I don't know a whole lot about DM's work but I've heard he's good. Can ya'll help me figure out his style? How does he compare to Agnes/Phillips/Bell/Labine and so on? What clips are on YT that I can search for that scream "Douglas Marland" on them? I'm very curious about his ATWT work.

I'm curious as to why this thread hasn't gotten any responses? He was brilliant, had a few clunkers but so did every other great HW! Go to the cancelled soap section and look at ATWT and GL's pages, they have plenty of clips up (not sure about the classic GH page)! His writing, IMO, was a mixture of Bill Bell, Harding Lemay and Claire Labine swirled together and it equaled Douglas Marland!!!

I just saw your post today, and while I can't provide a clip for you, because as far as I know, they do not exist anymore due to that now reviled practice of "wiping" of videotapes that were in place at the time, my favorite Douglas Marland story was the Laura Webber/David Hamilton murder on General Hospital. What made the story so interesting and fascinating for viewers is the visual transformation Genie Francis went through while playing this story out. She went from looking like a normal teenage girl, then, after becoming involved with David Hamilton, took on this almost Veronica Lake look with her hair and was wearing beautiful clothes to accentuate her new "maturity". Then, after Laura killed David Hamilton, which Laura had blocked out, she went back to her normal teenage girl look, because Laura only recalled that David had dumped her (all while being plagued with troubling flashbacks which psychologist Peter Taylor tried to help Laura deal with). Lesley, her mother, took the wrap for the murder and was even sent to prison for a time! This IS is the story that actually saved General Hospital from cancellation. The "Luke and Laura" craze came a bit later. What struck me was, the story was so carefully constructed, paying close attention to Laura's psychology. Also well done was the whole process of how the DA came to the conclusion that Lesley was the killer (even if the conclusion was the wrong one). I don't think any story before or since had me so mesmerized as a soap viewer. I'm not sure if this was what you were looking for, but I hope it helps you.

IIRC, didn't GH reference the story when Laura was arrested years later for murdering Damian Smith? I think Richard Culliton and Karen Harris were the HW's then, but it might've been Bob Guza and Harris instead.

    • Well...I'm glad Tomas and Kat put it out there on the table.   Ooooo awww at this Anita/Vernon scene.     Yeah, I loved Vernon's talk to Anita.   But yep...a nice day, but a slow day.
    • I like the slow burn romance building between Tomas and Kat, and I also liked the homework scene with Tyrrell and his lady friend (Phil & Tara on AMC had a study date talking math as they made eyes at one another). What I most liked about this episode was that we had longer scenes today between Anita/Tracy, Chelsea/Kat, and Tomas/Kat mixed with shorter scenes.   I wonder if the breakdown writer, or script writer, determines the length of each scene.  I also have a feeling Chelsea's going to run to Dani after learning about Hayley's possible bun in the oven... and that horrid heffer (Dani) will stick her nose where it doesn't belong. That said, I liked the spark of spunk from Hayley at the end.  If she were smart, she'd pay the country club crowd no attention and focus on making friends with others outside the gate.
    • After his excellent portrayal of JFK - I remember watching it as a kid and being wicked impressed - Devane must have been in demand for big ticket projects. Sadly, he didn't get very good guidance in choosing the right parts, an often overlooked aspect of the entertainment business....to Knot's Landing's benefit, of course...
    • I'm not ready at all. But at least I can take some time at least. I know I'm going to be a crying mess.
    • I hope Rena Sofer, as Lois, remains at GH for a long time to come
    • Well, the writing wasn't helping him so it's good to hear.   VERY good to hear.
    • I'll give it a shot. If this is bad it's on you, @carolineg!
    • Absolutely ridiculous that three soaps are going to make me watch today's episodes.
    • *eyeroll* on Hayley.   While I feel like he has more chemistry with Eva, the actor playing Tomas is slooooowly improving.   Le sigh Smitty. That said...we know I'm loving the near-misses around Martin's secret. And happy it is getting attention again the last week of May Sweeps.
    • I love how farmboy  Hart became a Guido with a thick New York accent. You could tell they never knew or cared what to do with Hart post MH, he was just a hunk of steroids to take off their shirt and have girls fight over him, but I never understood what Bridget, Dinah or Cassie saw in him..(besides the proverbial roll in the hay, now there is a 20 on the dresser get out.) The move from Hilliard to Grillo was really quick and I would like to know the story...was Moniz not liking him? For more on our good old George Pilgrim, read "Unscripted" where he makes a cameo appearance as Sumner Redstone's much younger mistresses side piece. When you read about him you could imagine that Pilgrim was writing his own dialogue as obnoxious J.  There is NO way he was a product of Nola and Quint.
