Who cares about the fans Contessa? These people lived their lives and they could and not should care less about the people reading the soap magazines. I don't consider being not "being out to the fans" being in the closet.
Now getting married, having kids, lying to the wife and all, is another thing.

Sharing your personal life with random strangers who want to marry you is not being in the closet. If everybody in your life knows, who cares about the people who watch a soap opera (which was not the actor's real life btw)?

It is like visiting an aunt you don't really care about and she keeps asking you about your personal life. We are the annoying aunt. That's the reason I believe we are unfair to these people.

Are you familiar with the movie SOAPDISH? In it periodically the HW takes the star to a mall in a nearby town & lets on about who she is so she gets that adoration. To me we are the people at the mall. And, again YMMV.

A whole 'nother subpoint could be made about the good that could accrue from having high profile people come out of the closet & while I believe that to be true I don't really think it is germane to this topic.

I just think that judging people from the past by today's standards and rules is one of our society's biggest problems. They did just fine.

PS: Not all viewers are people at the mall. I know that I wouldn't run to a soap actor for any reason. And the HW knows who is gay and who is not. So what closet lol. Who cares about the mall closet. And trust me, gay kids got a lot of strength from the "closeted" people. They could smell them from far and adore them.

That's ok, we have different opinions Contessa. Take care

I am not judging anyone! Every one has to choose their own path. The anecdote I shared about James Mitchell, in fact, someone who was in a closet to most of his fans, is in itself a compliment to him & to the leadership at AMC at the time.

Not all anybody is always anything. People are different. Me, I become absurdly star struck & shy.

Who cares what the HW knows or does not know. It really does not matter.

I already said what closet.

Are you nuts? I WAS one of those gay kids, in a small town, when there was NO REPRESENTATION. Absolutely no one in society looked or seemed or acted like me. There was no smelling nobody from afar to adore!!!! When I was a depressed teen lesbian girl I would have given my first born child to have known that Connie Ford was gay.

It is not a problem that we've had different experiences. It is a problem if someone diminishes someone else's.

And, I say again YMMV. And, clearly this is an instance where you & I do have different mileage & it is okay that we do.

I know many many people for whom that was not true. Whether they were naive or Pollyannas or simply unaware of gay folk in any realistic sense of the word, people who would fight you that no, Tony Geary was not gay, that he was in love with thus & so woman. Etc. Just one example.

I apologize. Very strong emotions were provoked by what you said. To me what you said was not okay. But, it is true that I do not hold with name-calling, so I am sorry.

Okay, I see what you mean. I can agree with clueless in that sense. There was a time when I was that naive, that sheltered, and it wasn't because I was stupid or not thoughtful, it was entirely because my frame of references offered absolutely no examples of anything but plain jane straight people. It was hideously uncomfortable knowing I was different, so different, and always had been, but having NO CLUE what that meant.

Another thread derailed by you know who. It’s always gotta be about ME. SMH.

James Mitchell was always out. Even in his responses to fan letters, he talked about his male partner. Susan Flannery never gave a (blank) about what people knew or talked about her. The list goes on and on. Too many to list and yes, it wasn’t hard to figure out even way back then.

Perhaps in 2024 we need new idioms rather than closeted?

There has to be a difference between a public official like David Dreier or Jim McGreevy who were outed because they were elected based on a political platform which was antithetical to their private lives. And actors who lived openly, but whose love life was obscured by PR.

I feel as if I've made this point throughout this thread, but James Mitchell is a perfect example.  He lived openly as a gay man from his time as a dancer on Broadway in the 1960s.  It may not have been obvious to viewers of AMC, because in a world where every song, painting, and poem is about heterosexual love, it is not top of mind.

Those “in the know” may have lamented that one of the few roles for LGBTQ actors in soaps were the twisted villains who were a barrier to young love (which, in hindsight, was an ironic projection on the part of writers and producers).  But, I think it is unfair to judge actors of that time who were not given the opportunity to talk about their lives.  Or, the fans who assumed the norm because few other examples were available.  And to continue to treat being gay as a gossipy datalounge-issue secret doesn't feel as if it fits the vibe of modern culture.

    • Another I wonder about if they thought Joe Gallison would have more of an impact after his AW success. Was Agnes still involved with OLTL then?
    • I thought I was the only one. They do nothing for me. I enjoy Dani which seems to be an unpopular opinion here, but Andre to me is as unnecessary as Ashley and Derek. Not only should Vanessa, Nicole's bestie, and her husband have been there but where are Naomi and her man?
    • I think Vanessa not being there was a matter of choices in who to have there without overloading the interactions. Nicole is going to have to interact with her kids, parents, sister and of course have it out with Ted. Any interaction with Vanessa will have to be after the whole mess goes down.
    • Right--I did think of that, as it was around the same few years.  Accents I guess...
    • It is an insult. To the viewer's intelligence. Everything in this show in the past 4 years has been horribly conceived, produced like a cheap tik-tok video, without any build up or psychological reasoning, and then re-written to level 0 in couple of weeks (where everything is ABSOLUTELY the same as it was before it happened). People get gravely sick and then recover in 5 episodes, because of miracle cures. People get killed and un-killed in the most cartoonish Scooby-Doo scenarios, people get pardoned after killing 2 innocent victims, people become and unbecome CEOs with the snap of a finger. But when you look around in a month or two or three... it's like absolutely nothing has happened. Nobody has grown... or evolved... or changed. We still have Steffy talking to Ridge how Hope and her mother are not worthy. We still have Brooke crying about something that Ridge said. We still have Hope at the same emotional limbo she's been put in ever since Brad decided she needs a re-vamp and made her a ho. EVERYTHING IS THE SAME. Only the Taylors change every few seasons and become increasingly younger. The problem I have with Liam's storyline is the problem I have with every storyline - why should I care if he is dying or sick with cancer when I haven't seen him in 2 years?!! Why go from 0 to a 100 like that. The same way with Sheila... who was backburned for months... before getting fake-killed for ratings. Why would we care about that... when Sheila was a non-entity before that.  Or why should I care for Brooke... when she's been ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of a character for years... to now all of a sudden re-birthed into a lingerie queen and CEO?   Back in the day, we... the viewers of this horrible show... cared and loved to see characters struggle from point A to point B. We wanted to see the build up, the makings of something. Not get a finished result that is undone after a week or two. When Brooke became CEO in 1993... we cheered because it mattered and because she gave HER ALL to get to that point. It was a revenge after years and years of abuse, being slapped around like a homeless dog by Stephanie. She plotted and calculated her every move. But she was also raw and hurt. She was both opportunist and a heroine. She had dept and dimensions. THAT WAS A CHARACTER. That was a human being.   My diagnosis is that at this point Bradley Bell doesn't care. Bold is living off of past history, fans being loyal, the show being 18 minutes of crap that people watch to laugh at. He sees the ratings are still okay and even improving and he DOES NOT GIVE A S-IT. He is even more motivated to continue with the current style of trash. It will only get worse from this day on.  He is way pass the period where he wanted to tell stories or impress the viewers with anything. (Not that he was particularly good about that anyways) I would not even be surprised if he is writing this drivel on complete auto-pilot at this point. Maybe he asks Chat GPT what to write each week. That's how it feels. IF IT'S THE OPPOSITE... and he is trying and that's the BEST HE CAN DO?!!! Then we are really f-cked.  Even Bradley Bell was NOT THAT HORRIBLE guys. But times change and people age... and that's all I'm going to say.
    • -- Really good episode today, with a lot more happening than I expected. -- SilkPress is great, but I don't see the need to criticize Dani/KM when supporting Leslie. -- That being said, I don't like Dani with Andre. I think they should end that as soon as possible. -- Very lame that Vanessa and Doug weren't there. If they want to impress on us that Vanessa is Nicole's best friend, they need to do better. -- Brandon Claybon continues to improve as Martin, and his relationship with Smitty finally feels real. -- Dr. Carlton is, as others have posted, fine as fck. We need more.
    • As much as I have hyped the looks on this show, those dresses did not impress today. Since the premeire, there's only been one look that I can truly say IMO didn't work (and it honestly wasn't even that bad). It was an outfit Dani wore. These flowly wide leg trousers and it was paired with a loose top with a cowl neck. However, I didn't LOVE a single dress on any of the ladies today. Kat's was great only because it suits the character and her personality - so an A for that. It's a good dress. Dana's was also really nice. Everyone else either just was meh, had something unflattering about the fit, or didn't really fit the vibe.  Also, this isn't BTG's fault. It's just the state of soap operas today, but that event felt empty. Tables of 3

I mean it was nice that they had some extras on there, but it definitely didn't feel like an event when the family was pretty much ever table there.  That was a nice end to the episode and I wonder how this is going to unfold.
    • I was looking at the AWHP synopses from the period where Quinn had a stalker in 1984 and it refers to pranks and phone calls. Does anybody remember what the pranks were? Or were they just disturbing phone calls?
    • Same. Things were really coming together the last moment of the show. I wish we had more time with it.
