I honestly don't think I liked anything about that trailer, even without hearing Meryl Streep as Aslan. I understand that any adaptation is just that, an adaptation of an existing work. But when you adapt something as beloved as the books about Narnia I do expect a little more respect for the source material. I'm so tired of this incessant need filmmakers seem to have with making everything about themselves or change the original work to fit the "modern audience". There are so many choices made on this adaptation that just makes no sense. Meryl Streep as Aslan is the most egregious, but also the decision to move the story 50 years. "The Magician's Nephew" originally takes place around 1900, the late Victorian era. This new movie shifts the time to the 1950s. Since they are supposedly planning to film all the books this will seriously screw up the timeline. In "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the Pevensie siblings are relocated during the London blitz, some 40 years after the events of "The Magician's Nephew". If that timeline remains intact that story will now take place in the 1990s..... I wonder what possible reason Gerwig will come up with to explain why Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy stay in the country house with Professor Kirke then?
As for the visuals, some might find them impressive, but I grew up with Pauline Baynes' original illustrations and the difference is mind-boggling. Neither the wood between the worlds nor the dying city of Charn look anything like that in Gerwig's film. Charn especially looks more like some futuristic mish-mash from The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and Willy Wonka. It just feels completely wrong for Narnia.
