Looks like I'll be bored to death if I watch this year. Say what you will about what's the best, but I honestly can't watch any of that sh!t. Maybe my mind's been poisoned by years of so-called "bad" TV, but I really don't feel like I'm missing anything.

+1. When I saw this I was like *yawn*

I feel the same way. The Emmys havent been the Emmys in years. All these shows Ive never seen before being nominated and others on one of the other 4 major networks not even worthy of a nomination. When did the Emmys become the Cable TV Awards??

I agree, honestly. I watch cable shows all the time though and don't watch any of this stuff. The stuff I watch -- Dexter, Weeds, Nurse Jackie, True Blood, Newsroom, Big Love, etc. aren't represented outside of the few acting nods. I'm so tired of Mad Men and I don't even like or watch any of those comedies but you know there is a problem when pretty much the entire cast of one show (Modern Family) gets acting nods.

I have no idea where you are getting that Walking Dead is not seen as cool or that GoT is known most for naked women. There is not a TV critic that has not hailed it as one of the best shows on TV, and its audience is so large is is only beat by Sopranos and True Blood as the most popular HBO show ever.

Popularity doesn't mean the type of chic the Academy likes. In terms of media focus, talk of GoT always ends up going more towards the gore, the high cast turnover, how confusing it is, and controversy over the portrayal of women. There is nothing sleek for old or middle-aged white men (the bulk of the Academy) to identify with. There isn't on Walking Dead either.

Shows like Mad Men and Sopranos are/were their fantasy lives. Cool guys who go around doing what they want, when they want, not encumbered by anything other than annoying family members or some personal demons.

Carl, I really think you don't know what you are talking about here in the slightest. The same people who nominated Mad Men and their male fantasy figure also nominated Downton Abbey. Unless Maggie Smith is who they secretly want to be, I don't think your theory holds up.

It also is possible Mad Men was nominated because it is better than the other shows.

Even most of the fans seem to say Mad Men (and 30 Rock) are long past their prime.

Downton Abbey is a period piece import, and that's always likely to get recognition, especially when it came with such hype.

They both are, defiantly.

They are both also still far superior to nearly everything else.

I'd halfway agree on Mad Men, but definitely not 30 Rock. I would put the Big Bang Theory, Nurse Jackie or even Curb Your Enthusiasm above 30 Rock at this point -- and I absolutely hated Seinfeld's humor. Hell I'm even willing to add Glee and Desperate Housewives to that list just because I never got the love for it and it's insane that it's still going on for 6+ years now. The academy just likes 30 Rock because they get to see and make fun of the internal system in producing television. It's very conceited.

I'm sad that The Good Wife wasn't nominated for "best drama series". So sad that "Parenthood" still doesn't get any recognition too. Ditto on "Community" and "Happy endings".

I absolutely hate "The New Girl", it's terrible and Zoey Deschanel is practically playing herself. Ugh.

I'm happy for Downton Abbey and Sherlock noms.

Walking Dead isn't seen as cool. It's more of a junk food show. GoT is known more for murder and naked women than quality of acting.

Mad Men and 30 Rock have that pastiche of hipness that makes the Academy feel relevant.

Mad men and 30 rock can be nominated and Win all they want, but both are low rated shows that people don't care about.

Thankfully you dont win an emmy based on ratings, or shouldnt.

Yea, just bc a show like TWD and True Blood may be popular and are huge rating powerhouses, doesn't mean they show be nominated and or win. Shows shouldn't be nominated base in ratings and or popularity, they should be nominated on what they show.

But the Emmys don't help shows bring in better ratings, it's just to give a high five on hard work people do.
