just wanted edits of certain characters. Hopefully the rest is around.
    • Of course!

I'm wondering if there were bits cut from this footage, because to me it seems that may be the case. At 11:23, Laurie tells her psychiatrist that the bar phoned and told her Mark got into a fight and needs to be picked up. It starts to fade to the next scene, you hear some different music begin and get cut off between the static, and where you'd expect to see the aftermath of the fight, we cut back to a later scene of Laurie in bed worrying about what's happening. The credits at the end also show that more than Mark, Laurie and Dr. Northcote should have been in this episode. Another character, Brody, played by Ed Setrakian, is mentioned but not shown. If this is the case, perhaps the original fan who saved this episode has the additional scenes.
    • Anyway… It’s a shame that the video that depicted Leticia’s death was removed from YT.

    • Ms. Phelps holds a BFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University, awarded in 1972. At a time when women were underrepresented in directing programs, she was one of the few women in her graduating class. To suggest that she possessed no further talents than completely changing the style of music used on soaps seems like a vast underestimate when one reads her online biography through an objective lens. I guess that I should be more clever than to constantly blame misogyny for these misguided interpretations of her management style.  But, I'll never comprehend why fans unquestionably align their opinions even years after fact. Post-modernism, and the ability to reinterpret context through the study of history, seems to elude this conversation.

    • This is 100% correct.  It was even on the nightly news where the US Government would not let the cast and crew travel to Egypt because it was deemed not safe.  The Achille Lauro hijacking took place on October 7, 1985, when the Italian ocean liner MS Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel. The location shoot was probably scheduled to be filmed in mid-October to air throughout November with a two week tape to air date.  Remember on the show they did some in studio scenes doubling for Egypt before shifting the action to Arizona.  It was an awkward end to a truly bizarre storyline.
