OMGosh, Mama Khan LOVES binge watching those that are available on YT, lol. They don't offer much in the way of character development - a deficiency I chalk up to laziness on the part of the filmmakers - but they are a fun, convenient way to get one's "soap fix." And you're right, it wouldn't take much to produce 15-minute soaps like that: just good casting, directing and writing.

They could tape them "Live" like they did back in the day. It would up the game for actors to know their lines and hit their marks. Pre-recorded shows let a lot of actors get lazy and they rely on cue cards and phone in a performance. It would also help weed out bad actors who don't respect the genre. A lot of viewers would tune in just to see if there were any flubs/mishaps.

Twenty years ago, I had my VCR set for AMC and ATWT on a daily basis while in high school and usually watched them nightly at around 6pm or right before bed. I usually watched the Friday episodes on Saturday morning. During the summer, I'd let my dial-up connection take the 2-3 hours it needed to take to stream one 6-minute scene of a classic soap on WoST (which is pure insanity to even think about because it really would take an entire week to watch one episode).

Today, I watch no current soaps. If I'm home and in the mood during the weekday, I'll put on CBS via Paramount+ to check in on their daytime lineup. Otherwise, my soap-watching exclusively consists of streaming classics on TV via YouTube.

Ha! I never did see his odd appearance in the mid-2000s as himself as a musical guest, where they made a lot of in-jokes about him having been on the show before? I still wonder about that. tbh Jesse has visibly aged enough that he could pick up the role again today lol.

Yes, I agree with all of that. Ridings really was hard to watch, especially because his JR was so angry through his entire run. I think of him, and all I can see are scrunched eyes and his lower lip jutted out to overcompensate for an almost non-existent upper lip.

Let me just have my moment and say that I wore an AMC shirt to the last show Jesse played near me, and he just about died when I referred to him as "Adam Chandler Jr" when I went to take a photo with him after.

I remember Ridings being terrible and miscast. He was better a few years later as Dorian's recurring henpecked aide in the final years of OLTL. Alberti was a nice body and not much else. They did the right thing dumping both. But I always thought it was a mistake not securing Jesse McCartney a while longer until they had to age J.R. up.
