Yeah Jesse's death was a major shocker. There were no spoilers back then, so it came as quite a surprise. Yeah, they killed him during the 88 Writers Strike. They brought back Pamela Kingsley to create friction between Travis and Erica. Pamela wanted revenge on Erica for breaking up her parents' marriage all those years ago and she planned to go after Travis. That's how I remember it. They gave some lip service to Pamela's affair with Mark years earlier and they were flirting with having it create some conflict for newly married Mark and Ellen who were in backburnerville. Nothing came of that, since the writers seemed to be bored by Mark and Ellen. The Pamela/Erica/Travis stuff went nowhere.

Did Darnell Williams want to leave or did they just get rid of the character on a whim? I had always thought it was a big shock but then I'd heard he might have left but not with the exit the interim writers gave him.

Did Mark and Ellen have any other stories before they were written out?

I think it was Darnell Williams' choice to leave. They hadn't done much with Jesse and Angie over the previous couple of years except be supporting players in the Cindy AIDS storyline. Pretty sure it was his decision.

As for Mark and Ellen, after they married they never had a storyline of their own. Their scenes pretty much revolved around Julie and her problems. It was Kathleen Noone's choice to leave. I remember her saying at the time that the vision for the show had changed and that she wasn't an integrel part of that vision. I think Mark LaMura's departure was one of those "mutual agreement" things. This happened just before Felicia Minei Behr took over in 89. She fired several actors whose characters were too peripheral to the main families. I have a feeling Mark and Kathleen, had they remained into the Behr era, would've eventually gotten the axe under her.

Too bad they killed Jesse off. If he'd left in another way Angie might have had more of a chance without him. As it was the only real stories Angie has had since then, on any of her shows, have usually involved Jesse or a doppleganger.

I wish they could bring Ellen and Mark back in some capacity. The work from Kathleen and Mark holds up very well and I think they could be used to bring new characters onto the show. I know Kathleen said she enjoyed the bitch/crazy/kooky roles more but she really had something as Ellen, a real strength and dignity.

Here's a fun little read of the AMC characters breakdown from the 1978 book "The Soap Opera Book." I think Eric has mentioned this book a few times. Is it the soft cover with a purple cover? I think there was a hazy scene of a Search for Tomorrow set with Val Dufour and maybe Mary Stuart on the cover? Eric, is that the book? I think this is what I found at the Strand Bookstore in NYC about 20 years ago, but I've since lost it. Anyway, the character descriptions are fun. Lots of typos "Line Tyler!". Seems like such a different era, yet it wasn't THAT long ago. I don't remember the Clem Watson character.

Ah yes, Pamela Kingsley was the one Oprah introduced herself to during her now infamous guest spot.

The last stuff I remember about Mark and Ellen was their solar powered house, then moving to Japan. And yes, Noone said a couple of times in the press that she didn't want to come back to soaps unless she got to play a bitch.

Great work, thanks! Rachel Gurney was played by Portia Nelson as Khan pointed out. I didn't even recognize Silver, the image fixed in my head is her mousy/glasses look that Erica later emulated when on the lam.

    • Spoke with my contacts at Lifetime. As of now, there is nothing to share in terms of updates.
    • Which is still a form of manipulation. Granted it won't work because Ted isn't interested in Leslie at all no matter how much she tries to make him look like a horrible person. When you consider the situation with Hayley it does make sense why Anita would take that approach.
    • Another good one and great episode to start off the week. Confrontations, character moments, movement, and an awful lot of bubbles on display. lol.    I've found myself liking Sara Bibel breakdowns. And this episode might be why. I sense movement of plot going on. And Jazmen being on script duty has already become a highlight for me. So this episode dealing with more fallout from the SilkPress/Eva reveal was another good one. And even got a solid B plot moving in the Vanessa/Doug/Joey storyline...which I just said yesterday...has been the only one of the B plots...that has real build to it so far.    You are not a real soap pariah until you get dragged and a community treats you as such. So basically another old school soap vibe that Eva is giving me. Watching her trying to find her footing only to be read by just about everyone she has encountered has been great. It makes her so rootable. And she's played by an excellent actress. Cuz that quivering lip at the end with her and Anita...ooooo some of you all seem heated for Anita making poor girl cry even though it's her fault. That's great acting. Not to mention writing.    I also love that the side character got their point of view. I loved Mona moving about town trying to get info to avenge Nicole in a way. And she dragged Eva. She read Silk Press Sheila. And that 'enjoy the burn' was well-said. And did I see a spark with Mona and Randy? Hmmm. I don't mind.

I also didn't mind that Martin/Kat scene. I enjoy their sibling relationship so far. And I feel like the right thing to do to keep them close as they support their mother. It even made sense that Martin would soften to the idea of Eva as part of the family given their brief scene at the start of this storyline. Meanwhile, NO from Kat. lol. And she's already questioning the DNA test...OF COURSE SHE IS. But again...that avail...her and Eva being the SAME age. Twins. I just felt the writers are really foreshadowing that heavy. Meanwhile, the SilkPress saga is far from over.   I love the parade of Ted Visitors. LMAO!!! I thought Dani vs Ted was pretty good. But I about fell out when Anita walked up in there like old school Sonny Corinthos. And I hollered with Anita wiping the floor with Ted with Dani in the background like Jason Morgan. Watch your step, Theodore. Anita was giving Boss Bitca and I was living.    That said...I didn't like Anita making poor Eva cry. But as was said above...the stuff with Hayley is still too fresh on the Duprees' mind. So sadly understandable, Anita set down the law.    Uh oh. Dani saw Vanessa with Joey. Granted they are not the BFFs, but I do hope that that means we are getting a Dani/Vanessa scene. And I loved that we got another step in the B storyline. Doug fighting (and failing) in his addiction. Meanwhile, Vanessa resisted hers. And Joey did not look happy.    And saying the best for last. I LOVE Nicole vs Silk Press Sheila. Ooooo Nicole got under her skin good. And I loved it. I also hollered at Silk Press couldn't even be fake nice for 5 whole minutes to her. DD did soooooooo good. The body language. The looks. The inflections on just the right words. I LOOOVVVE that confrontation and looking forward to more since she clearly verbally cracked SilkPress's face. Meanwhile, I was just as taken aback at Ted showing up at Silk Press Sheila's place. I also thought it was another fantasy. Nope. And then SilkPress put the moves on him and went just a little more cray cray in the coda.    Just such a great episode.

    • Nope still in development. ABC/Disney are having their upfronts today though, so there's a very slight hope we might get an update.
    • Has anyone ever posted January and February 1974? I can't find them in the 'Look Back to 75' thread. Thanks.
    • Did January and February 1974 DSN ever get posted? I can't seem to find it in this thread.
    • I agree. Especially after SilkPress got back to her apartment and started to mock Nicole. Her dislike for Nicole and seeing her as a threat to her getting Teddy Bear is growing worse. So I could see her pulling a kidnapping on Nicole at some point. If anything she was going there to poke the bear and got pressed (pun unintended) when the bear gathered her.   Completely understandable.

    • I swear this entire time I thought Roman knew about the Phillip/Vivian letter lol.  I do like how mature Roman/Kate are as a couple.  It makes me sad the new writers never got a chance to write for John/Marlena. I agree with @AbcNbc247 that the Felicity stuff is a bit after school special-y.  I am pretty sure that (most) of the viewing audience is aware that a grown man should not be shouting at any teenage girl especially one with disabilities.  Just let Xander apologize and move on. Linsey Godfrey was in her Sarah baby voice mode today and it irritates me to no end.   I know it's a cutesy thing her and Xander do but it's annoying. Bringing Kevin back is strange, but I do like the use of history.  I do think Rex probably could have been used instead, but whatever.  I don't care about Rex much either lol.
