Tonight we have Boy George/Culture Club. If you haven't read Boy George's book, I highly reccommend it, candid and dishy, yet not exploitive. Some brilliant music came out of that group, much of it written by George about him and Jon's relationship (Karma Chameleon). He's been through alot of problems, but seems on a more even keel now, a great talent to be sure. This is one of my favorites, great message, and the bridge of this song is just awesome. Helen Terry's vocal parts in this just send chills down your spine.

One of thge best videos ever made, IMO... some of those scenes are kind of disturbing, that little girl crying at 2:12 is just so raw, and the little boy laying down to go to sleep on the rock, the woman in the wedding dress with the train on fire, etc.

You're right about her voice.

My favorite of their videos - a lot of playfulness which rarely seemed to be there in real life.

For all everyone talks about how things improve and progress over time, Boy George would never be popular today. He would be shunted onto Ru Paul's Drag Race.

Another very good video, which is very ahead of its time (that flashing back to past videos with sepia tones is now a staple of Youtube fanvids), and is better than the song. Check out the not so subtle innuendo between Jon and George.

Their Behind the Music, which gets very emotional for some of them and which got enough notice to bring up a brief reunion. This seems to be all that is on Youtube.

Your'e right about that, Carl... I don't think Boy George would be given any kind of chance today. That behind the music was great, I remember seeing it the first time, Roy talked about being dissapointed in their fame because he was caught in and endless gay soap opera. He was like "where's the drugs! Where's the girls?" He talked about one time that George wouldn't come out of his dressing room because he was mad at Jon, so Jon took a towel, soaked it in vodka, put it under his dressing room door and set it on fire. And then George come running out screaming "Did you see that?!!! He's trying to burn me!" Hilarious stories.

Tonight we have an artist who was critically acclaimed, but didn't find alot of chart success. Long John Baldry was primarily a blues singer, but had one massive number one hit in 1968 in the UK with "Let The Heartaches Begin", a ballad that was unlike anything he'd recorded before. He also had a minor hit in 1971 in the US with "Don't try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock And Roll", which was a big hit in Canada. He was close friends with Elton John and Rod Stewart, and Elton's "Someone Saved My Life Tonight": was written about him, as John is the one who convinced Elton not to get married to Linda Woodrow in 1967 to just accept his gayness and get on with his life (this was after Elton attempted suicide because he was desperately unhappy).

That generation of British musicians seemed to tap into soul so effortlessly - it's quite remarkable, and not something you find very often today, where, as with The Voice's recent singer Tyler James, soul means [!@#$%^&*] falsetto and constipation faces.

Too bad Baldry and Dusty never duetted.

I had no idea Bobbie Gentry would have a TV show in the UK.

He also did the voice for Dr. Robotnik.

They may be incredibly silly, but I love songs like this. wub.png They just make me happy.

Here's another of the same kind. It was originally called "Sind sie der Graf von Luxemburg?" but this is a Swedish version. The recording is from 1968.

Sorry about this little detour from the original subject of the thread. tongue.png

Tonight we have Rufus Wainwright. One of the first music artists to be out from the very beginning of his career, his father had a minor folk hit "Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road" in 1973. Here is a performance from his show, "Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! does Judy! Judy! Judy! " where he performs the entire Judy Garland 1961 Carnegie Hall album :

Uh oh, is this the Gilly storyline everyone seemed to hate? We'll see how I feel, but for now, I'm just glad Vivian and Gilly have screen time!  They've been sorely underused in 1995. I noticed in the end credits recently that the actress playing Vivian is on contract while her husband is recurring. I haven't warmed up to the Griffin character, as he's quite pushy and not overly endearing yet. I'm not quite sure if Wolf dons the Marian getup, I'll let you know, but I'm going to doubt it. They've all now realized Marian is a man, and Brent left his wigs/clothing at the house and he now has Lucy hostage in the lighthouse as Brent. I actually found an interview from 2023 that Frank Beaty did with this online Italian group who are big GL fans. I was quite shocked and happy to run across this! Frank seems to be a really nice man. The interview is a bit of a slog, because half of it is the co-host translating back and forth. But here are some pretty fascinating facts that Frank mentions: -He originally auditioned for the role of Matt Reardon, but didn't get it. The producers remembered his audition and offered him the role of Brent Lawrence later. How interesting! -He was offered a second year on the show, but declined. He wanted to find meaning in life, research his faith and start a new chapter in life. He said declining the second year was ultimately one of his biggest regrets. The storyline offered to him was Brent's rehabilitation in a facility that Amish Abigail was going to work in and help him with, and she and Brent were going to become friends... how interesting that could have been! -He was very close with Rick Hearst and Sonia Satra, almost like the three musketeers. -Makeup for Marian took 3 hours each time. Between the time commitment of that, the pressure of the show, and his personal life which was going through some really hard times, he said he had a nervous breakdown and couldn't continue functioning on set. He was very complimentary of Mark Wolf replacing him. -Frank is currently getting back into acting and is excited about his future (although 2 years later now, curious to see if anything came out of this). He's dating a woman in Paris, long-distance. Honestly wasn't sure if Frank was gay or not, but I guess this helps give insight there.

    • Well, I thought it was very exciting. The storm, the vehicles in trouble, at the hospital, that weird guy calling Jen, IzzyB very pregnant & also medically having problems & I thought they did a great job with the storm F/X. Even Alice helping at the hospital. Of course I always hated Tracy M. She just wasn't Carrie to me.
    • I am glad Brook Lynn blurted out the truth to Tracy and we get to see her reaction.  I really hope the show doesn't forget about Ned in this story. Since he appears so rarely, he tends to be the afterthought in all this.  That was a pretty large secret Lois and Brook kept from him for no real reason.  I need him to be able to show his feelings about being in the dark this whole time.
    • Perhaps they could’ve borrowed some febreezr from Nicole.
    • Javi is played by such an attractive actor and he’s saddled with such a terribly written role.
    • Thy ran out of Tide and didnt have any clean clothes to wear
    •  I wanna know why Naomi wasn't there, this is her Aunt and Uncle, no  way she'd miss it
    • Vernon actually had a cravat not a turtleneck. I didn't like Nicole's dress with her breastes prominent.
    • the tweet linked to https://www.forbes.com/sites/marcberman1/2025/05/02/ruth-buzzi-dies-the-rowan--martin-laugh-in-star-was-88/ That Forbes account of Ruth Buzzi said she'd had Alzheimer's for 10 years? -- they are quoting her facebook as saying that. But her facebook says this: Ruth Buzzi  July 24, 1936 – May 1, 2025 Ruth Buzzi died peacefully in her sleep at home in Texas. She was in hospice care for several years with Alzheimer’s disease. Ruthie loves you. --------------
