Macy's second run was too short for me to consider it better than her first. She had some pretty amazing material from 1989-1998 and thats where the character was defined. Her 2002-2003 stuff was pretty great, but I cant say it was better than everything that came before

Arianne Zucker has grown as an actress through the years but the writing for Nicole was better during her first run. And no, I'm not talking about the one-note drunk from 2005-2006 that some people only seem to remember. Nicole was one of the shows best characters in 2000-2003.

I hated Nicole in that time period. I didnt find her remotely likeable, rootable or interesting. She was too much bitch, with little to like ro find appealing. Since I started watching again last summer, Ive found her to be quite bitchy, yet at the same time very relatable and sympathetic. Thats in part to the writing and Ari who happens to be one of the most dynamic acttress on the set

They wrote her as strong and not weak. LOVED her rivalry with Brooke and how she wouldnt get away with any of her usual crap. Macy and Deacon were an unexpected but awesome pairing

What do you (or any other Y&R fan) think of Brenda Dickson's return? Did it measure up to her original run? What about Don Diamont? Giggly Heffa?

Brenda's first run was much better than her second.

Her first run was classic. She was affecting without being affected & gave real heart to Jill.

Her second run (despite some great moments) was really inconsistent.

Don's first run was solid but suffered a bit due to his (at the time) subpar acting.

In Don's second run he grew into a dependable (if somewhat limited) leading man (until Y&R threw him under the bus for Grambo).

My mom was a Holly fan from back in the day though she liked the 2nd Holly better then the 1st Holly. From what I read, Maureen Garrett quit the show because she was sick of Holly being such a victim. She was hoping that Holly would have become a stronger character after the whole Roger falling off a cliff story. I've read monthly outlines from April till she left in Nov. 1980.. she basically became a background character, mooning over Ed/Rita's marriage while worrying about her mother and brother.

So I would agree that the character becoming sarcastic, strong-willed, though still neurotic when returning in 1988 made her a more successful character.

Co-sign on Nicole from DAYS. She is a lot more interesting now then in her previous run!

I would also say Susan from ATWT but her first run was pretty good as well as her 2nd run

    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay.
    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
    • John Black actually was the ultimate good guy soap hero. So I don’t mind the town gushing over him. It’s deserved.
