I think Brenda was ill, or some sort of contract kerfuffle?

Jerry Douglas did one of those SOD stroll down memory lane photo interviews back in the mid-'90s.  In reference to the picture of him and Deborah when she was a permanent recast, he said something to the effect that she was his favorite Jill.  He loved the layers she brought to the role (this was pre-Jess, he was essentially comparing her to Brenda).

Based on old newspaper stuff I can find, Gideon took over the role as Y&R moved to 60 minutes long in February 1980.

By late March, it was reported that audiences weren't taking kindly to her. In May, someone wrote a letter to a soap column asking if Jill was still part of the show, so it looks like Bell limited the character at that point. Adair took over the role by late September.

Going by SOD synopses of the time Jill was backburnered after Bonds initial appearances. The whole Jill at Jabot story was sidelined and Brett Halsey as John was dropped. There was so much going on at that time with the transition to 60 mins.

Here are Jill mentions in summaries of that time

FEB 80

Liz forced Jill to do housework.

Jill turned purple when Liz offered her the house since Liz will marry Stuart.

Despite Jill’s warning her no one will think she’s good enough for Stuart, Liz intends to marry him.

Jill asked Derek to prove his love by giving up Kay and her money.

MARCH

Derek told Jill he couldn't leave Kay yet. Jill spitefully told Liz that she (Jill) was pregnant when Stu married her.

Liz went into a tailspin after believing Jill's story about being pregnant by Stu before their marriage.

 Steve was smitten with Jill

Jill told Kay that Derek is only interested in her money.

APRIL

Jill freely confessed her lies to Stu and Liz, who agreed to marry.

Peggy admitted she can’t stand the sight of Jill.

MAY

John Abbott of Jabot Cosmetics hired Jill.

JUNE

Peggy was upset that Steve has been seeing Jill.

Peggy set out to "save" Steve from Jill.

Jill scored points with her boss, John.

John was immpressed by Jill's new product suggestions

JULY

John's son, Jack, took an interest in Jill.

Jack took an interest in John’s company to get closer to Jill.

Jill used John and Jack to get ideas to advance her career.

AUGUST

Jill told Liz she plans to be second in command at John's company.

SEPTEMBER (Deborah Adair takes over)

Jill and Eve became roommates.

Steve stuck by Jill's side, even after Stu fired him and blamed him for Peggy's condition.

OCTOBER

John fired Jill for her mistreatment of Julia's modeling, but Jack insisted the layout was his idea.

NOVEMBER

Jill played "musical beds" with John and Jack by feigning illness to bust a date with Jack, then rendezvousing with John.

Jill advised Eve not to accept Victor’s bribe to leave town with Charles

Obviously those summaries don't give every detail but it points to the fact that Jill was only getting a few appearances per month even after Deb took over.

There was rivalry with Peggy Brooks going as they were both involved with Steve Williams and then Jack Abbott.Bill chose to drop Peggy, but had she  stayed around that could have really come into play. Maybe down the track Peggy could have taken the pics of Jack and Jill in the cabin and played a variation of the Lindsay Wells story?

    • It was nice seeing Victorias house and I see it’s been remodelled. I’m sure this happened awhile ago but since I tuned out from the show for so long I am only noticing it now. Looks beautiful though!  Also, Billy and Sally gross me out so much. I don’t know what it is I hate so much about them. They give me the ick. Definitely a mismatch. I don’t buy that these people would be attracted to eachother in real life much less have a relationship..

    • Also, isn’t there supposed to be a storyline with Mariah and Tessa? Mariah cheating or something (keeping some kind of secret) and they were only on screen 2 and 3 times this month. Like what? How am I supposed to care when I barely see them?
    • Definitely wouldn't trust Dinah right now haha.  But that's great to know Billy comes back soon!  I'm excited for that. If he's at the boardinghouse, then I guess he does get closer to Nola perhaps, and then he'll be around Peter/Bridget and J, who is currently in his orbit along with Michelle and Dahlia, and Marcus is at the boardinghouse, so maybe they go the teenage story route most of this time until Billy gets back.
    • Sounds like me, but I prefer to be referred to as Contessa. We all know I can go a long time not paying attention to certain things.  And, if I might add, hey there dude, you effed up pretty good this time and I think this was your last chance. So don't let the door hit you in your behind as you go BYE MOMMY!
    • That did cross my mind at first, but I'd be more inclined to believe it if this didn't involve Trump. I'm not at all sure he is capable of being that sneaky. Of course, there's always a possibility I guess that his advisors are doing it without telling him, but that seems awfully risky. Trump is such a loose cannon you can never predict what he's going to do or say.
    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.
