NOV 1985

A DAILY soap opera depicting the lifestyles of the black community is under development by O.J. Simpson's Orenthal Productions and Ralph Edwards Productions in association with Columbia Pictures TV. The serial, called Heart and Soul, is being developed for syndication. It will revolve around the music industry and will feature original music produced in stereo. Stephen Karpf, Elinor Karpf and Jason Karpf, whose previous credits include the daytime soaps General Hospital and Capitol, will serve as head writers and producers on the drama.

Interesting! Time and Tide sounds so old fashioned but I wonder if it was a proposed fourth Ted Corday soap? I recall Corday's inspiration for titles Days and Morning Star came from Book of Psalms makes sense someone would pick a title out of an classic proverb.

I wonder why NBC kept trying out soaps in mid-morning timeslots as opposed to something later in the afternoon in the 60's.

Variety October 1953

CBS announces 4 new soap operas to expand their lineup

Woman with a Past written by Mona Kent

Those Manning Girls written by Lawrence Klee

The Road Ahead written by Irna Phillips with Alex March producing.

The Family Upstairs from Charles Vanda (originating in Philadelphia)

Variety states that 'Woman' and 'Manning Girls' would get to air first.

Woman With a Past did get to air but Secret Storm was it's companion soap.

So none of the other 3 made it to air.

Return to Collinwood has a few details about some ill-fated attempts at reviving Dark Shadows in serial form:

Another opportunity arose in 1997 when 20th Century Fox's television production arm - called Twentieth Television at the time - and The Fremantle Corporation proposed producing with Curtis either a new daytime version or a weekly primetime version. A daily version in the original soap opera format was preferable since the Fox Network was considering possibly expanding their affiliate programming into the daytime market - a scenario that did not transpire. For the next four years, Fremantle continued to explore possibilities to resurrect Dark Shadows as a syndicated primetime weekly hour-long series but the deal was contingent on filming in Canada for budgetary reasons, a stipulation that Curtis could not accept as he felt the program would need to be produced under his watchful eye in Los Angeles, close to home.

---

In 2001, Curtis teamed with Aaron Spelling's company, Spelling Television, in an attempt to bring Dark Shadows to the Fox Network as a primetime weekly serial. Writer Eric Bernt was hired to pen the story with new twists, including introducing the character of Angelique in the premiere episode. Curtis' creative input remained a vital element but in early 2002, after delivery of Bernt's script, Fox decided not to pick up the project.

Also in 2001, Fremantle made one last attempt to get in the Dark Shadows business with a plan to produce a new daytime version in Spanish using the original daytime series' scripts. But the idea once more failed to materialize.

    • On GL we only saw young GA's Philip in very short shorts but on AMC we saw GA's Alec McIntyre in a speedo.  But, on GL, an older GA/Philip is having sex with Olivia in a hotel room where Bruce Barry was directing & he & she both end up down to nothing but black underwear & at one point his bicep is covering her entire upper body so it appears that she is naked. I think they ended up on the floor between the bed & the wall. That was when I realized that Grant's body was better than Steve Burton's. (Olivia was cheating. Her husband Alan was in the hospital.) It is notable that I can speak with any insight AT ALL about these bodies since that is not the team I play for! LOL
    • I mentioned that last week and I am glad Tate and Sophia just realized that today lol.  I think the show is just tying up some of Ron's loose ends.   You would think Brady, Holly or even Marlena would have perhaps pointed out the age thing to Tate at some point. I am not sure I like this shift in Sophia's characterization though.  MK played Sophia as someone who always defied her mom's rules-she just didn't get caught.  She was openly trying to steal Tate from Holly with no shame, showing up at the Horton cabin in bikinis to seduce him, and blackmailing Holly to work all her shifts at the Bistro.  Once the recast started the show has acted like Sophia's lived in her room, sheltered her entire life lol.
    • I thought Dante was going to put hands on Gio
    • If Jordan never appeared again, I would absolutely not notice or miss her.  So, while Brook Kerr has her flaws, she at least appears to have a pulse and a personality as Portia.
    • That's because India, or the India MKA ended up playing, was created due to the fact that both she and Kristi Farrell were liked by TPTB, but the part they both read for didn't exactly fit either one of them so the show created two brand new characters for both actresses to play (India and Roxie) and opted not to cast the character they were intending to cast (A cousin of Beth's). I think that's why the show seemed to struggle at first with how to write both India and Roxie in their first months on the show because the characters weren't ever intended to exist.  And yes.. Grant A had a great body... but I didn't find him hot when he was playing Phillip.. only when he was playing Alec on AMC which baffles me since it was the same actor in both parts LOL
    • I shared this on Twitter and good grief the comments. Steffy fans can be such vile real-life human beings over a fictional character lol.
    • I remember Michael Logan interviewed L.A. actors/production staff about the movie. Susan Seaforth Hayes said she was dying to know Susan Lucci's reaction.
    • Thanks @Franko  @slick jones You may be interested in the Elisabeth Shue mention. I have to laugh that they apparently didn't even know Teri Hatcher was on Capitol. I have scans somewhere of SPW talking with soap actors about Soapdish. Some, like Mary Stuart, were not happy. I never had a lot of interest in the movie myself.
    • I never had much of a problem with Brandon Claybon's performance as Martin. He has gotten much better though. While I enjoy his confrontational scenes, I must say his lighter, and carefree scenes from Thursday's episode are the ones that stood out most in the last 3 days (to me).   I agree with all of this!
