9/11 ten years later - Where were you the day the world changed

  • Members

I remember that I was asleep as it was all unfolding in the US.

But when I got up the following morning I turned on the TV as I finished getting ready for work it was on all the channels here.

My first thought was why were they doing a story on the WTC bombings since I usually watch either a feed of the Today Show or Good Morning America. It took about a minute before I realised that it wasn't and what I was seeing was something that was going to change the world and how we see things.

I remember being glued to the radio and TV for the next several days.

I even sent out emails to all my friends that were in the US and on the message boards that I belonged to asking them all to check in even the ones on the West Coast of the US.

This facebook page was set up by an aussie newspaper asking Where Were You?

http://www.facebook....wereyou?sk=wall

But there will be some that will be posting the conspiracy theories,

/ \ NEVER FORGET!!! keep the flag going

9/11 had a profound affect on people around the world. To this day i can still remember how helpless I felt being 17,000 odd miles away wishing that I was in New York helping out.

People always forget that it wasn't just American's who died that day. I forget the breakdown, but there was a lot of people from a lot of different countries in those planes/towers that day. :(

I was walking down West Broadway almost to Worth Street about 10 blocks north of the WTC with a clear view of both towers. I didn't see the first plane hit. Me and the people on the street didn't comprehend what just happened. Some people ran out of a nearby building and said a plane just hit one of the towers. We were just standing there watching when another plane came around and ran right into the building. It was just shocking. There were hundreds of people on street just looking up. Finally most people started walking north because the subway system had completely stopped. I live on the East Side, so by the time I walked home and turned on the TV, the buildings had already fallen. I could see a big cloud of smoke out my window. I can never explain that feeling. It was awful and all I could think about were those people that were trapped.

I will say, I've always loved this city, but after 9/11, I have never been more proud to be NY'er. Everyone came together that day and days after.

Now I lay me down to sleep...one less terrorist this world does keep...with all my heart I give my thanks...to those in uniform regardless of ranks...you serve our countries and serve them well...with humble hearts your stories tell...so as I rest my weary eyes...while freedom rings our flag still flies...you give your all, do what you must...with God we live and God we trust. Re-post if you believe.

It was a worldwide tragedy that is for sure. 24 Canadians were lost that day.

I was at home and was sleeping, when my grandmother came in the room and said that there had been a terrorist attack. When I turned on the television, I couldn't believe what was happening. Even ten years later, it still just leaves me in disbelief that something terrible happened.

I don't think it really hit me what happened until the first tower fell. I just remember my friend and I going, "There were still people in there. Lots of people...."

That was just so fitting, "The Sound of Silence" at the memorial in NYC just now. In the city for a solid two weeks, this was totally the feeling - all of it but especially the bolded part.

Hello darkness, my old friend

I've come to talk with you again

Because a vision softly creeping

Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain

Still remains

Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone

Narrow streets of cobblestone

'Neath the halo of a street lamp

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light

That split the night

And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more

People talking without speaking

People hearing without listening

People writing songs that voices never share

And no one dared

Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools", said I, "You do not know

Silence like a cancer grows

Hear my words that I might teach you

Take my arms that I might reach you"

But my words, like silent raindrops fell

And echoed

In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning

In the words that it was forming

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls"

And whispered in the sounds of silence
