CBS First Among Wealthy Demo

<span style="font-size:120%;">CBS says that it had the most upscale audience in the 25-54 demo through the first week of the new television season. The network says it had 14 of the top 25 shows in the 25-54 demo among viewers who make more than $100,000 a year - more than NBC, ABC, and Fox combined, according to Nielsen NPower. This included four of the top 10 programs.

Overall, CBS scored a 3.9 rating among wealthier adults, those ages 25-54 with a household income of $100,000 a year. The network tied with ABC in that demo and at that income bracket. Among the top 25 were three CBS freshman programs: Mike & Molly (#9), Hawaii Five-0 (#14), and Bleep My Dad Says (#17). Again, that was more than any other network.

CBS’s other programs in the top 25 shows among the 25-54 demo making $100K a year include The Amazing Race (#11), NCIS (tied for #11), How I Met Your Mother (#17), 60 Minutes (#19), Rules of Engagement (#20), Criminal Minds (#22), Undercover Boss (tied for #22), and The Mentalist (#24).

CBS is touting these numbers because advertisers typically desire wealthier viewers, who tend to buy higher-priced products and are more difficult to reach, since they watch less TV than the masses, writes MediaPost.

Among Younger Viewers

Among the slightly younger demo of 18-49s, ABC was tops in the first week, with a 3.2 rating. CBS followed with a 2.9, while NBC and Fox trailed with a 2.4.

it's always how you spin it. CBS may have the most shows but at look which #1 is the first CBS... This means there are ten other shows which are even more desirable than anything on CBS.

# 1 is probably Desperate Housewives. Glee should be amonst those shows as well. Any others?

Glee is #1 which makes sense since they're also #1 in ad rates for scripted shows.

Early-season results have ABC claiming top-dog status among upscale TV viewers -- one of the most prized TV groups for advertisers. Fox's "Glee" scored the best results of any single TV show.

ABC says for live-plus-same-day ratings in non-sports programming, it posted a 3.2 rating among 18-49 viewers who make $100,000 or more. CBS was next at a 2.9, followed by Fox and NBC tied at a 2.4 rating.

ABC was also tops when it comes to viewers with four years of college. The network had a 3.4 rating; CBS, a 3.0; NBC, a 2.7; and Fox, a 2.4. This repeats ABC's strong results from recent seasons.

Historically, TV advertisers desire upscale viewers for a number of reasons. They usually buy high-priced consumer products, and they are hard-to-get TV viewers.

In this exclusive demo, Fox's "Glee" has been one of the season's high points. The show easily had a top rating of 8.5 among 18-49 viewers making $100,000 or more.

ABC had six of the top-15-rated shows for upscale viewers: "Modern Family" (6.9 rating) ranked second after "Glee"; "Dancing with the Stars" (6.5) was in third place; "Grey's Anatomy" (5.9) was in fourth place; "Cougar Town (4.7) took ninth place; "Dancing with the Stars: Results" (4.6) earned 11th place; and "Desperate Housewives" with a 4.4 rating took 14th place.

The best-rated show for NBC was "The Office" at a 6.7 rating, good for third place. CBS' "Big Bang Theory" took a 5.5 and a sixth-place result.

Although its results have not been included here, NBC's "Sunday Night Football" also gets a high percentage of upscale viewers, especially men. Many TV advertisers tend to view sports as a separate and different TV platform for their brands.

The wealthy have clearly lost any sense of taste whatsoever.

The post should have read...

Big Bang at #6 wasn't included in the original article.

Thanks Toups, overall really interesting topic.

Now we know that even though Cougar Town burns through more than half of Modern Family's audience they manage to keep 2/3 of that desirable demographic which is probably considered not too bad by ABC.

I always remember the argument that Studio 60 would stay around because it had a wealthy demo.

Being an expensive 1 hour show probably factored in too (the cancellation). That's why the cheaper sitcoms get renewed.

But Mike and Molly were.

It was preachy, sappy and didn't know where it was heading to. An awful show.

You'll be happy to know Aaron Sorkin has a TV project coming up. laugh.gif

Toups, that "4 years of college" demo was interesting, seeing as how I personally know 3 people who have had 4 years of college, are all over 40, and living with their parents. I also have known many college graduates who ae basically educated idiots. I also wonder why they seem to think high end consumer merchandise is more desireable to sell on TV. What is there besides cars and jewelry, and maybe clothes? To me, especially in a bad economy, NECCESSITIES that everyone uses would be the most desireable advertizers, as those products cast the widest net, so to speak. I also see no mention of the network that would seem most obvious for the high income viewer... and that's PBS.

This "educated idiot" had said all that needs to be said.

I really didn't get alphan's stream of thought: PBS is the network for high income viewers? That's a joke, right? As is the line which says that high end consumer merchandise is undesirable to be advertised?
