That music thing actually is kinda cool--I've hated how more and more soaps use generic music, even for montages it's usually songs by people I've never heard of, andfrankly not very good (and don't get me started on the constantly re-used weird club music in bar scenes). Even up to ten years ago, you heard a lot more established songs (I remember Madonna in one AMC late 90s montage), and back in the 80s at their height, even when someone would have the radio on in the background it would be an actual hit song (to be fair in the early 70s the generic music they played was even worse).

I kind of agree with you but at the same time I like how soaps were always able to introduce lesser known artists to a wider audience. Remember when Rhianna sang "SOS" at the opening of Fusion on AMC? Who could've imagine either of them would last as long as they did? Jake and Amanda's wedding on AMC highlighted a singer named Dave Barnes. It was done in a clunky fashion but I think he was a decent artist.

OLTL did a wonderful job with this when they released their Songs of Love album back in the 90s. I will always think of my beloved Luna and Max when I listen to Cliff Richard's "I Still Believe in You." All these decades later, I still remember those couples and characters and I guess that would be the drawback.

Oh, the live performances I totally agree with you about (and of course sometimes they got somewhat big names, like Ne Yo at Angie's wedding or the many acts at OLTL for them as well). I meant more for montages or even background music.

Gottlieb did work hard to integrate the right songs into OLTL.

While I still find it strange when I watch UK soaps how they as a a rule, never use background music (part of their more realistic feel I suppose)--but they often have background music on and since they're all 8-12 months behind here in Canada, I always find it funny to hear a Girls Aloud song or some other UK radio hit I knew from a year back.

I loved Gottlieb's use of "theme" music for major couples and characters. I thought it added a quality finishing-touch to their stories/scenes. When she used Diana Ross's "Some Day We'll Be Together" on NYE for Viki and Sloan (Luna's "Love Line" radio broadcast), that was a thousand times better than reading a spoiler. : ))

How many still think of Luke and Laura on the dance floor whenever they hear Herb Alpert's "Rise" on an Oldies channel? Chic's "Good Times" will always remind me of Erica Kane's disco and those good times.

OLTL's two Jills (Phelps and Mitwell) produced some beautiful "music" together. Linda Ronstadt was thrilled when JFP chose her cover of "I've Got A Crush On You" as Viki and Ben's signature love song. It introduced her great talent to another generation. JFP also used a Diana Krall song for Viki after her first time with Ben. [The next year, it won a Grammy for Ms. Krall.] Later that same night, she used "Someone To Watch Over Me" as they danced on her terrace. That was followed by "I Belong To You" which moved Viki, Ben, Jessica and that whole umbrella storyline to the next day. The songs (and Mitwell's brilliance in directing romantic scenes) complimented the story. They weren't the storyline which now is to push product ("The Pussycat Dolls Stop In To Get Hot For Matthew" biggrin.png). I never did find out who was singing the post-coital "When I Look In Your Eyes" version in this clip. It sounds like Barbra to me because of the high pitch and range but ?

    • That works for me. And/or Dani could be in with a fast crowd and got involved with something shady and Bill came to the rescue.
    • I think judging from synoses of other shows, that the summaries are roughly in the order they played throughout the year. So Kubeck returned to a more crime theme. Maybe now that EON was competition they wanted that audience? Re Jameson Parker, the story goes that he was not pleased that TPTB wanted to tread lightly with the Dale/Ellen romance and he was taken to task over some improvs he added re touching Ellen in ways considered too 'racey'.So when his contract was up he quickly moved to OLTL as Brad.
    • I don’t think it was intentional. Because if it was, I imagine it would’ve been mentioned in one of those ‘Welcome to the Neighborhood’ specials that aired.
    • I mean, soaps are a world were 5'2" Eva Longoria can be a runway model...
    • I wonder if Michelle Val Jean even considered this. It seems so obvious to many of us.  If they want the Dupree name to continue, Anita and Vernon need at least one male heir.  Two would be even better.  Do you think Val Jean may have written it this way intentionally for some reason?
    • Agreed Anita and Vernon definitely needed a son or two.  The Duprees are the core family, yet the name practically doesn’t even exist anymore.  Some slot machines would be nice

    • I would have it come out that Dani was pregnant with Naomi while her career was still on the rise, and the idea of a Dupree having a baby out of wedlock would be scandalous, and Bill, who was starting out in his career, received pressure from Vernon/Anita to do the "honorable thing" and marry her and in exchange Vernon promised to help his new son-in-law out with his legal career.

    • Dani as a model never sat right with me, especially when some of the cringe dialogue was saying she was a rival to Naomi Campbell. Not trying to be mean or disparaging against her, but in no world would Dani/Karla Mosley's looks have ever have been accepted in the real world and ultra competitive high fashion modeling industry - certainly not 15-20 years ago. I get this is fiction, but come on...
    • Thanks @Paul Raven really appreciate this.  Did Parker Stevenson leave Somerset for OLTL, or was he written out by the show? The Ellen and Dale story seemed to get a positive response, at least in some quarters. Maybe that was too much for P&G. I didn't know about any stories Ellen had after the relationship ended so I'm glad to know a little more now. Seems like almost every woman on the show had to have some tie or desire for Julian. I assume this is not written in chronological order, but I notice we got from many typical melodramatic soap stories to all crime stories.  All this focus on Carrie, Vicky, Heather, etc. reminds me of how much the show seemed to cycle through heroines compared to how they settled on Julian. Who was the long running woman who got focus? Ginger?   I didn't realize this final headwriter was an unknown. I wonder if Henry Slesar may have recommended him? Or knew of the real him? Somerset had already had a long run for a soap spinoff, but I wonder if the show would have been renewed if Lemay and Rauch hadn't agreed to try their own soap...or if NBC/P&G were just done.
