EW Exclusive: Malcolm's back on 'The Young and the Restless' ... but it's not who you think

by Lynette Rice

Fans of The Young and the Restless who’ve been holding out hope that the smoldering Shemar Moore will reprise his role as the tempestuous Malcolm Winters are in for a rude awakening … the dude’s never coming back! But his character is: EW has learned exclusively that Darius McCrary – best known for playing Eddie Winslow on the long-running ABC sitcom Family Matters – has signed a multi-year deal to assume the role beginning Nov. 18. His debut will air on Dec. 29.

“We are thrilled to have the character of Malcolm back on Y&R,” according to a statement from Maria Bell, the drama’s co-executive producer/head writer. “Malcolm, Neil Winters’ brother, has always been a catalyst to exciting stories. He’s coming back to town to see his brother and to reunite with his biological daughter, Lily Winters, as she fights for her life. Malcolm is a photographer … someone who lives on the edge and who always pushes the envelope.”

Though he left the sudser in 2005 to co-star in CBS’ Criminal Minds, Moore once entertained the thought of briefly returning to the show that made him a star. His reps could not be reached for comment, but it seems obvious that Moore’s busy schedule (Minds is about to air its 100th episode) – combined with the fact that Bell wanted the Malcolm character back full-time - made it impossible for Moore to return (one insider even said that Moore has been approached before about coming back to the show but it was clear that it wouldn’t work out because of his commitment to Minds).

McCrary will find a familiar face on the Y&R set; the Emmy-winning Bryton James (Devon) used to co-star as Richie Crawford on Family Matters, as well.

What the hell! Is Y&R on crack? He's doesn't look that much older then CK. Who can he get with? Oh, that's right he going to be put on recurring.

LMAO. I can't laugh anymore. I'm waiting for Carl, Harriet and Urkel to show up on Y&R soon. Though I'd much rather Laura, Judy or aunt Rachel

Wow!!!

Just...wow!!

No offense to Darius, whom I thought was a solid reason for FM's success and who usually found humor no matter how dumb the script, but why do I get the feeling he was cast mainly because he worked with Bryton and they didn't really care much about doing a big search for this part?

Unless he has drastically changed, which I know he might have, I can't see him as Malcolm.

I guess at least it isn't Jaleel White.

I do think Harriet would be a nice add to Y&R.

I will wait to see him in the role before I judge. It's only fair I guess.

Y&R intends to ultimately hire every former Family Matters cast member. Kellie Shanygne Williams will be the new Drucilla. I said it here first.

I think I saw him on L&O once or some crime- based series. I don't remeber how I felt about the character. All I remember is the best part of him in Family Matters was Carl going upside his head. Oh and Waldo :o:ph34r::lol: . Oh for the life of me I'm sorry I can't take this seriously. I'll concur if he proves to be an effective Malcolm but this is sooooo hard to picture. I'm only imagining if VR ever comes back  . Oh God....

The writing for the black character is so wretched, he will have his work cut out for him.

Can we please get Telma Hopkins a job on the show?

She can be Aunt Mary, who tells Neil and Malcolm that they aren't really related. Two weeks later, they're having sex on the living room sofa.
