Watching Eric post ratings from over a quarter of a century ago--and then pretend that his beloved ABC soaps are still "hip" and "contemporary"--is absolutely laughable. The fact of the matter is that AMC's and OLTL's horrendous current ratings merited their demise, regardless of the number of rants against Frons/ABC/Disney or the number of Hoovers bought.

It that's truly the case, then they all should go off the air. Looking at those ratings from the 80's compared to today's ratings, even #1 Y&R needs to be cancelled.

My point is most TV shows whether primetime or daytime don't garner the ratings they have in the past. Honestly, Nielsen ratings or so antiquated, so who is to say what really deserves to go unless you are the one making the decisions.

What's the latest on this anyway? Everyone seems so left in the dark as to what's really happening.

Though really, extended life or not, I can't see these shows lasting that long in this format.

I don't see a connection between the ABC situation and the CBS situation.

Well, there truly isn't a connection.

I don't see a connection between the ABC situation and the CBS situation. ABC fans in the internet age have always been more vocal and more rabid (for lack of a better word). That's just the undisputed truth. And many of those ABC fans never tuned into ATWT or GL and had little or nothing invested in them. It'd be nice if everyone cared about the whole genre and got fired up when any soap gets canceled, but that's just not how it is. I mean...where was the outcry when Port Charles was axed?

Did anyone watch that garbage??

Like I said being a powerhouse has nothing to do with both shows moving online. They have been cancelled on television. I am in that category Eric keeps crowing about....and I was mainly a CBS viewer back then...his golden [!@#$%^&*] doesnt hold water.

I'm trying to stay optimistic, I really want this to work, but the move to cancel-happy cable troubles me moreso than the move online, even if it means more ad revenue. I hope PP's online infotainment network is still a go, and if they can somehow get a cable network to air it as well if only for a limited time, well, that would be gravy.

Cable is too fickle to put all the eggs in that basket. They would need to be simultaneously building the strength of their online network, treating the cable airings like same-day repeats rather than the other way around. BTW, does anyone remember when Bravo aired same-day reruns of The View? I never watched, but I don't think that lasted more than a quarter, did it?

In other news, I see that Anderson Cooper will be replacing Oprah in my viewing area. The Chew, The Revolution, Katie, Anderson... where the hell am I? wacko.png

This is so true. That's why I get so pissed off when fans of AMC or OLTL say that their soap needs to be saved for the good of the genre. Most people--myself included--aren't interested in saving "the" soaps; rather, all they care about is saving "their" soaps. (I'm not bothered nearly as much by the selfishness of soap fans as I am by the fact that many pretend as if their efforts to save their soaps are not selfish.)

We shouldn't cancel a show because its ratings have fallen dramatically from where its ratings were in the 80's. However, we should cancel a show if it is not performing adequately when compared to other shows in daytime. By this metric, Y&R and B&B are the only soaps that deserve to stay on the air. When compared to the ratings of other network daytime shows (like TPIR, Y&R, The View, and B&B) the ratings for the ABC soaps and DOOL are absolutely horrendous. (OLTL does about as well as the much cheaper-to-produce LMAD.)

And most of these shows probably won't last beyond a year and a half. Katie and Anderson have been hyped for years and consistently failed (Katie's Today bubble excluded).

When was I saying that AMC and OLTL should be saved just because?

And you two aren't getting the point. The response to these cancellations were bigger than P&G. Did you see any of the massive outrage at GL and ATWT being canceled? No. Like I said, it seems like more of the general public has talked about this because of this extreme amount of YOUNG fans the shows had in the 80's. They aren't watching now but they probably were back then.

And honestly Soapsuds you are always saying something negative about AMC and OLTL, I have no idea why you watch either. You kept saying they sucked and you were done with soaps after ATWT.

What exactly would you like us to do? Mount efforts to revive ATWT and GL? Procter & Gamble owns those brands and it has no interest. Their fans fought for them to no avail. Prospect Park took the ABC soaps and intends to revive them. Would I love to see some form of ATWT or GL revival someday? Sure, absolutely. For a time I thought GL could do great with a Night Shift-style spinoff on SOAPNet. But it's not currently happening. Am I supposed to pretend this is unacceptable because the P&G soaps are not back too?

LMAO. My "beloved" ABC soaps. I only watch OLTL and have only watched since 2008. I was watching GL since the early 90s.

I'm sorry that I only have one week of ratings to post (the above ratings were for the week of March 7-11, 2011 and were re-printed at golden-road.net; the original source for this material was SON, yet the link to these ratings is no longer working); however, it proves my point on just how dreadful AMC and OLTL's ratings are when compared to other shows on network daytime television. Certainly, any rational person has to acknowledge that ABC made the right business decision by cancelling both soaps.

I never said ABC was wrong in canceling, I just stated why Prospect Park took them. But you are going to keep arguing your own agenda and put words in my mouth so oh well. whistling.jpg

Wait! Those are old. What do those numbers look like today, LOL!

It just a matter of opinion as far as I'm concerned. There are people that want their soaps. I want OLTL to survive. If that's selfish, then I'm one selfish bitch.
