Just saw “The Boys in the Band” on Broadway. Our soap alums Tuc Watkins and Matt Bomer were fine (as well as great eye candy) and got off some funny lines, but the star was naturally Jim Parsons, who goes much darker and deeper than I anticipated in the very mean-spirited lead role. (I’d seen the movie years ago. Zachary Quinto is basically doing Leonard Frey pantomime as the venomous Harold, but his comic timing is spot-on) Overall, much better than its initial reviews and still very relevant in 2018.

I heard some were critical of Bomer so I'm glad he did alright.

(how much do they show in that anyway?)

I can't really see Quinto in that type of role, as I don't think he has the depth, but good for him.

Parsons is a very good actor. It's a real credit to him that he doesn't seem to have let Sheldon typecast him.

Meghann Fahy (Hannah, OLTL) is one of the leads on Freeform’s The Bold Type (its fantastic, watch it!) and she is quite good. Very charismatic. She’s also apparently dating Billy Magnussen (Casey, ATWT).

Sean Ringgold (Shaun, OLTL) is again on this season of Luke Cage with a much more sizeable role an what looks like an even bigger part for next season. This next actor is also on this season of Luke Cage and I can’t believe I even spotted him considering I didn’t watch Guiding Light during any of his tenure but Kevin Mambo (Marcus) is one of the antagonists this season. He’s very good and his Jamaican accent is top notch. It’s funny that GL had two very successful black actors in the mid-90s in the form of Marcus and David Grant and squandered both. We see this repeated with the treatment of Mishael Morgan (and every other black actor on daytime) 20 years later.

His in particular or all of them? I’m not Jamaican but I’m around the accent a lot and I thought his and Bushmaster’s were good. Anansi’s too. His wife not so much.

He really is, Jim Parsons. He goes for the nastiness, but you can really see the toxicity and self-hate peeking out behind it. And he’s funny as hell.

You see Bomer in tighty-whiteys from basically the jump. Impressive body, of course, as that’s what he’s paid for. He’s just... ok, but I feel like that part is a bit underwritten anyway. To his credit, he lands a couple of really funny lines. I will say that, even with Matt Bomer parading around in his undies in the first scene, you can’t take your eyes off Jim Parsons. He’s just magnetic, and he can make wrapping gifts compelling.

The guy I saw the play with REALLY hated Quinto. I thought he was funny, and the crowd absolutely erupted at almost all of his quips. But if you saw Leonard Frey’s performance in the original, Quinto’s version is a disappointing facsimile.

Sean Ringgold is in everything these days.

I'm surprised Boys has apparently gotten mixed reviews. I'd assume it's media's natural knee-jerk ambivalence to the play being un-PC, to be honest, as they've had for years, but I have no idea.

I am so behind on the Marvel shows.

    • I don't think Chelsea has a true label just yet. She's just finding out she has an interest in women. I think the awkwardness is aligned with the character as we've seen. This is the fool who keeps filming her family when embarrassing things happen and live streaming it. I actually think it's refreshing she isn't just jumping into a relationship  and that they're playing the beats of her trying to figure out who she is.
    • Wow, do I agree with you. Chelsea is coming off as ridiculous. All she does is look for a woman to date while not caring about her business at all. That she's bi is great, but they're not writing her like she's bi. She seems to be lesbian. Yeah, I know -- "no labels." I just don't find the writing for her story to be anything other than awkward.   -- I hope we get some diagnosis finality with Bill's trip to the hospital. I don't want to see these trips to the ER every other day. -- Naomi is going to blame herself for Bill's health problems? GMAB. -- Ashley doesn't read as a real nurse in the slightest. -- Another day, another rinse and repeat conversation with Derek and Ashley. YAWN. -- Kat is making mistakes, but she's fun to watch and listen to, regardless. -- I still think the Joey/Vanessa/Doug gambling story sucks. I know Doug is deeply in debt, but I don't like him acting this meek and submissive.  -- I'm not sure what Joey's plan was from the beginning, or why he had to seduce Vanessa at all to get his way. I'm not sure what Vanessa ever saw in Joey -- why doesn't he give her the ick? -- I'm fine with a story where Doug and Vanessa take out Joey.  -- The fades to commercials were pretty bad today.
    •   Victoria's house (that she long ago lived in with Billy) burned down (I think Aunt Jordan set it ablaze?). Victoria briefly moved into the ranch after the fire, with Claire, Johnny and Katie, I think? Mariah and Tessa and baby Aria had been living in the tack house but they bought a house we've never seen and moved there. Victoria, Claire, and Cole then moved into the tack house as soon as Teriah left. I guess Victoria's children Johnny and Katie would live with Victoria at the tack house eventually? But Johnny and Katie went to boarding school during the school year. Not sure if we'll see Johnny and Katie for the summer vacation or where they would live.
    • Victoria’s previous house burned down.    And I know why characters frequent Crimson Lights 3 times a day for brownies, muffins and empty mugs:   THERE’S PCP IN EVERYTHING.
    • Today was a good episode, and the week for that matter. I think they've also done a better job with background music. The scenes in todays episode weren't as silent as they usually are in the background and it was noticeable. I think the show has found its groove well and I'm still invested.
    • Garneau was in the Liberal party and his riding was in Montreal. He was the first Canadian in outer space.
    • I agree. I really have enjoyed this story from the beginning. I feel like it needed the time for us to care about Doug. They've done a nice job of explaining his motives and making me care for him. I still feel like he's doomed and Vanessa will end up being a widow and now I'm invested in that *not* happening now that I've fallen for him. Friday was good but so was the entire week. I think they're doing such a nice job of keeping things moving. We got good movement with Bill's story this week, Chelsea is attempting to date, Andre and Dani are having tough conversations about their relationship, of course Anita reunited with Sharon. There is *so* much going on and I didn't even cover all of it.  I wish all of the soaps would take a page out of BTG book and start rotating their stories. I love that everybody is getting a chance to shine and they don't just sit on one lead story to the point you get sick of it.
    • Did Jordan Clarke have a departure sometime between 1985 and 1989? I know Robert Newman had three runs: 1981-1984, 1986-1991, 1993-end.
    • Well, they usually weren't on the show at the time for long until the late 90's. But yeah, they really deserved a story centered on them, and not through the lens of Reva.
    • Chelsea was doing the absolute most today! Why was she introducing her sister to a woman she doesnt know? That whole scene was embarrassing. Madison needs to stay away from her bc she is too immature
