A lot of people love her. If I had not spent OLTL's last years doing nothing but seeing haha time mentally ill people, I might have more of a reaction.

This is also why, when people say that soaps should be more like reality TV, I think that they knock off reality TV in the worst ways. Reality shows are often about guffawing on cue at mentally ill people. American Idol even went so far as to beg viewers to laugh at people with physical handicaps, year after year after year. So now RC/FV have made an artform out of chuckling at the crazy. A gang rape victim is hilarious - let's watch her murder her therapist and do bird wings. A woman is almost raped by her father - she's 16 again, it's hot and funny. A woman is raped while believing she is 16 - that's just hot stuff, which man is she going to nail next?

And so on and so on. This is all RC knows how to write.

I don't know, i'm just kind of in awe of how trainwreck-tastic this storyline is and it almost makes me think she is doing this on purpose. It's reminding me a lot of Laura Wright, but just more fun - with Laura it kind of feels like she is missing the point a lot of the time because of how earnest and tenacious her portrayal is. You don't think she gets why you are laughing or eye rolling at Carly. You want to laugh at her ridiculousness -or blow her head off- but you feel you aren't supposed to. Sullivan is completely different. Yeah I think we are supposed to feel bad for Kate's predicament but I definitely think we are supposed to see Connie as funny for better or worse so it makes me think Sullivan is purposely hamming it up. But yeah she should totally tone down "Kate" though.

I definitely think Sullivan has gone to the Lucci/Wright/Kate Collins school of acting

Yes, there is nothing funny about mental illness. Whatever this story is suppose to be it stems from a traumatic experience in Kate's life playing this for laughs just cheapens that experience in my eyes. There are many people who are ashamed of their problems, who go through life hurting themselves and never seeking help because of the way society treats the mentally ill and this storyline just highlights the fact that we are suppose to laugh at crazy Kate/Connie who makes the funny faces. Not trying to be too heavy but sometimes I can't separate real live from reel life working in an emergency room doesn't help when you see the victims and survivors of these very things that are being made light of by the writers.

I think she is a much worse actress than Wright, Lucci, or Collins. She isn't even playing a character. She is just doing a lot of crappy acting and people are pointing and laughing at her for her crappy acting. I don't think it's deliberate or some type of great acting choice. She is the Charity Rahmer of GH, with the added bonus that once again RC gets to let us know how much fun it is to teehee about mentally ill people.

Was this writing similar in a OLTL storyline? I read on another board that RonC. did the exact same thing on OLTL not sure if it was the mirrors or what. Having mental illness hit my family I just can't laugh at it & like rape just don't find it entertaining...yes there are funny moments of course but IMO this whole thing is being played for giggles.

I think it's all a matter of what you have a tolerance for. Reality TV pokes fun at real life issues that are comparable and viewers seem to eat it up. Me I think it's just being used to get a reaction and generate buzz which is how RC has operated as a writer for a while now. His stories barring a couple all pretty much fizzled. The mindset is on liners are buzzing about it so it must be noteworthy or popular without it ever translating to anything tangible like actual viewing numbers. give me a couple of DeNiro like mirror scenes and it's great.

Comparing Kate Collins to this limited actress though is a joke. What I actually liked about KC is she actually had some warmth and vulnerability about her which KS does not.

If the show was treated as cheap trash, then I would get that, but it is often praised as the height of brilliance, phenomenal writing and acting, with people saying RC/FV need to "save" every soap, and give Emmys, and all the rest.

Which I've been on record on calling BS, as GH hasn't been at the height of brilliance with phenomenal writing and acting or Emmy-worthy since Bill Clinton was in office. I'm well aware of that, which is my only expectation of this show is to be entertained by camptastic hot mess. Ron and Frank understand that perfectly, which is a main reason why I give them kudos.

I get that, I just wish that this wasn't always in some sheen of critical acclaim or that the people involved saw it as trash. I'm not sure if they do. When Ron was at OLTL he was continually shocked that viewers did not see his work the way they were supposed to, especially his rape-is-love storylines.

The thing is what RC is writing is not ground breaking or revolutionary or great or brilliant. I can respect that some find it entertaining. But brad bell has been writing B&B like this for years and I don't see him referred to as the man to rescue and save the soap genre.

    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
