You're right. That's one of the reasons why I wish they'd try 15 minute soaps again. As it is, I think there could still be an audience if soaps were willing or able to find their core again, but that doesn't seem likely.

15-minute soaps would be great. They also should be taped live, so the actors don't get lazy and phone it in.

I agree!

A shame that type of show seems like such a rarity now - even the streaming services seem prone to just more melodrama or generic action and adventure.

In my heart, I would like to believe that the dearth of character-driven series like Family on TV today was what ignited the emotional response to Heated Rivalry. Fans of intimate, nuanced character dramas are not necessarily satisfied with a steady diet of generic action/adventure/sci-fi/supernatural/comic-book material. I crave to see literate, mature series more often .

Sadly, the last time I checked, many of the episode were on YT, but not all. And a lot of the ones there were of poor quality and badly cut up.

I'm going to check again now, to see if any better copies have been uploaded.

GOOD NEWS: A kind soul has, indeed, been uploading this show, and in good, uncut quality too.

Here's a playlist list for seasons 1 and 2:

Cheryl Ladd said she was nearly cast as Nancy when they recast the part. I wonder how she would have been.

I think she would've been fine as Nancy. She isn't the WORST actress in the world, although she probably would've looked like a lightweight next to the rest of the cast. But I do think her Nancy would've been a more playful and comedic than Meredith Baxter Birney's.

I do wonder if she could have played up all the angst.

I liked what I saw of the first Nancy.

Elayne Heilveil (Nancy # 1) put me in the mind of Betty Aberlin from Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Brianne Leary from CHiPS also looked similar to them.

I thought Heilveil was fine in the role. She really wasn't given much to do after the pilot. Her role was pretty much reduced for the rest of season 1.

I can't remember if this has been posted before or not. Heilveil tells why she left the series which is kind of weird. She wanted out of her contract because she didn't want to commit to a long term series but I gather they were going to replace her anyway and she was confronted by that when her friend Brooke Adams told her she had read for her part. She also talks about knowing her replacement Jane Actman and that she was a lovely person. The other cast said It's a shame Actman didn't work out. They said they liked Meredith, but didn't get really close with her off set. The cast and crew did sense that David Birney wasn't nice and they were kind of protective of her. They also said the only time they really felt uncomfortable on set was when he made a guest appearance. Heilveil said she helped come up with the opening scene in the pilot where Nancy has a meltdown in the car.

Thanks.

Brooke Adams would have been great.

A shame that Actman retired just a few years after losing the role.
