Suicide Squad

Half the cast is terrible...the other half is pretty good. I just can't with this Joker tho. its just weird and not in a cool//engaging type of way that Heath Ledger was.

It just seems like big disaster in the making. Meanwhile Jesse Eisenberg looks and sounds really bad as Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman.

Watch The Dirty Dozen instead. Same thing but much much better!

Just like Batman v. Superman, this movie is looking to be a big pile of crap. Many reviews support that opinion, but I'm posting the link to this one because, brought to my attention on PTV, the last couple sentences made me laugh.

My favourite part:

Suicide Squad debuts throughout the country Friday, August 5, with preview screenings Thursday, August 4. There is also a movie where Kevin Spacey plays a talking cat opening this weekend, and, sight unseen, that might be a better bet.

Symptomatic of the continuing problem created by WB with these movies.   Marvel took their time making movies with solo characters first, introducing everyone til eventually it made sense and people were interested when they started to meet up.  Warner Brothers had no patience and just threw a bunch of characters on the screen at once and said "We have a universe!  Aren't you excited?"   Except for the Joker most people don't know who these characters are, and from everything I have read the Joker is only in there to make sure there is one character the audience has heard of.  He has almost no function.

They needed to do Superman, then Batman, then Wonder Woman, then Superman v Batman, then another couple of solo movies, introducing the villains along the way, then Justice League and Suicide Squad.   Marvel spent years creating this interlocking world of movies.   Iron Man came in 2008.  Avengers I think was 2012?  It's 2016 and they keep on expanding.   Patience is a virtue.

Did anyone see the movie at all or are you not seeing it because of what the critics are saying

I saw it and before the critic reviews came out. The critics are not wrong. It's horrendous, it has numerable offensive moments, and it's poorly made, and it's poorly acted.  It's on the same level as Batman & Robin and The Green Lantern.

What were the offensive moments?

Oh there are just so, so, so many but we can start with:

1.

Batman sucker punching Harley, then stuffing her "unconscious" body in the boot of an automobile, and then proceeding to get on top of her and gives her "sexy" mouth to mouth resuscitation but omg, just playing, she's not really unconcsious- she just wanted Batman to get on top of her and kiss her for some vaguely sexual reason.

2.

Slipknot who we're introduced to and then he promptly proceeds to also sucker punch a woman- this time it's just a female soldier standing there who he claims "has a mouth on her". Alright.

3.

All the super fun ways in which they really go out of their way to romanticise The Joker and Harley's "super romantic" romance and that they're "relationship goals". All of this while he's roaming the streets looking like he crawled out of a gutter and she's prancing around is underwear and calling him "daddy"

Also, after all of that endless buildup, The Joker is in it for less than 10 minutes.

Like quartermainefan said, they also give you zero buildup to know anything about these characters. I grew up with two brothers who loved DC and my husband is also a huge fan so I've spent enough time watching and hearing about it to have, I think, a fair grasp on who most of the characters are. I only knew The Joker, Harley, Amanda Waller, Batman, and Captain Boomerang. I have a feeling it's going to be the same for the general audience.

I believe the whole offensiveness and it "sucking" is up to interpretation

Have you seen it? If so, please explain to me why none of the stuff I listed above isn't offensive.

Yikes. Thanks for the details.

The second one really surprises me. It reminds me again how we seem to be hurtling backwards in treatment of women in the media.

From what I've read, people seem to think the only good thing about the movie is Harley Quinn

Pretty much, Will Smith's performance is also a highlight, but I'd say that's about it. Harley is the only thing that makes the film tether able. They wound up making Harley and the Joker a love story.
