HBO: Succession

HBO is coming for that soap opera market! And long overdue.

Succession follows the saga of a fictional, American global-media family that is not only rich and powerful but also powerfully dysfunctional. The drama will explore family loyalty, international business and the perils of power in the 21st century.

Some of the people involved backstage seem promising. I will be following this one closely!

I just caught up with the pilot and really enjoyed it. Straight up, good, old-fashioned soapy drama. Wonderful acting. I particularly enjoyed that long family lunch scene/confrontation and Kendall's freakout in the bathroom, after which he cleaned up LOL

Glad to hear it's already been renewed. I see a lot of potential.

It's taken forever, but I'm continuing with Season 1. The scene of Roman masturbating by his office window overlooking New York was such a great comment on how power is an aphrodisiac to him. And him then wiping the semen off

Kendall was fantastic in his efforts of formulating a response to Logan's stroke, thinking he's made it, only for Logan to tell him he's a fυcking idiot.

Poor Greg. Poor thing.

I love this show so much!  Friends recommended it to me last fall, but only got around to watching this month.  I only have the season 2 finale left and I'll be caught up.  SO good.  Every single character is deliciously evil and fun to 'love to hate'.  I wish we had more than 10 episodes per season - if I were watching this live - I'm sure I would be frustrated with how long it takes for certain plot points to resurface and have closure (don't want to give away examples in case they're spoilers).  I wonder if they were able to wrap season 3 before COVID, or will we have to wait a year before we get new content.

    • Lol.  I love that this board still allows misinformation from a bad source.
    • Thanks @kalbir what a time to have enjoyed the peak of the primetime soaps. Haha you’re good. The only complaint I have with Lorraine’s death as I mentioned recently in the FC thread was it was overkill, and all we got Apollonia. If a pregnant woman had to be killed off, I would’ve chosen just killing off Robin instead in some freak accident or in the explosion at Richard’s to save us from us that disaster lol.    Did Hotel have a cliffhanger that year? I imagine if Hotel had been soapier we would’ve had cliffhangers like the hotel catching on fire or bombed by an ex-lover of Christine. Peter pisses everyone off and is shot in his office. Or a major Golden age star like a Olivia de Havilland shows and tells how she originally owned the Hotel and how Victoria Cabot & Laura Trent stole it from her but now she owns it etc.
    • The whole AMC 2.0 pulled it together in mere weeks to get a show up and running, with scripts and a cast.

Ginger Smith seemed really passionate about being in the executive producer position, and I think she really did a fantastic job in six weeks. It was just well done.
    • I totally didn’t pick up on that. Just perfect! I don’t get the Maurice Johnson hate around here at all. He didn’t take me out of the scenes at all. I understood everything he was portraying. It was great. I do wonder if there will be a personality shift with the new actor, whom I’m still not excited about. Exactly. Right? I’m in the exact same boat as you. Agree with most of this except I never found anything off with Ted, didn’t suspect a thing. I just watched yesterday’s episode and it was one of the best soap episodes I’ve seen in a very long time. I was enthralled the entire time. Just fantastic.
    • Yep! Very curious to see where this goes.
    • I was confused too, but I think it was always a "tribute thread" (this one and OLTL's were created when their cancellations were announced). They just changed the show abbreviations to their titles spelled out, I guess to make the board just a little bit more uniform. I was lost, too lol
    • Well... I am. I think she's losing her initial menacing presence. Slowly but surely. I need the crazy dialed back. But as I said... this is very miniscule negative reaction. I am loving the show right now. We'll see how they'll continue after the fireworks.
