Bill Bauer had another that was Hillary's brother? I gotta go read up on that. Makes no sense why they never brought him.

I do think that tying Johnny to Trudy would've been the most sensible seeing as the character wasn't seen in decades. Her history was practically a blank canvas that could've been filled in with anything. That's something I just don't get with writers. Instead of creating all these new characters out of nowhere, why not use an old character that hasn't been on the canvas for decades and tie a new, young character to them?

So seeing as you didn't care for Johnny that much, I am guessing you weren't keen on his pairing with Roxie either? I know a lot of people on another forum I used to post on used to go on about them like they were some great romance.

Not tying new people to characters from the past can only be explained if TPTB are ignorant of history, and don't do any research.

As for Roxie, I loathed all things Shayne. I hated Reva, Hawk, Minnie Pearl (errr, Sarah), Roxie and Rusty with a passion. I did not want them on the show at all, so Roxie's story with Johnny was a turn-off for me.

I'm find out more and more each day on this board that so many people hated the Shayne clan with a deadly passion. I didn't mind them (as I love Reva), but even I have to admit from the time I started watching (the early 90s) to the end of the show that upon the time KZ returned to the show that her clan ate up the show.

I recall reading an interview with Mary Stuart who said that she was slated to join GL in 1987 after the cancellation of Search for Tomorrow. She was supposed to play the role of Hannah Bauer. Like Jack, Lainie, and their kids, Hannah (to my knowledge) had never been mentioned before. I wonder if Hannah was going to be Johnny's mother originally.

I might (MIGHT) have been able to tolerate Reva in small doses, but once she and her loudmouthed, abrasive, and irritating family began to eat up the show, my initial distaste for the Shaynes grew to abject and utter loathing. The asinine, cretinously-stupid stories given to Reva in later years (the ghost, the clone, the time traveling} truly destroyed any remnants of the "real" Guiding Light, which had always been predicated on recognizable human interaction and family drama. I NEVER would have authorized Zimmer's return to the show after the character had been killed off. Her absence allowed TGL to temporarily feel as if it could be saved.

Right. Hanna Bauer was never part of the TGL's history and canon, and could not have realistically been part of "our" Bauer family. The show did not offer her the obvious role of Trudy Bauer, which would have made the most sense. Viewers always appreciated the likes of Pat Falken Smith, Douglas Marland, Harding Lemay, etc., at least in part because they studied, used, and added to their shows' histories. TGL was never lucky enough to have a writer do that in its final 15 years or so.

Sad, but true. In the early 1980s, I watched in horror as the show killed off Bill Bauer (again!) for the sake of a dreadful and meaningless story, and then went on a rampage, eliminating Hillary Bauer, Mike Bauer, Hope Bauer, Sarah McIntyre, Justin Marler, Kelly Nelson, Amanda Spaulding, etc., etc.. etc. At the time, producer Gail Kobe pontificated about getting rid of the show's "dead wood," but that asinine comment was akin to a new Star Trek producer announcing that they would eliminate the Enterprise's "dead wood": Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, and Scotty. TGL fans were furious, particular because so many of the characters who replaced our favorites were badly written and forgettable.

I've always felt that Reva wouldn't've been a big problem if she had ambitions and was rooted a bit more to reality. I think that the closest she's been to that was about when Reva was on her own and trying to find herself after nearly committing suicide. It was refreshing to see her try and piece her life back together with help from Roxie and Fletcher, and she was working as writer then. Sadly, it all got tossed out the window and Reva started chasing Kyle again and later Josh.

All of Reva's stories consisted of her chasing a man. We never saw the career ambition and drive that the women on the show had. I guess that is why I am loving the early 90 episodes of GL b/c ALL the women had drive and didn't allow men consume their every being. That's why Holly, Gilly, and Vanessa have always been my faves on GL.

I doubt that Ed and Mike being SORASed had any part of hurting the show as Don and Mart were (and still are) well-received by fans. Nothing is wrong with SORASing when it is done correctly. Ed and Mike were done correctly.

at Bridget pushing that poor woman in the wheelchair off into a passing orderly's arm. She had me rolling too over how she kept snatching that hat off her head despite Lillian telling her to wear it. I just enjoy her and Kat together. This is a friendship, a sisterhood on soaps that seriously needs to be duplicated. We rarely see anything like it nowadays.

While I don't generally care for stories about women moaning about wanting kids, I do when it comes to Maureen. Nancy Curlee did it in a way where I felt for Maureen and it wasn't overkill. I was touched watching Ed feel saddened as Dr. Sedgewick and Maureen discussed her options about having a baby.

Dylan is so damn hot. IDC what anyone says. Morgan Englund is sex on a stick. I'm right alongside Bridget in lusting after him. If I were Eleni, I would've mounted him in that truck.  Screw driving lessons. We'd be having other lessons.

I wonder how things would have netted out with Bridget and Kat had Curlee and team been allowed to do the Bridget/David relationship they wanted. I liked Kat/David, but always felt that David was weirdly Bridget's soulmate (even if they never became romantic).

David doesn't show up for another year or so, so definitely interesting to see how he's introduced to Bridget/Kat (as I can't for the life of me remember his introduction).

Wasn't he introduced having something to do someone's wallet being stolen? Was it Roger or Ross...? Or maybe that was another character on another soap.

But I would've never liked Bridget/David being together. I always enjoyed the fact that they were simply friends and nothing more. I'm glad that Curlee was halted with this decision. Their friendship was more powerful than anything. Especially, that scene when Bridget runs into David's arms at the courthouse when he's found not guilty for killing Vinnie (aka the future Nick on Another World).

Let me go watch that scene right now.

David also helped Bridget deliver Peter, and I don't think I've seen those episodes since they aired (were they ever on YouTube?). Bridget/David just had a really great bond that I don't think the characters ever really shared with anyone else.

Patrick Mulcahey later tried to pair them as well after Curlee left and he was Co-HW with like 100 other people - he later said that was the exact reason he quit the show because CBS/P&G just wouldn't allow them do an interracial relationship.

Oh wow. P&G lost a stellar writer in Patrick Mulcahey, but I didn't want Bridget/David together as I always felt they had a sibling relationship if anything.

I am over here crying over the scene of David being cleared.

This scene is so powerful and relevant today. Sadly, we'll never get something like this on daytime today. Guiding Light at its best was truly ahead of its time.

    • Happy 18th Birthday, Sophia! I like that Tate gave her a birthday party. And that Marlena counseled him about whether or not he has feelings for Sophia, and his relationship with Holly. I like how messy Tate is and I hope he continues to be messy. He just needs to have more argument/fight scenes with Doug III

Days just needs to work a little bit more on establishing better chemistry between Tate and Sophia, but I still think that’s mostly due to Rachel Boyd. Sometimes, I think that Sophia might secretly be scheming, but with the way RB plays it, (if that’s what they’re going for), it doesn’t seem to be working. Tate was also really sweet and dorky during the party too The drug scenes didn’t do much for me though. I don’t mind that Kevin panicked and ran off with the drug once he heard Steve and Shawn coming, but I felt like that story was the weakest part of today. But I am interested in seeing what happens next. And I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Steve and Shawn had matching jackets Btw, I see Mayor Price established a quid pro quo with Xander today lol I wouldn’t mind that being more than just a plot point. It could lead to some pretty good drama if it’s handled correctly. And it would be a lot better than Xander declaring war on Sweet Bits/Chanel and Felicity.  And Stephanie, finally having her mother to confide in about her life, her relationship with Alex, etc. has been one of the best things about the Paula/Jeanne episodes. The book thing still seems very Ron-like though, mostly because it’s so centered around Alex, sort of like how GH used to make storylines about Liz all about Finn or Franco Hopefully, Stephanie talks to Kayla about the book. I’d like to hear more of her perspective on it. I also like that Kayla and Marlena were there for each other as well. These are such better ways to use all three of them. And, we got an update about John One other thing I’ve noticed about the Paula/Jeanne episodes (except for the ones that are worked on by Jamey) is that they’re longer than Ron episodes. Episodes usually clock in at around 40-41 minutes now, as opposed to 35-37, or as short as 31.
    • Also Victor being the obstacle for Kyle/Claire feels forced. If anything it should be Diane. Diane has a history of having issues with the Newmans, doesn’t she? Jack could be the one trying to reel her in while she’s meddling in Kyle and Claire’s relationship. They’re making the characters of Diane, Victoria, Nick, Sharon be way too complacent when they could have a stronger role in the younger characters like Mariah/Tessa, Kyle/Claire etc
    • A year later we had these ratings for the week of May 11-17 1987. This was probably the last time the CBS soaps (at least til Dallas’ finale) ranked this high. Dynasty had already ended its season.  CBS reran the Dallas Early Years movie on Saturday night against Golden Girls’ season finale, which was the failed Empty Nest back door pilot.  Interestingly a repeat Family Ties was #1 this week. The week before the season finale of Family Ties beat out Cosby as well, but it was Cheers that beat them both out with Diane’s exit.

    • Hello to everybody!

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.

    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.

    • I kind of assume they're toning down Rachel's bad seed tendencies a bit to make it less obvious if they're going for her as the shooter. At least that's what I hope they're doing - I've really enjoyed Rachel being a bratty evil DiMera princess and Marlena finally getting a grandchild she deserves.
