OLTL's HW Ron Carlivati Addresses Todd Drama!

The scribe recently hinted to Digest that the rumors (and multiple on-screen teases) surrounding Roger Howarth's (ex-Paul, ATWT; ex-Todd) possible return to Llanview aren't for naught. "We know that Todd has a different face and that's an established part of the story," he explains. "We're playing on that history and use it in the mystery that we started to tell with Blair and Tomas. The savvy viewer will notice. So it opens up a lot of questions and possibilities. There is definitely an element of the mystery that is connected to the way Todd used to look," he offers.

I can't tell if this is some huge tease or not, but airing a major Roger Howarth flashback episode was a huge step. Remember the man who said at the altar he didn't want his child to be ashamed of him? Look at what we have today. All Todd's children are ashamed of him. And they're right to be. And he doesn't care.

I like the concept - Blair and Tomas puzzle over what happened to the better Todd of 1995, and what has he become. But if this is Ron's idea of a "character-driven" story wherein we all must come to terms with the changes in Todd between his golden heyday and embrace today's Todd, he's barking up the wrong tree. It wouldn't matter who played this guy - he's become nigh-irredeemable since the rapemance. The character is ruined. I believe he's a sociopath and would rape anyone again. So for me the only way this storyline can satisfactorily end is that either Todd has some sort of tumor or DID or some sort of mental illness that has warped him so much, or it's not Todd.

What would the savvy viewer notice? If he means the painting then that doesn't take a lot of work to figure out.

I've heard people say, "This can't be Todd, he would never treat his sister this way," but for 3 years now Todd has treated everyone with contempt and hostility. And the show has painted this as being fun, and just being Todd. The show has spent so long reinforcing that Todd is above anyone and everyone that he could start punching out old ladies and people would probably shrug it off.

So let me get this straight, if there is two Todd's, does this mean the real Todd will go back to treating Jessica like his own flesh and blood, or will we continue to have the status quo even with the alleged real Todd back? I'm leaning towards the latter if such a thing was to happen.

Are you trying to make a funny? ;)

Because prior to his career in soaps, Ron Carlivati was just beginning his professional life as.... a lawyer. He did some sort of legal work for Claire Labine, who basically hooked him up with OLTL as a writer's assistant.

By the way... I totally agree: This interview pretty much said nothing.

    • Holly's final big story was the Sebastian mess in late 2004.   Vanessa and Matt were promoted to regulars near the end and were heavily recurring prior to that starting around 2007/2008.
    • Keith has a softer presence, but it would have helped to see him be more aggressive or proactive in protecting them instead of standing around like a mannequin. A man the audience should be hoping and wishing gets back together with his wife. Nicole needs a new husband!
    • She needs to learn to be honest with her husband about her lusty interests because being sex positive only works if you're not cheating on your spouse.

    • Very disappointed in the writers in the way they are screwing with Nicole, Ted,  and Kat to make Leslie remain viable. So many holes everywhere.
    • Somebody brought this up elsewhere which emphasizes why this NuTed appears as such a weakling. Why is Kat doing what HE should be doing? And that's everything he can to rid him and his family of this crazy woman. Kat is doing all kinds of things she shouldn't do but now I understand her more. She can't count on her father to eliminate this woman because he's a wimp. He's been too busy inviting her into his home and serving her drinks and offering her invitations to birthday parties. WIMP!!!!

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.
