Not to mention Jacqueline Courtney and George Reinholt leaving AW for OLTL along with Virginia Dwyer and Susan Sullivan leaving/being written out

Bill Espy and Donnelly Rhodes exiting Y&R and David H coming on

Bill Bell stepping down as HW at Days and Susan Flannery departing

Bridget and Jerome Dobson leaving behind GH for GL

Along with plenty more that made the Daytime headlines that year

As a heads up, there are some books at the moment missing from 1973 (along with two fast weekly weeks: Late June/Early July and Late August/Early September), also all of 9/2/73-10/28/73, but based on the "Days" Watergate preemptions (5/17/73-8/6/73, with one more 9/25/73), it looks like most of those should be covered by what we will be getting. We'll be missing whatever the fast weekly week is (either 6/25 or 7/2), plus that September week. So, a majority of the Watergate stuff should be available to us.

Thank you for the update.

I think the big issue for Y&R was that it was on 12pm eastern and the hearings were supposed to break each day at 12pm eastern for lunch until 2pm, but sometimes went over.

I have all the dates CBS broadcast the hearings, but not 100% sure which days the committee decided to keep going with testimony and CBS pre-empted Y&R

We know the number of pre-emptions from 1973 were 15. One being for Thanksgiving but not Christmas. Also from some other research I have 4 confirmed from Screen Gems from May. So I guess we could just do a process of elimination on the final 10. I have a rough idea so even having ratings weeks around that time might be helpful.

There is one possible Oct 25 one for Henry Kissinger's press conference that would be the only one I would not be able to fully confirm.

Other than the fast weekly weeks, we will still have the # of telecasts to compare, so that will be helpful too. Although during the big gap (9/73-10/73) the season changes in September, so we can't compare it to the August stuff, but the first data we get from November 1973 will list how many telecasts there were of each soap from season debut to that date. And the late August check would help confirm how many telecasts there had been from 9/72-8/73. Of course, we will never know the fast weekly preemption data, and in 1973 (like 1978), there may have been FIVE of those weeks, instead of the usual four.

FROM THE VAULT: WEEKLY DAYTIME NIELSEN RATINGS: WEEKS OF 3/24/75-3/28/75 & 3/31/75-4/4/75:

I just finished typing out the 4/14/75 week, and can confirm an end date change to How To Survive a Marriage. The show ended Thursday 4/17/75 (not 4/18/75), with a 90-minute First Ladies Diaries airing on Friday 4/18/75. I see Wikipedia has the competing info (one area says 4/18/75), but another area does note the 4/17/75 date.

I was just planning on this mainly to get the Days ratings, but it has conveniently turned into a nice project involving ALL the soaps, and the additional fun of getting a majority of the preemption data too!

Since this could involve Days as well (although I already have all the Days preemption info), what is this research involving Screen Gems??

Oh it was just correspondence between Bill Bell and an exec at Screen Gems who wasn't as optimistic about Y&R in 1973. They included the first 10 weeks of ratings and how many telecasts for each of those weeks, only missing one week for the Fast National.

If there was any Days stuff I would 100% share with you

    • +1 for Hayley, she got Dani deep in her feelings. Love to see it!
    • The Miracle of Versavix causes me to break my promise not to talk about it…  Today, we learned that Versavix doesn’t just treat sepsis—it reverses organ damage. Remarkable. Somewhere, fake-Dr. Joe Scanlon from Port Charles is owed a Nobel Prize. And meanwhile, Brady continues to fumble the bag, somehow failing to recognize the enormous financial and medical potential of a drug being administered to his own uncle. Classic Brady. Belle, Jada, and the Return of PTO Policing Belle remains baffling for many reasons, but her failure today was simple: all she had to do was tell Jada that Shawn’s father is hospitalized. Instead, we got more workplace drama. Jada grilling Belle about Shawn's paid time off was a perfect example of why personal relationships and professional hierarchies shouldn’t mix. That said, Shawn has only been back on the force for about a month. Realistically, he hasn’t accrued much PTO, which does make his absence questionable… just not for the reasons they’re implying. Meanwhile… There’s a Meth Lab on the Docks? The ongoing fixation on Philip’s recent scuffle—an incident that poses no broader public danger—is bizarre when you consider there's an actual meth lab operating on the docks. You’d think that would be the more pressing law enforcement priority. But this is Salem. Nu-Rachel: A Star is Scheming I have to admit, I like nu-Rachel. The previous actress skewed a bit too Wednesday Addams—brooding, but not calculating. This Rachel is clearly playing the long con. During a tea party, she casually dropped the Johnny adoption bombshell, and now she’s planting seeds of doubt about his character. She’s manipulating Kristen with finesse, all while hiding behind her frilly dresses and conveniently timed tummy aches. It's not easy for a young actor to play a convincing liar, but this one is pulling it off. That said, after mentioning John just yesterday, it’s strange that Kristen hasn’t visited him—especially considering the hospital is within walking distance. I suspect this has less to do with realism and more with the show avoiding flashbacks of John and Kristen.  Corporate Confusion: Salem-Style Speaking of odd choices, why is Alex operating out of an actual office while Xander, the CEO, runs his empire from a barstool with a cell phone? Salem business logic strikes again. Julie, Maggie, and the Case of the Vanishing Money It is nice to see Julie back doing hospital board work. That tracks, especially given her long history with the hospital, dating back to when Vivian Alamain first made a sizable donation upon arriving in Salem. But are we really pretending Maggie doesn’t have the means to buy the hospital outright? Between the Kiriakis fortune and her own assets—not to mention the mansion she could easily leverage—Maggie could outbid just about anyone in town. Let’s not forget: she married Victor, a man who funded an entire wing.
    • Ya know, I was just wondering the other day if they dropped the 'Is Dani an alcoholic' storyline... but nope! Haha
    • I think there is story but it's not story I think the current regime would do. I could easily see Brook Lyn fall in love with Dante and blow up her own life for a past she can't recreate, which would cause a lot of mess for Dante (and turbocharge her rivalry with Lulu). As has been mentioned before by @Vee I think I could see Gio playing the field for a while (as a slow burn if they are going to have this Gio/Emma pairing), or for the money and power go to Gio's head, badly (recreating AJ's steps in some way - maybe Jason stepping in to save him to help justify his presence). If they wanted to, they could even use Gio's presence for a more severe Dante/Sonny break, as he wouldn't want his son tied to the mob and would probably be an obsessive parent due to all the time he missed. Then there's Dante and Rocco, who could have a lot of story rebelling or withdrawing after Sam's death, Lulu's coma and return and Charlotte obsession, the arrival of a "perfect" son for Dante, etc. They could have his closeness to Tracy lead to a return of a resentful Dillon if he learns Tracy is leaving Gio a lot of her estate. I am not sure Mazza is the best actor for heavy material, but the roads are there. It's just not something I see the show wanting to do...but if they want to I do think there's a good amount of story potential in place.
    • God, can Willow be this stupid?
    • He can after...  I get why they went to Mona first; she's family and is more familiar with Leslie. Either way would've been ok.
    • Why doesn't Jacob question the head nurse Shanice himself?

    • It does seem like they're trying to redeem Ted and not allow him to go to the dark side (like Bill).
    • I feel like it's kind of the opposite. Mazza is a very charming, attractive guy. He could have easily just been there to look pretty and have a romance, if they had written him that way instead of clearly being unsure of how to use him. I think they've taken his likeability to stitch some story threads together for characters who were at a crossroads and also because it just adds more beat to the bone to have another Quartermaine or Corinthos on the canvas for dynamic moments.  I agree he could have been a decent Cameron, but they don't care about Liz and clearly they moved on from Cam/Joss (although I imagine some form of Joss/Gio or Joss/Gio/Trina may have been pitched). I can definitely see the retcons and inconsistencies. And I do think once the story settles down that will be what stays, unless they manage a higher quality of writing than they often do. On paper, there's enough potential with the various turns to where I don't mind the changes (it helps that I'm not really invested in any of the characters), but I know that Frank and modern GH writers don't care about strong storylines or aftermath. Regarding Lois, I imagine none of this was pitched to Rena when she initially returned, so I do wonder how she feels about it...personally it's probably the most I've been interested in Lois, but again I know it's not well told for her past character and they are probably going to not follow through with any real long term story that should be there for her and her family and friends.  (well, the friends not named Brenda)
