Lorraine Broderick as AMC head writer

Eden from the early 80s was Black and STern's Playboy channel soap.

Eden was from the early 90s. It's probably better than their soap runs, although that's not saying much. Soap fans can spot Diana Barton as a psycho who seduces her married ex in a locker room, and Jeff Griggs as the dead husband of the lead heroine, who appears in fantasies and flashbacks 500000 times to have sex with her. And Jack Armstrong as the wacky lifeguard/musician who loved the ladies. Armstrong was a lot better here than he was on the soaps.

Maybe I *should* go to bed lol--I meant 90s (after that whole rant). I believe episodes of Eden were condensed and released to video or something...

I can't wait to hear what went down behind the scenes and who or what prompted Lorraine Broderick to come back. When do you think we'll hear something official?

Paging DavidEvanSmith. Your presence is requested in the Lorraine Broderick thread.

LOL that's random. Where has he been anyway? :P

I know Agnes Nixon doesn't have much power anymore (even if she is still hired as a consultant by ABC) but I strongly suspect she played some sort of part. It's too bad the lady is way too classy to ever even slightly bad mouth anyone, otherwise her website would be brilliant gossipy fun right now :)

Someone should submit a question about the headwriter change. In her response, Agnes should curse out Pratt. That would be classic.

I'm interested in finding out what the consensus is on Black and Stern when they wrote for Falcon Crest, considering they were writing when the show was at the height of its success.

Ben (Peter Parros) was introduced on ATWT in 1996, and was the only one of the new characters who would stay in the long term. This is sort of like what happened to Days in 1980 with the "St Valentine's Day massacre"- you know, when longtime characters were axed and nobody cared about the new characters except Liz Chandler (Gloria Loring).

Awwww...Eric...like if you didnt know DES already. You know what he's up to!biggrin.gif I havent seen him post here or GMOB board. He must be busy with all his men....hehe

I was going to say the same thing... Talk about a blast from the past!

Yup it is....

Carly scheming to marry the father of her baby and have it before midnight, and then her 6 months as a millionaire trying to hide the truth was one of my all time fave storylines. Carly under Lorraine Broderick was such a better character than she is now.

It's funny how Carly has evolved. I am glad you grew up just a bit. Of course I can still see her scheming to get what she wants.

They were the ones who had Kirk vanish, yes.

All I ever saw with Eddie was a lot of tics. He got way too much airtime too early, and I don't think Marston was able to handle it. The lesser amount of airtime he got on OLTL is probably one of the reasons he managed to last 4-5 years without imploding for good.

I agree..way too much Eddie Silva and Georgia. I couldnt stand either one. I was glad when they left. Another of Broderick awful characters to arrive in Oakdale.

As The World Turns had to recover from the shock of Douglas Marland's sudden death in 1993. Caso was still EP at the time, and Packer and Backus were placed in charge as co-HWs- they worked under Marland, had the task of finishing off his storylines or starting up new storylines and new characters that Marland had planned prior to his death. So ATWT was still doing OK for a couple of years, and ratings were still decent.

Culliton took over as HW in 1995, and he wrote the John/Lisa medical malpractice storyline that led to an Emmy nomination for writing, and is regarded as one of the best post-Marland storylines. Granted, the show 1993-95 was not quite as good as when Marland wrote it, but I think it was generally expected at the time because of the colossal shoes that had to be filled. The show at least didn't deviate too much from his vision. Marland had planned the introduction of the Kasnoffs and, apparently, of Carly as well.

1995 was the real start of the troubles, though, because Caso was replaced by John Valente in P&G's big reshuffling of EPs where JFP went from GL to AW. It was disastrous for all three P&G shows from which they have or could never recover, even though P&G was back then quick enough to react after the damage had been done. But all that's happened since tells you P&G treated its soaps as an afterthought like they wanted out of the business.

Valente got rid of some beloved actors, most notably Patricia Bruder (Ellen Stewart) who'd been on ATWT since 1960. Then Culliton was replaced at the start of 1996 by Black and Stern, who were better known for their time on Falcon Crest and for the pornographic show mentioned (actually called "Return to Eden"). It's really frightening how bad things went, even though there was only one good thing on ATWT in 1996- the conclusion to John/Lisa where John humiliated Lisa on the big screen (look it up on youtube). But there were stupid storylines, new characters nobody cared about, etc- and all this in ATWT's 40th anniversary. At one point, the critics said it was the worst show on TV! You really wonder how much of it was sabotage, to this day many people believe Valente sabotaged ATWT in reaction to his removal from AW.

I think it has to be remembered that Daytime wasn't quite as bad then as it is now, even though the shock value and wackiness of Reilly's Days was all the rage at the time much to the detriment of the entire genre. The most disturbing thing is that the crapness of ATWT in 1996-97 is no different at all from the garbage being passed for Daytime in the last 5 or so years.

Pretty much

AMC and ATWT are two different animals, so what worked for AMC might not have worked for ATWT. On the surface the two shows come off as very traditional (or at least they used to), but I think that's where the similarity ends. From my standpoint, ATWT always used a more cohesive style of storytelling, was full of relatable characters who seemed like real people, and used a very serious, earnest tone, while AMC was more likely to use contrasting elements in their approach to storytelling (fantasy storylines juxtaposed with intelligently done, contemporary issues-based stories) and characters (contrasting the very real, e.g., Joe, Ruth, and Mona, with the outrageous, e.g., Phoebe, Billy Clyde, Opal), as well as lots of comedy in the form of social satire and camp. The contrasts and the comedy combined to help form the AMC template, and they are what drew me to the show in the first place. Agnes, Wisner, and Lorraine (and yes, even Megan, to an extent, in her own little dumbed-down manner) executed the template expertly, for the most part. I think that Felicia and Lorraine tried to bring these AMC-style elements to ATWT, while still trying to keep true to what ATWT was all about, and it didn't quite gel.

I'm going to change subjects slightly. But what storylines or characters would you like to see Lorraine Broderick bring to the frontburner? After commenting in the Daniel Kennedy thread, I really feel the show needs to explore the Colby / Petey coupling. There's too much history with their families to ignore. The show must put Daniel Kennedy on contract; he's too good to lose.

I feel like Daniel Kennedy's agent now.

It's hard to say because a lot of the people who are staying with the show seem to be dead end characters, at least for me.

I would like to see her give more focus to Natalia.

I would like to see Jesse lose his job on the police force and go to work as a PI or something else. I'd like to see Natalia's principles clash with her family loyalty, and her choosing her principles, with some fallout with Jesse and the Hubbards.

I would like to see Erica seriously question where her life has gone in recent years and have a lot of storyline with Adam, as they push each other's buttons and take each other back from the brink. Of course, David Canary may not be with the show much longer :(

I would like to see David move away from the baby obsession and get a new love interest.

I would like to see Jake thrown out of the hospital. He can go run a shelter or something else where he can try to lecture people and he can find some sort of outlet for his constant moral outrage.

The first thing on LB's agenda should (and might well) be to restore this show's families. GL died with its families so decimated and bare that they practically pushed all of the leftover characters together to form one big awkward family...and it was just depressing. I want the Kane crew to come back in fine form. Whether or not they reunite Erica and Jack, they need to keep their families intertwined. That's one reason why I wouldn't mind a Greenlee return. Bring back Greens, recast Lily and Reggie somewhere down the line maybe. Perhaps try again with Sean. The Chandlers...nuColby is a good way to start. Killing Stuart was not, but keep Scott around. Scott and JR as rivals is a natural. Unfortunately, the Chandler family is lacking in younger characters to bring back into the canvas. The Martins are not, however, and with Joe and Ruth retired and off the show (:(), it's important to keep the Martins on the show. Jake can FOAD, but recast Jamie pronto. Bring back Brooke, please! She's not a blood Martin or a Martin by marriage anymore, but she and Tad have always been on good terms, and I miss their friendship. The Hubbards are fine...just recast Randi. As for the rest...it's nice to still have fringe characters who can move between the major families. Opal is at home with the Martins as well as the Kanes and sometimes the Chandlers. David can stir crap up no matter where you put him.

I just feel that the show is extremely hollow right now. The foundation is falling apart, and it's just...daid. I don't like it.

The JR/Scott rivalry falls flat for me because JR is a whiny baby all the time, so this is nothing new, and Scott is a scold who goes around lecturing people while he's making out with his aunt. I'd rather see them become friends for a while before any rivalry.
