Members Ann_SS
EB is busy keeping a high profile. Good for him. Victor is an extraordinarily popular character. All these interviews should cause his fans to flood Y&R will mail and phone calls on his behalf and their lives hellish. Unfortunately, if the ratings hold strong while he is away, Sony/Bells/Corday will stand strong in their negotiations with him. He will eventually have to take a pay cut to come back. Members bellcurve
If Braeden has invested well and if he finds stable work guest starring in roles or does theater, he could live off of that. It wouldn't be easy, but it'd be much better than SONY stripping him of his dignity. Watch them can MTS too.
Members JimTolkien
Nope, don't have one ounce of sympathy for his plight!!! What's with everyone thinking they are indispensable. And what's with everyone threatening or implying they will quit...you know what at this point DO IT ALREADY. As I keep hearing this American phrase, "put up or shut up" - this applies here. All this praise for MAB I find pretty ironic and reeks of "kissing &%#...she is the one that has helped to weaken this show further to the point that it has enabled CBS to cut the length of its licensing fee by more than a half (and using the bad economy as disguise). If she were actually writing and telling good stories and increasing the viewership (I mean adding new viewers) vs. losing over 1,000,000 since early spring 2008, then Sony wouldn't feel the need to ask people to take a pay cut (plus they have lost money too). I do agree on principle that they should not be conducting themselves in this manner, he has a contract in place and one would expect them to act in good faith for someone who has been on the show for that long and put in their time and dedication. Not to mention that I myself am angry that he had to find out from the Internet vs. someone speaking to him like a decent employer would. However with that said, they are are lots of other companies asking their employees to do the same and some are not even losing that much money but are trying to use this time to operate efficiently so that they don't have problems in the future. Heck, some companies are asking employees to take 3-6 months leave with no pay to cut costs but they will still have their jobs when they get back. I am bloody sick and tired of the whining - I no longer want to hear it and I no longer feel anything for these big cry babies. If EB thinks he is so important, explain to me again why the viewership hasn't doubled...let's see, maybe because he and the show and soaps have lost their appeal. I think I am going to have a couple questions for Mr. Moonves next month. (Heck, even he has taken a pay cut..and CBS executives and their salaries and payouts go hand in hand with the performance of the company now.). I can't wait to hear how CBS weighs in on this one. I am just not going to be surprised if EB doesn't come back and that Sony will take their chances on this one. Here's hoping that they all work this out because this show is hurting. Members Ann_SS
Great post, Jim Tolkien. As sympathetic as I am to the actors not wanting to take a pay cut, they act like they are above the other American workers who have been forced to take a pay cut or forced vacations or work without pay for an extended period of time. Also, the pretense that it is all Sony and the refusal to acknowledge the Bells' role in the situation is annoying. Braeden has a right to say what he wants to say, but Sony/Bell/Corday also have a financial bottom line that they are not going to ignore so that these actors can keep making bank. If Braeden cared about his dignity, he would not be out there doing these interviews which are basically begging fans to support him in the negotiations. Same goes for all these actors who whine about taking the paycuts and eventually do like Robin Strasser and Victoria Rowell who is begging for her job back. These people desperately want to keep or get back these good paying steady acting jobs. If they did not, they would give the shows the finger and walk away. At their ages, work is hard to find and even if they have invested well which I suspect isn't true for many of them, their stock portfolio has been hit like everyone else's. They have mortgages to pay on houses that they cannot easily sell in this economy, they have kids to put through college, they want to keep the good health insurance, and they have a nice lifestyle that they want to maintain. MTS took her pay cut so she may be safe enough, but you are right that there would be a temptation to have her stay away with Victor. We have not heard anything about Bergman. He may have quietly already taken his pay cut. He is no fool. He was fired from AMC so he knows that it can happen to him again.
Members MarkH
So, thanks to uber-publicist Charles Sherman, Braeden has been making pretty high profile rounds with his disgruntled interview. Using almost the same words each time, I've seen his piece with Michael Logan/TV Guide, Soap Opera Digest, and Entertainment Weekly (EW). Since EW is part of the Time-Warner "family", CNN picked up the story and featured it on its home page this morning. And, interestingly, it is one of the top-three most emailed stories this morning (see pic below). Braeden still sells magazines, and he still has enough name recognition that CNN puts him on their home page. And Sony is willing to throw this away. I'm so ready to throw Sony away. Literally. Where's my old Walkman?
Members JackPeyton
regardless if you like him or not he has a point, the contracts are unfair and one sided. the show can oust you any 13 or 26 week point, but you are stuck for years. Members Cat
The question at this point is: are Sony playing hard-ball just because they can in this economy? or is Y&R really hurting and does Sony need to cut costs as an emergency measure? If it's the former, Braeden has the right to feel eggregiously aggrieved. If it is the latter, Braeden and everybody else on that show should take one for the team. Otherwise there WILL be no show. And no livelihood.
Members Ann_SS
The entertainment industry is not immune from the economic turmoil going on. We know that ad revenue is down across all media. We know that CBS has slashed Y&R's licensing fee, rumor about 40/50%. Sony/Bell/Corday have to cut costs to continue produce Y&R and make a profit. I would not be surprised to hear that executives to crew at Sony/Bell/Corday have had to take cuts or give up bonuses or vacations with no pay to prevent massive lay offs. The actors, especially, the higher paid ones will have to take their share of the pain. It isn't like it is only Y&R. Their actors just seem to make the most noise. Steve Burton said flat out that everyone at GH had to take pay cuts. TK was not happy with his last negotiations. This means that ABC is also playing hardball. The soap actors are going to have find other side projects to make up these pay cuts or find other work. The whining is getting old.
Members JackPeyton
ITA! 100% I do think that contracts are unfair to actors tho, but actors work in a business thats not fair to them so..
Members JimTolkien
I do think it is a combination of both. But at some point I think CBS/Sony will come out of this once ad revenues start to pick up (I hope). But I truly don't believe it will matter in the long run as far as soaps go..the writers are not innovative and creative enough to keep up with cable (and especially not MAB and her crew). They have written nothing that can stop traffic..and make you go...what the heck was that - I need to watch it. Heck at 12:30pm today..I might watch Miracle on 34th Street on cable vs. Y&R.
