I am glad that Ginger Smith has said more core characters are coming and from the looks of it seems to be sooner than later. Tribute to Pine Valley website polling on 1st week and posters there are mixed, some giving the show -2, -1, 0, and demanding characters come back ASAP or they are gone, shows some weaknesses with the show. Daytime Confidential ran a poll themselves and 2/3 liked OLTL and ONLY 1/3 in favor of AMC. The continued complaints on the cursing. Age demographics issues. PP knows the 18-49 demo is what they continue to see. NYT review talked about the Over 50 age demo too. I think that the Hubbard family needs Frankie and a grandchild in recurring roles. After all, Angie and Jesse are 5 years older now. Maybe time to make them the Dr. Joe and Ruth Martin successors of Pine Valley. Focus more on that part. Writers need to focus more on the teens 20 somethings for the age demo issues. Since Snoop is writing the music for OLTL, somthing has to change with AMC and pretty quickly. There is both pro and con with Marlene McPherson's writing abilities (DOOL). Some actors need more storyline air time (Brooke, Opal). Agnes Nixon reminds everyone that her book is called ALL My Children, and not specific characters. and I agree with her. I hope the show succeeds. and I think the writers will settle down characters. This is only the second week in and hope that viewers will watch the show, hang in there and at least give it awhile.

The NYT review was written by someone who never saw the shows before. So I dont buy that reviiew. It was so sterotypical it doesnt fly to me. As for those Fans demanding this & that, they need to grow the [!@#$%^&*] up. Be greatful the shows are back and realize AMC isnt produced just for their tastes. Also those saying I dont like hearing the word [!@#$%^&*] on AMC but Ill watch Rae, Murder, sex etc are hypocrites

Also dont pay attention to soap blog polls they can be rigged by fans up and down. They are not quanitive

Is that the same article that refered to AJ as Brook's son and had the nerve to pose the question "Who is Bianca?" Yeah, I stopped reading after that cause it was clearly written by someone who does not understand the concept of a soap opera, or the idea that maybe a show that had been on for 41 years before cancellation will have characters that don't require introduction.

I agree with everything you've said. Also, writing a review after watching only four half hour shows seems premature at best, especially from someone who's never watched a soap before. The writers for these two returning shows have been given an impossible task: bring in new viewers without alienating longtime fans. So far I think they've done an admirable job. As for critiquing the acting: we're all aware that soaps are training grounds for young actors. Viewers allow them a little leeway as they grow into the roles, and most do. What's important is that the heart and soul of Pine Valley is still there, in its characters' interactions and the history. That's priceless. There'll undoubtedly be some tweaking to the stories and acting as the shows move forward, but I think a new viewer would be drawn in by the very question the reviewer asked: "Who is Bianca?" And many more questions like it. Well, stay tuned and find out, much as one does in reading a novel. You don't instantly know all the characters, their histories/backstories, but if the novel is written well, you go on the journey with the author to find out. That's what's required of a soap viewer. Honestly, am I surprised by this review? No. But shame on the NYT for allowing someone who doesn't understand the soap genre to write the initial review for the return of two soap classics. Would they send someone who's never seen a Broadway play to review an opening night? Absolutely not. I'm just sorry for the actors, writers, directors and production people who've poured so much of themselves into this endeavor, and get this type of shabby treatment. But that's pretty much how it's always been for the soaps. Somehow, I was hoping for more this time around.

As I said elsewhere, surely someone on the staff at NYT has a history with AMC/OLTL as a viewer. It would have been nice if they had at least published a short companion review from that perspective.

And yeah, soap polls mean nothing. I believe that overall AMC has done slightly better on Hulu and iTunes than OLTL--and I'm not saying that to start an AMC/OLTL fight but just to point out if one poll has people preferring OLTL and another poll or sales has the opposite, it doesn't really mean anything at this point.

When I saw that AJ was all the way by the Hubbards, I wondered if the show was going to revisit the storyline where the Hubbards fostered AJ for a while.
