Before they were couples

Reading up on character histories, I'm often surprised at how some characters were both on a show for an extended period of time before being paired as a major couple.

Case in point:

Victor/Nikki: She came on in 1978 while being involved with Greg, Andy, and Paul story-wise while Victor came on in early 1980 married to Julia while interacting with other characters. They didn't even interact much, if at all, heavily until fall 1981.

Victor/Ashley: Ashley came on in spring 1982, but didn't interact with Victor in a more personal way until fall 1984.

Are there any other couples that you can think of where both characters were on the show for an extended period of time at the same time before being paired with one another?

Sonny and Carly on GH...do they count since they are not together anymore, yet were a huge pairing? They didn't get together until around 99, right?. Carly came on in 96. She started out as a nurse at the hospital, then revenged boinked her stepfather. After she had already done it with Jason and AJ. Had a huge paternity story surrounding Michael. Shot Tony in court, then went to the loony bin. Let Jason raise Michael for a while causing Robin and him to split. (Cottage hell).

During that time. Sonny was still in a triangle with Brenda and Jax. Wasn't he with another woman (Angel, right?) before he got with Carly.

2-3 years is hardly something uncommon. Unless a character is brought on speficifically to be paired with someone, then that's how it tends to be.

You want an extended period of time? Think Maggie and Victor on Days. She joined in 1973 and he in 1985. They weren't paired till around 2010/2011ish

Also on Y&R, Lauren and Michael. She was introduced in 1983, he in 1991, but they didn't really interact in the same storyline until about 2003/2004.

On AMC Dimitri suffered through the Natalie-in-a-well and not-dead-wife story before being paired with Erica. Adam Chandler and Brooke English both spent years in Pine Valley with other people before becoming a couple, ditto Adam and Liza Colby. Palmer and Opal had also been in town for quite some time before they were paired up.
