Days Of Our Lives Renewed

I would say "fought," mostly because I saw P&G let their soaps slowly choke to death and I saw Valentini drown OLTL in stunt casting and cheap camp and go along with a purge of queer and minority characters in favor of generic ab rollers and stories that tell viewers how wild and hot it is for women to be raped. It's not what DAYS should be, but it's more than the other soaps got.

The show is going to go at some point, but it's been a decade of this, and part of the reason it's stayed is because those in charge have done enough to get by. I wish that translated to more quality onscreen - a hell of a lot more quality - but I do think they are trying. And given that NBC is in a healthier position than it was for many of the years DAYS narrowly got a renewal, I guess the efforts were enough.

In a way it's just really like what went on with GL's last decade, in that I think many involved care, and the core identity of the show is still in place, but that isn't going to bring back what it once was.

I hope that Irna Philips is somewhere working some sort of magic that might mean this escapes GL's fate...but either way, one more year is something I didn't think they'd get.

Good news on several levels.

Cast and crew keep their jobs for at least another year.

Hopefully Ron will do something that creates some interest and gets the numbers moving up.

One thing that always puzzles me is that despite budgets being slashed the cast is quite large and not always well utilized. Surely up to 10 characters could be dropped to save money.

But Days is always adding people eg A Martinez,Vincent I etc that don't come cheap and really arent needed story wise.

Well, in that vein, yes, he has fought for his show, but I don't like to give him much credit LOL. He's often checked out and clueless, I mean, you've read his interviews. He'll check in, push his favorites (or his wife's) and then hit the golf course. But I think without him DAYS probably would have been dead a long time ago. It's clear the cast and crew fight for their show. As does the fanbase.

It burns me as well how P&G treated their soaps. I really don't understand why they couldn't sell them if they didn't want to do anything. Sucks.

They almost have more cast on recurring than contract. Well, not literally but it seems like it, LOL. And I'd rather watch most of them than about half of who are on contract.

I'm sure they are. I'd hope so. They have to know the reality.

I'm happy for the cast and crew. I really am, but I just can't find myself getting as excited as I used to get about these renewals.

I suspect we would have had a few withdrawals next year if Israel had won. I don't think many people would relish going to Jerusalem as things stand now. Not to mention it would have been a prime target for terrorist attacks.
    • And they've given us plenty. Sets, outdoor scenes, music licensing, etc. And that was the point of me using DAYS... so. It's obvious the casino set is not intended for long-term use, hence why it's likely it wasn't as evolved as the other community sets, etc.

    • I just had thought of how to save the Perkins family. (Inspired by Rituals) -- What if Marisa Perkins was Augusta Lockridge's sister? Fictionally, they could've both been local girls, one married rich and one married poor. Originally, I was going to suggest that Marisa be Sophia's sister, but then I realized Joe and Kelly would've been first cousins.  Of course, it would've truly inspired Sophia was if Rosa Andrade sister, with Rosa and Santana moving in to help CC raise the kids once Sophia disappeared.  While this could've avoided both gross CC and Santana affairs, the times were not right for a story about intersectional inequity.
    • https://www.instagram.com/p/DJxW5DLJLId/ Another World is my forever favorite soap opera. But it's finale is almost universally hated by its fans. What this is, is an edit where I've deleted everything I didn't like!!!
    • The Perkins family had potential to be a nice alternative to the more dysfunctional Capwells and wackier Lockridges... but I think a few factors did in the family. 1) Recasting of Joe Perkins 2) Bad casting of the Perkins Patriarch, and the one note writing for that character. 3) Lack of antagonistic interaction between the Capwells/Lockridges and Perkins.  (There was no awkwardness between Jade/Ted.. or CC disapproving of his son being friends with that Perkins girl, etc). 4) Wasting of Jade thus wasting the potential of the actress (which was realized on Days of Our Lives).  She had more potential than Laken oddly enough. The only member of the Perkins family that had appeal and a somewhat thought out story arc was Amy.
    • @GymnastGuyThanks for posting the three new Capitol 1985 episodes today. The two labeled March 12, and 13 are misidentified. The March 12 labeled one actually aired November 12 1985 which I figured out because Kenny Rogers' movie Wild Horses aired November 12th and it was announced over the "March 12" Cap credits. In addition, Craig Carlson is listed in the April credits but not the March. Craig left Capitol sometime after July 1985 before he rejoined OLTL in the credits by October 15, 1985; he was replaced on Cap by Radcliffe and Hamner. In these posted episodes Radcliffe/Hamner names appear in the March 85 episodes but not in the April.
