TALK: Overnight Ratings Strong, Should Soaps Be Worried?

Passions (even if it technically was a soap) was the worst possible replacement one could ever imagine because it was the most poorly written and acted program in television history. Regardless of how awful The Talk will become, it will--on its worst day--be far superior to Passions on its best day.

 Seriously? LMAO

Passions may not have been Shakespeare but it was entertaining and 2000-2003, was so damn good television. Give me Passions over 5 washed up women talking about bland topics with even more washed up guests. Christie Brinkley? Jennifer Lopez?

What was go damn good about...

Theresa: ETHAN! OH ETHAN! OH ETHAN!

Gwen: Stay away from my man.

Ethan: Don't talk to Theresa that way!

X 1,000,000?

I'm not saying I "like" The Talk, but I agree with Max. I'd rather watch a hamster in a wheel for an hour than to watch Passions. Same desired effect, repetition. And probably cheaper to produce.

I watched the 2nd episode of The Talk. It's actually pretty good. I like it and will watch everyday. Remember, The View took about 9 years to take off.

I don't know if daytime has 9 years left to wait. I won't be that surprised if 9 years from now, daytime is entirely made up of reruns.

I did think that The Talk was mostly garbage, and it was laughable how Julie Chen kept insisting that the cast had such amazing chemistry. However, one of the few positive things about the show was that (in stark contrast to The View) there were no loud-mouth co-hosts trying to shove their political beliefs down others' throats. Also, I think that this show would be much improved if Julie Chenbot/Mrs. Moonface was replaced with someone else. (Of course, that will never happen.)

It's only a matter of time. What else is Leah Remini there for?

I saw the first episode via YouTube...have to say, wasn't half bad. Christie Brinkley was a brilliant first guest, she's likeable and a beauty with class in the same vein as Jaclyn Smith, a woman I expect to see on the show by the end of the next Sweeps. I wonder if my darling Joan Collins will be on soon to coincide with her guest shot on 'Rules of Engagement'...

Certainly, all the women are in fake 'nice' mode out of the gate and things WILL deteriorate to View levels...what I found interesting was how blatant a rip off this show is. There's NOTHING original about it. Julie Chen might as well have been Barbara Walters, in that sweater set, sitting in the exact same position at the table Barbara sits in when she's on The View.

I am an unabashed Sharon Osbourne fan, I think she's magnificent fun and a really ballsy woman. Leah Remini was surprisingly engaging and self deprecating. Sarah (smart lady she is owning part of the show, Roseanne would be proud), Holly and Marissa weren't offensive at all.

The numbers, for daytime, are strong. If the show settles around 1.6 (give or take a point) CBS is going to laugh all the way to the bank. The demos are good, the show is cheap to run and CBS has a healthy ownership stake in it, none of which ATWT could boast.

Brilliant post. Cat DaytimeFan, my dear... have i told you lately that i love you? Because i do.

This is kind of how I feel about it as well. Brinkley was a charming guest but I do hope they all go into "View levels." Mainly because, to my shock, THE VIEW appears to be a place for far more in-depth conversation than THE TALK. It did become somewhat annoying how they all talked about one cliche after another (like that review says) so I hope they relax and let things happen. And, you're right--not that I ever believed that THE TALK would be "different" than THE VIEW, but it was a complete copying of the format. Even down to the sign-off line. Blatant is a good word for it. However, that crap about sex talk... it was just embarassing, simple-minded and wrong.

Lets not forget tho how long it took the view to get watchable and in depth and good.

There are 6 or 7 hosts, whereas most talk shows only have a few, not to mention Sara Gilbert will get some of the profits (isn't she co-owner?), and this is a Julie Chen show, which means Les Moonves probably won't spare any expense.

With 6 or 7 hosts still comes only one set, one crew thats prob 1/4th the size of a soap, less writers, etc all around.

Still much cheaper than any soap even on huge budget cuts, i bet.

I didn't need NPR to tell me it was an insult to women. But even more, the people who insult women the most are women themselves for watching this garbage. There is literally nothing any of these women can possibly say that is even halfway interesting, and to watch it damages the brain. It's shows like this that can make a man wonder just what is wrong with women. To think that someone would have the idea that this show would appeal to me and my demographic would be the height of insults, and I am glad I am not the one being insulted. Who cares that these people are mothers? Where is the show starring cousins?

Outside of watching Star Jones or Rosie O'Donell in trainwreck mode, when has The View ever been watchable?

I was quite fond of the show from inception to even now.

Meredith Vieira rocked The View and she was fun but she always kept it classy. She left at a good time.

Which is the same as ATWT, but The Talk is a cheaper show to produce.

People(and by people, I mean bitter ATWT fans) were expecting this to bomb out of the gate.

I expected better but, overall, a good start. Ironic, ATWT needed a 2.1 to stay on air. I don't blame CBS for wanting to make more money and ending ATWT and GL were smart moves for the network; however, it sucks for me. CBS has always had trouble with morning shows (The Early Show; CBS This Morning; The Morning Program; CBS Morning News) and I've never understood why. The Early Show isn't any worse than GMA and The Talk will probably be similiar to The View. Either way, Talk is here to stay and, if it does well, could easily be expanded into a 2 hour mid-day show: Watch out Y&R!
