I was posting this on another board and thought people here find might it an interesting read too. (Just realized I posted in the wrong thread...didn't mean to post in Spoiler Section...sorry!)

A LOOK BACK AT CLEARANCE RATES...

Someone mentioned "clearance rates" tonight (the percentage of clearance each daytime network show has per all of their affiliates), so I remembered I had a few charts that listed them from a long time ago. Here's a look back at each show's clearance rate for several years. I had never studied these stats before, so they are quite interesting! B&B slowly rises from 93 percent coverage in 1989 to 96 coverage in 1993, while Another World drops from 99 to 96 and Santa Barbara drops from 99 to 94. Also, this time frame is when NBC started to slowly give back its network time to local affiliates. They gave the 10-11AM time slot back to local affiliates between 1990 and 1992, and the 11-1130AM time slot in the fall of 1992.

You would think most of the soaps would be 100. Maybe the column they used on the paper could only fit two #s in that column. If not, then I guess there was one rogue affiliate for each of ABC, CBS, NBC which did not carry the shows back then. I only have some random reports from that time frame in late 80s/early 90s. Would be fun to see how it continued on in the past 20+ years.

I'd say because you had that one stations like KDKA not airing ATWT for several years in favor of a local talk show, KXTV and later KOVR not airing GL, WUSA not having TPIR,  KVII not airing AMC, WDTN not airing General Hospital etc. Sure it may be just one or two stations but if the station is in a bigger market, it wasn't going to be considered 100%.

The Bells had campaigned for B&B to get full clearance and Lee Phillip Bell even visited herself several stations not airing B&B. I believe it was by 1995 they finally succeeded.

The local affiliates use to wield a ton of power in programming their own schedules to fit their own needs-ie soaps airing out of order or a day behind, shows being preempted for local shows and what not. Those practices and a lot of stations airing local programming pretty much died out the Telecom Act of '96 and by the late 90s I believe the networks were requiring full carriage of network programming and made examples of dropping stations that pre-empted network programs in favor of local programs.

    • I like the slow burn romance building between Tomas and Kat, and I also liked the homework scene with Tyrrell and his lady friend (Phil & Tara on AMC had a study date talking math as they made eyes at one another). What I most liked about this episode was that we had longer scenes today between Anita/Tracy, Chelsea/Kat, and Tomas/Kat mixed with shorter scenes.   I wonder if the breakdown writer, or script writer, determines the length of each scene.  I also have a feeling Chelsea's going to run to Dani after learning about Hayley's possible bun in the oven... and that horrid heffer (Dani) will stick her nose where it doesn't belong. That said, I liked the spark of spunk from Hayley at the end.  If she were smart, she'd pay the country club crowd no attention and focus on making friends with others outside the gate.
    • After his excellent portrayal of JFK - I remember watching it as a kid and being wicked impressed - Devane must have been in demand for big ticket projects. Sadly, he didn't get very good guidance in choosing the right parts, an often overlooked aspect of the entertainment business....to Knot's Landing's benefit, of course...
    • I'm not ready at all. But at least I can take some time at least. I know I'm going to be a crying mess.
    • I hope Rena Sofer, as Lois, remains at GH for a long time to come
    • Well, the writing wasn't helping him so it's good to hear.   VERY good to hear.
    • I'll give it a shot. If this is bad it's on you, @carolineg!
    • Absolutely ridiculous that three soaps are going to make me watch today's episodes.
    • *eyeroll* on Hayley.   While I feel like he has more chemistry with Eva, the actor playing Tomas is slooooowly improving.   Le sigh Smitty. That said...we know I'm loving the near-misses around Martin's secret. And happy it is getting attention again the last week of May Sweeps.
    • I love how farmboy  Hart became a Guido with a thick New York accent. You could tell they never knew or cared what to do with Hart post MH, he was just a hunk of steroids to take off their shirt and have girls fight over him, but I never understood what Bridget, Dinah or Cassie saw in him..(besides the proverbial roll in the hay, now there is a 20 on the dresser get out.) The move from Hilliard to Grillo was really quick and I would like to know the story...was Moniz not liking him? For more on our good old George Pilgrim, read "Unscripted" where he makes a cameo appearance as Sumner Redstone's much younger mistresses side piece. When you read about him you could imagine that Pilgrim was writing his own dialogue as obnoxious J.  There is NO way he was a product of Nola and Quint.
    • What an hour of soap opera television. -- It doesn't get much better than this. Every actor delivered in every storyline. There's so much blame to be placed on so many characters for their mistakes, yet it's impossible not to sympathize with them. -- When Tracy looked at Gio after hearing the news about Dante and Brook Lynn, iT was just another example of the excellence of Jane Eliott. All it took was one look to make an already good Giovanni Mazza even better. -- My heart broke for Gio, but you have to feel heartbreak for Brook Lynn and Dante, too, unless you have ice in your veins. -- Cody's understanding and sympathy for everyone was real and sincere. Lulu was into her "Well, maybe in the long run this will all be better," but Cody understood that part of Lulu's reaction was a defense. She made mistakes, but she never wanted to hurt anyone. -- Neither did Lois, who's going to get it from all sides and take the brunt of the blame. I don't think she'll get any relief from Ned. Rena Sofer has been great at expressing her pain. -- Rory Gibson is off to a good start as Michael, and is expressing more emotion than he did in his entire run at Y&R. -- I didn't mind the Trina and Kai "first time" scenes. Those scenes were well-acted and nicely directed, and some goodness was needed in a show with so much heaviness. GH is on a really good run, and every day has been must-see TV.
