Best/Worst Network Promo Campaigns

The "Love in the Afternoon" promo discussion in the DAYS thread got me thinking about my favorite and least favorite soap ads through the years.

FAVORITES

Note:  I love those cheeky Santa Barbara promos about actors who left their prior shows but I couldn't find an example of one on YT

1.  Peggy's White Wedding (Eastenders) I watched the beginnings of Eastenders when it played on my local PBS station but dropped off until years later when I saw this promo

2.  Classic ABC promos (voiced by someone I thought was Ernie Anderson) still send chills down my spine

3.  Of course, the "love in the afternoon" theme song was great, but I adore this alternate score of "Hooray for Love"

Least Favorites

What the heck is the "Heat of the Day"?  And why would it be desirable?

Take your pick, is it the song? the dancing? the hair?  Or the sequenced dresses with white pantyhose?

Reply with your best and worst, but please no mentions of "Real Greenlee's."

Ha! That discussion prompted me to look up a bunch of old promos this morning.

This is my favorite ABC daytime promo of all time featuring one of my favorite couples.

They DON'T EVEN TOUCH and it's sexier than well most everything else in daytime today. This whole campaign was great.

I didn't care about the show even a little bit but I loved when ABC had the budget to get a Madonna (?!) song for their bottom of the ratings soap opera.

And the Tainted Love promos were the first time I'd ever heard the song and I instantly loved it.

Does anyone remember which promo used this song?

I hope none of the DAYS actors in that "It Will Excite You" promo suffered whiplash.

Here's a favorite of mine that really sells the hell out of CBSD's 1985 lineup, with a catchy pop song ("Some Like It Hot" by Power Station), combined with choice scene picks for each soap (Y&R, ATWT, CAPITOL and GL), for a tight, relentless package.

Apparently, bad promos are in NBC Daytime's DNA.  Here are two others that show the department's total lack of imagination or excitement for their soaps:

I get the "Heat of the Day."  What I DON'T get are the generic, mostly faceless images that don't reference any shows or actors. It's like watching a precursor to the OLTL opening from the Linda Gottlieb era.

No, it's definitely not that because I only heard the song in the early 2000s and I could swear it was part of a daytime campaign.

The only time NBC had decent promos was the campaign for Passions (which was not representative of the show AT ALL). These were sexy, glossy, high quality, the exact opposite of everything Passions represented.

How long did the Get It On campaign last for CBS? And the Everything is Everything campaign?  They're VERY similar.

Oh wow was this a real promo? It's horrible and cheap looking.

I loved OLTL's "What in the name of Love?" promos in the mid-'90s.

This warmed my heart. I just wish it'd had a better outcome.

From my own YouTube channel, a trader sent me this years ago on a great tape she edited for me.

    • Out of curiosity, I just took a peek at the scene. I don't think that's a window. Rather, it's the entrance to the mausoleum.
    • You can't have the entire cast on in one episode.  LOL They were not needed for this.  We didn't need to see what their reactions would be.
    • Yup, I went to my grandparents' anniversary party back in the day.

    • They said the teens had gone out for the night. With who? They have no friends to speak of. They should've been there at the party. The excuse was lame.
    • This is how I remember it, too. I remember Evie confronting Rita about her involvement with Tim when she knew she was in love with him. Bawling her eyes out, talking about how she dreamed of marrying and having children with him. It's amazing she and Rita stayed close after that. I don't recall who he left town with. Yes, Holly definitely evolved/grew up after she and Ed split. I remember Lynn Deering as Holly. She was very different from Maureen Garrett. I remember Garrett's first episode. She is a rare example of a recast who caught on with the audience fairly quickly. They were pretty much over--Evie saw them hug goodbye when Hope was about to leave town. She misinterpreted the kiss, fell down and hit her head. That's how she became blind. Robin Mattson was playing Hope at the time. If they didn't want Elvera back in the mid-80s, it could have been interesting if they had brought Robin back to play a Hope with more backbone.
    • "Make them laugh.  Make them cry.  Make them wait."  They nailed the wait part.
    • I really CAN'T with the two dolls comment. It's so cynical. So disgusting. A billionaire telling normal working people this is just... you can't make this sh-t up. That's comics villain level of vile.
    • This episode was on fire and definitely the best the show's done so far.  And of course the two big reasons were TMG and Ambyr Michelle who were phenomenal.  This could be both their Emmy reels.  Sad thing is they will probably be in the Supporting category so only one of them will win.   Claybon was pretty good when Martin confronted his dad. I'm glad to see he's improving.  I also liked that scene with Andre with Eva, showing some compassion with his cousin.  Now that the secret is out, Eva and Leslie can start to interact with more of the cast, like at the end of today's episode with Leslie showing up at the Dupree's.  And hopefully that will help the show be not as boring - this storyline was the only one that was truly interesting, and now it gets to branch out.  Minor nitpicks: bad editing during the Eva/Leslie/Ted scene by themselves, and when Bill was rubbing Hayley's feet.  They gotta clean this up.
