2012: The Directors and Writers Thread

Frankly, I think his (Brent Boyd's) comment reeks of disdain, which is unfortunate.

Would it kill these sons-of-bitches to hire a writer (or producer, or director) who actually loves the genre?

Amen. Not a great way to endear yourself to a soap audience. His "youth" and inexperience in the genre may well come back to bite him in his pompous, egotistical a**. Kinda hoping it does.

Brent Boyd, who wrote for Hollywood Heights, is joining Josh and Jill at Y&R. He basically confirmed it on Twitter.

And we all know what a rousing success Hollywood Bites was. One season only. Be glad your friends Jill and Josh got you a job at Y&R. Doubtful you could have done it on your own.

He's the new Hogan Sheffer! Maybe he can fully replace that hack.

Most of his Tweets are of a similar sardonic/condescening tone, whether personal or professional-related.

You get the sense that it's another washed up writer who moved to LA in hopes of making it in primetime and film, and had to "settle for less" by doing a soap.

It was only ever supposed to run for 80 episodes being a telenovela.

I assume Sally Sussman Morina (who I can't stand for other reasons) is also on her way. But at least she has some experience with this show.

Just curious. If a telenovela is extremely successful, do they bring it back for additional installments, or when it's over is it totally over, and hose characters and situations are never seen again?

Sometimes (very rarely) there are sequels or spin-offs, I believe, never actually a continuing format after the telenovela itself has finished. They always have a beginning, middle, and end and typically run for about 65-100 episodes (sometimes more).

No, it always has a planned amount of episodes. It can be extended for more episodes, but pretty much always it is followed by a loss of quality.

Mas Alla Del Puente was a sequel to the finale of De Frente al Sol

Seems like Boyd was predominately a playwright for most of his career: No surprise he might look down on soaps, most playwrights typically do, even if soaps were once the closest thing to theater than any other acting medium.

Brent Boyd (Writer) grew up in Minneapolis. He studied playwriting at various institutions in Minnesota, Iowa and Georgia. His plays include PRO BONO, THE GREAT BATES ESCAPE and the one-acts BIG TOP JEREMY and SEX WITH PIRANDELLO. He has worked as a screenwriter for major studios and several independent producers since 1999. His first produced feature, AURORA BOREALIS (starring Josh Jackson, Juliette Lewis and Donald Sutherland), premiered at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival. Another feature from Brent's work, CRAZY, and the short film, THE GREEN ROOM, have also traveled widely on the film festival circuit.

The more I learn about him, the less I like him. But I am sure he and Hoagy will get along famously.
