Oprah-Season-Premiere-Final-Season.jpg

The final season of The Oprah Winfrey Show premiered to a 6.8/17 household rating/share on Monday. That's up 3% versus last year. Some might have hoped for more for the final season before Oprah heads to OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) on cable, after being pummeled with series lows during the summer…up is up!

Oprah spinoff The Nate Berkus Show premiered to a 1.2/4 household rating/share, up 20% versus the average for the time period last September.

I watched Nate's show and hated it. It looked so cheaply produced. The studio looked so damn small...ugh....

They are cancelling soaps left and right for talk shows/game shows which are getting worse numbers and demos.

I like Nate Berkus, but has he ever been on any show beyond Oprah? Clearly he's not Dr. Phil, although I'd much rather see him with his clothes off...

I still think we're going to reach a point within 5-10 years when daytime is all reruns and no real new shows whatsoever.

The problem becomes not whether they're cheaper than soaps but if they're cheap enough to warrant not just putting in reruns or something like a court show. Most of these talk shows aren't replacing soaps, they're replacing other talk shows. I wonder how many losses the talk show market will face before they dry up again.

Yeah, but just about every talk show has a name. This one is interesting tho, because its an NBC talk show not a syndicated talk show.

Talk shows in general are interesting to look at, because it seems rather random what ones are a hit and what ones are not.

The Talk however is replacing a soap opera, and i dont see how one like that cant have a bigger budget han most with all those hosts.

There isn't a market for a show like his in daytime TV. They can't expect for Nate Berkus to have awesome households and demos when he's giving out furniture and painting walls advice. It didn't work for Martha, won't work for Nate. For Nate to work, they have to be realistic. His brand of advice is for a niche audience.

Aside from Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray, her spinoff talk shows have sets and theme songs that look like infomericals. Dr. Oz's New York studio couldn't look more bland. I wouldn't have expected any less from Nate Berkus. The only problem is that Oz actually has topics that interest everyday Americans and actually has a more lively personality. Nate often comes off to me as stuffy, pretentious, wannabe. Not to mention that hair. YUCK.

And what's your beef with talk shows/game shows? It's not like we've had six soaps canceled in a year. There were only two(that actually mattered) canceled in the past five years: ATWT and GL. And Nate Berkus is syndicated, just like most daytime talk/game properties, so I don't understand why the hell you're getting all pissy about it.

And as other people have said on the boards, even if the numbers for these upstarts are dreadful, they need at least two-three years to build an audience or a following. Hell, The View flew under the radar for ten years before they added Rosie O'Donnell and Whoopi, which pretty much sent the show into the ratings stratosphere. If The Talk pulls in dreadful opening numbers, don't think CBS will panic and just yank the show off the air. They will stick with it for at least a good five years.

And expect to see Nate renewed, especially if he shows even the slightest bit of growth.

Ouch, that sucks. He's adorable and I was hoping he would do well. I only caught the last few minutes of the premiere episode so I can't comment on how good the show is or not. He managed to almost completely hide his nervousness, though, which is to his credit.

But, what's with the OPRAH part of the news? Another site said she was actually down from last season's premiere (which they tried to make into a big deal, even though it was only a difference of 300,000 viewers).

    • Heffa? Girl, bye? MONA!!!!!!!!!!! I'm rolling.
    • It was just inexcusable. SMH. I'm surprised Lisa Brown didn't change it somehow.
    • So many things would have had to be different for Mary to want to go back to Reginald. It could have been interesting if it had been handled completely differently but as it was we had a very black and white Mary good/Reginald bad. If she had been able to ignore his worldly crimes and how he treated his own children there was still the fact that he had separated her from her children. Maybe if they had shown us more intimacy and affection between them and had allowed him to have real vulnerabilities it could have worked but as it played out they didn't do much to present him with any sympathetic hook. There are a lot of ways to define wanting things to work. Fans are mostly thinking of preserving or restoring characters and an atmosphere that drew them to the show. The sponsor may only be thinking of the bottom line. When a producer or HW comes in and decides that their vision will deliver for the bottom line and they need to fire most of the cast in order to do it it can feel very much like not caring.
    • I remember this getting a lot of criticism at the time.
    • Maeve breaks me reading that letter. If you ever need to cry, look it up. Other than the dopey line about Henry wanting to come home to Van's rice (or tapioca) pudding (VANESSA CHAMBERLAIN DOES NOT COOK, Y'all...) it's a sweet sign-off to one of the best father/daughter relationships on soaps. Other than Ross, and Bill (if he says something, which I assume he does) and the letter, the rest of it is BS. I haven't watched it in a while, but it typifies what I dislike most about events that should be laden in history. The writers are too lazy to do the work and get it right. And it becomes about making sure characters X, Y and Z make their guarantees. Roger being there is an abomination. Henry never ever saw Nola as a gold-digger. She and Quint were practically engaged before he even knew Quint was his son. Before that, he was fairly close to Bea and enjoyed Nola's spirit. And Henry never helped Rick become an Eagle Scout.  I get that maybe you don't want to play Amanda#1 or Dinahs 1&2, or Billy, Trish or Alan #1 clips, but damn it....don't make stuff up. I'd have much rather watched clips from Henry, Vanessa and Ross' early days than Rick blather on, or nuMichelle try and dig for a human-like emotion or wonder why after TEN YEARS, Dinah and Quint have never met.   Do not remember anyone named Tina. I barely remember Dahlia, and that's mostly because for a while, I saw Sharon Leal in everything after she left GL.   Reva and Josh airhogs? ALWAYS, darling. ALWAYS. RME. I hate to tar and feather Robert Newman with that brush, but DAMN.
    • Oooooooooooooo a Jazmen script off of a Sara Bibel breakdown.    I'm intrigued. Lol. Yeah, one thing I can say for sure...when SilkPress is about to have a crazy moment, they do give her music.
    • I am so happy now. Reminds me of the 80s show I loved. Ron really did the cast and fans dirty. The only people complaining are those who only knew Ron and his whiplash plot driven stories
