I think it was just about Gottlieb and how her attitude turned the industry off, really.

The show then got a slew of Emmy nominations, and some wins, a few years later, I suppose once they felt she had gotten the message or learned her place.

It probably was Gottlieb. And even when Haskell, Howarth, Smith, and the writers won, the show was not nominated. AMC's "gay" storyline was a bit more palatable for viewers and voters though so the show won for that.

Strong Dose of Reality for ABC’s ‘One Life to Live’ : Television: The soap shows eight sections of the Names Project AIDS Quilt to conclude a summer-long plot examining homophobia and a gay teen character.

P.S From what I gather this is the same author that recently did the "reappraisal" of BTG

The OLTL story was much more heartbreaking, but I think the AMC story was risque in its own ways - namely in that the Andrew/Billy dynamics were now repeated with two gay men instead of just one. There was also the trash talk show aspect. If it got more awards love it may be down to happening 3-4 years later and AMC being a more awarded show than OLTL.

@Maxim Thanks again for all your clips and your thoughts on the show. Your views on the homophobia story - 30 years later - show the importance of the story. I often criticize "issue-based" stories on soap operas because I find them crass, exploitative, cowardly in many cases, hiding behind "awareness" for the sake of all kinds of horrors that do more harm than good (a recent Emmerdale story had a gay man who was thinking of coming out get severely beaten by another man he tried to meet - what a lovely message). Yet these stories, when told properly, can have a real impact. This one has a heart-wrenching impact, and the lessons taught about ignorance, fear, and trying to suppress the past feel more important than ever today.

Andrea Evans, between her Y&R stint and OLTL return presumably, pops up at the end of Out of Control, a Dave Coulier show that I used to enjoy as a kid. She's not playing her usual type of character.

Great find! I think Andrea used that voice when she played "Sharon Boozebourne" in a dream sequence on Passions.

I never knew that. I'll have to look for that clip.

You are... as usual... right on the money about these social issue storylines and how often they seem incredibly "crass" as you put it. I've seen some hardcore cringe through the years as Emmy-baiting became soaps' favorite hobby. It's especially pathetic when the second that storyline ends, it's never mentioned ever again, we never see the side characters ever again. Bold are masters of this.

And yes, the impact this storyline still has in modern days... is remarkable. In a way... also depressing, because I'm reminded how we've gone back and degraded as society. We all know why that is.

Also... after watching this masterpiece of a storyline... I'm just sad that this period of the show is not remastered and put on proper streaming. Watching it on these 240p VHS rips is just unfair to the material. It deserves to be seen in it's full glory.  I'm still grateful for the recordings... of course I am... but it's funny how we have some of the trashiest eras of soaps available for online viewing in pristine HD, but this... is almost forgotten.

Up to September 2nd, 1992.

OLTL- Sept 2 1992.jpg

"Trouble is a friend."

 🔷

Two new episodes, the show is FINALLY turning the page.

🔷

Looks like the Billy Douglas saga is wrapping up. His homophobic dad decided to pack his bags, claiming that his son and wife have become total "strangers" to him. To prove this to them, he took out old photos from their "happy" days. Billy corrected him. He reminded his father that even back then, when everything seemed picture-perfect, he was the same as he is today - gay. His line - “I've always been a stranger!” gave me goosebumps.

🔷

The Demerest baby is running a fever, which places Leanne and Jason in a difficult situation.  They need to run to the hospital, but they don't have money or insurance. I believe this is the moment they might get busted. The tension escalated further when Kevin received a call informing him that one of the doctors (a stunning woman that needs a leading role in this show!) at the hospital spotted Leanne and Jason. He and Rachel (Hank Gannon's daughter) are hurrying over... while Jason and Leanne are thinking of ways to escape YET AGAIN.

🔷

Blair Buchanan is having trouble laying in the bed she made for herself. The promise of a powerful jewelry dynasty is not enough to keep her away from Max. Typical - wants to have the cake and eat it too... situation. You can't have it both ways, honey. I've clipped the scene with Max, just to show how this time Blair is in the begging position. The tables have turned. And I love this. Now Max has to be even more stern and give her the cold shoulder every time she tries to gaslight him or manipulate him.

🔷

We saw the return of the Marty demon - that little witch that started the whole thing... and what really annoys me is how everyone seems to have forgiven her already. I hate when soaps do this. How many times do we have to get burned by someone to... just cut them off? I feel like the show is preparing some type of redemption storyline for her, involving that bizarre man who has infiltrated the community - Suede. He is an escaped criminal and probably a serial killer if you ask me. The man is giving me bad vibes. But hey... he and Marty deserve each other.

🔷

Overall the show is taking a breath of fresh air. We were submerged in darkness and toxicity for so long that finally getting opportunity to just enjoy an entertaining soap opera that is not dealing with overly complicated and disturbing themes is... just wonderful. I think the homophobia storyline ended in the highest point, and that's how it should be. It was just the right time to finish it, before getting too difficult to stomach.

🔷

 Overall - 10/10

Clip of the day

Blair and Max. How the roles have been reversed!

Marty will definitely have a redemption story.... and it's a big one.

Very big... and I was so surprised reading some of Maxim's recaps that she wasn't a nice character to start. Interesting how things change with her character and the audience reception.

I knew it! I've tried to stay away from spoilers as much as possible. OLTL was the show I knew least about... so this was a huge advantage in this regard. I was never interested in it before this year, so I only knew it as the show that had the woman with multiple personalities and the black-haired antagonist woman. That was the extent of my knowledge. Thank God, because I feel like I'm watching it with full anticipation about what's to come.

About Marty... it will be hard redeeming her after this, but not impossible IMO. The actress is really shining in the last few weeks. At first I was not that impressed, but lately... so many nuances I didn't see coming. And all of it is in the acting. She is really magnificent. And stunning too. I forgot her full name... Susan... I think it was... I don't google it so I don't accidentally find out she dies in year 1994 or 1995 on the show (the character). I've spoiled so much storyline by just googling actor names. 😁

Oh... the opposite of nice. Quite evil... if I dare to say. She did something unforgivable - created a rumor that an innocent man is a pedophile. In my eyes... you can't go lower than this.

That's why I'm cringing a bit... when I see Andrew (the man in question) has already forgiven her. Not only forgiven, but still wants to help her and enlighten her. But I guess... I'm not a reverend... and I'm the least forgiving person on this planet. 😁

You're in for a real shocker. Marty's story is probably one of the most iconic from the 1990s. I won't say any more than that.    :D

LOL, I know the feeling of googling an actor's name and you get unintentionally spoiled.  That will happen with Marty, so don't do it. I won't spoil the big Marty story coming in 1993, but it's so interesting to know she was pretty evil in her 1992 start (I didn't remember much of her during 1992 since I wasn't watching consistently nor since read much about that time of OLTL).

Susan Haskell!  She's actually married in real life to Thorsten Kaye btw (AMC/B&B). :)
