HOLIDAY MIRACLE: Prospect Park Back On Track To Revive AMC and OLTL

  • Member

WTF!!!!!

EXCLUSIVE: Here is a great holiday gift for soap fans: I’ve learned that Prospect Park has revived its plan to continue cancelled ABC daytime dramas All My Children and One Life To Live online. I hear the company behind USA hit Royal Pains has inked deals with SAG-AFTRA and DGA for the soaps’ production, eyed to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

Random thought but the posts PP have been putting on the AMC and OLTL Facebooks have been...strange? Like they're using a lot of old photos of actors that will not be a part of the shows anymore (is that even legal?) and calling us out for having a crush on an AMC cast member, most of which will not be part of the reboot? Like...what? huh.png

It's legal.

The Facebook posts are off the mark and weird, but at least they're finally doing something! On the subject of the GH 3, following Errol's report, I think they're going to pull out a shocker with one of the remaining two. Just out of pure spite I expect one of the two to be recast for sure and it'll probably be Starr. I still say the fact that they were considering a Todd recast shows they're off the mark. They need to focus on creating the best show possible, not having people bitch and moan through the premiere about how terrible the new Todd is. Starr and John will be easier to recast though, so that shouldn't be a huge issue if they go that route.

IMO a Starr recast could work well. It did for Jessica

The young lady upthread who was cast on AMC could have been a Starr.

At any rate, I hope they don't resort to recasting/role switching over at GH or any of that type of mess. What an awkward and unnecessary jumble that would be.

IMO the entire last year was nothing but damage to the OLTL finale and should ALL be undone. I wish they would have just left OLTL alone and brought the three on as new characters in the first place. GH fans hated the 3 "taking over" their show and I hate what Ron did to my show.

Id be perfectly fine if PP ignored what GH did and picked up a year later with Starr in hiding with Cole and Hope, Todd in jail for Victor's murder and John being a cop in Llanview

I would not. Soaps need to resist this kind of foolishness for convenience. SBH and TR are talented, creative people. They can repave the road RC took these characters down on GH, but they don't have to demolish it and pretend that it never existed.

The selfish fan in me hates how Tea's baby was sacrificed for such a stupid plot. Id open up with her being a single mother to her son, who's about to celebrate his first birthday

Writers like Lorraine Broderick were fired for driving the ratings much further into the toilet. Point?

McTavish and Guza gave AMC and GH some of its better ratings of the past 20 years. If not the best.

McTavish and Guza could get too gimmicky but neither was really the King or Queen of it, James Reilly was both the King and Queen of gimmick writing.

Exactly. I'll refrain from defending McTavish but she's hardly the worse thing to happen to AMC--and did provide some of its best moments. Her main problem is being a"yes woman" so needing to be reigned in, and usually crasing and burning after a few years. Guza--I can't comment on, although I enjoyed Loving when he was co-HW in the early 90s with Millee Taggert

Id Rather have Madison's ex hubby back that actor is HOT

The dead, john/rapist?

Can you point to specifics about LB "driving the ratings much further into he (sic) toilet"? Both she and McTavish had multiple tenures on AMC. Which are you referring to?

Also, when we talk successful ratings, we generally think of a head writer's ability to sustain high ratings over time, not just a few weeks in sweeps. McTavish and Guza did have stretches where they strengthened the ratings, but it never really sustained. Certainly not like a Bill Bell. Or Irna Phillips, who kept ATWTs rating consistently high for a number of years. (If you can show me the ratings data backing up your claim that Guza and McTavish brought their shows the best ratings for the past twenty years for a sustained period, I'll gladly concede the point (weekly fluctuations aside).

Jim Reilly was Jim Reilly. He had a certain style that worked, and didn't. He was extremely bright and creative, whatever you thought of his style. I also think he loved the soap genre, something I'm not sure Bob Guza ever did. It was an outlet for his writing, but the passion for soaps of a Claire Labine, Bill Bell, Agnes Nixon or Douglas Marland never shown in his writing.

I'd rate McTavish a lot higher than JER--who never showed any heart IMHO.

Under McTavish in the 92-94 period AMC was always number 2. Ratings started slipping (a bit) in '95, and FMB was getting unhappy with McTavish's more crazy stories so replaced her with Broderick. With a few story exceptions (Tanner, comes to mind) I LOVED Broderick's run but ratings continued to fall throughout her 90s run. A big part of this was due to DAYS' sudden climb (one reason apparently they started asking LB to do some more wacky stories like the voodoo one). FMBehr was fired from ABC, ironically, early on but Broderick remained with James for a while. As ratings continued to fall ABC in their "wisdom" rehired McTavish (as she was the last time they had stellar ratings). Of course her '97'99 run was probably her worst run overall (though the final year or two of her '00 run might beat that) and was full of weird gimmick stories that didn't work (bleeding tattoos, etc), though I suspect part of that was she was told to do more over the top stories, something, as I said, she's only too happy to comply with.

I totally agree, but everyone knows that already. I can honestly say that in the ten years I watched AMC, McTavish's first two years and the final year-and-a-half were the best. I don't know if I would have ever gotten into the show as much as I did if 2005-2010 AMC was my first taste of the show.

Just to be clear, you mean the final year and a half (under Broderick, S/K and Broderick again) right, and not McT's final year and a half which, even as a fan, I have to admit was pretty much complete [!@#$%^&*].

It's legal.

I laugh everytime a soap fan acts like whenever a company whoowns the soap uses an old cast photo they have to pay the actor...

Exactly I think that wouldbe mean spirited, and cause more resentment and confusion between fans who watch both. They don't ahve to bend over backwards to GH's storylines, but

Yeah because they should put the fans who watched both above the loyal OLTL viewers.
