You're totally right, would any celebrated actress want to return after that? There are so many unknowns about Ms. Hayman's feelings, or even Ellen Holly's at that exact time, because there wasn't a platform. Regretfully Lillian Hayman leaves us in 1994, fairly young at 72. Also, I don't think you're wrong in your perception - there are a lot of feelings about Rauch completely clearing the canvas of all people of color after he fired Hayman and Holly. However, I remember the canvas differently (because I started watching regularly in the summer of '85 at age 9!) He does fire two veteran actresses who helped put "One Life to Live" on the map. He keeps Al Freeman, Jr recurring (yet he's an Emmy winner!) Total mistreatment of a glorious talent. Rauch hires - Blair Underwood as Bobby Blue, a bad boy opposite Laura Carrington as upper-class Lisa Baron. There is also a father for Lisa, Bart Baron, played by Lloyd Hollar; and Bart's mistress Stella (who I think was involved with Bobbie). Then Ed Hall's doctor-son Joshua returns, played by newcomer Guy Davis, to date Lisa - but it's weird because his adoptive mother Carla, and adoptive grandmother Sadie aren't on the canvas? A bit of star power with John Amos (from "Good Times") cast as Officer Bill Moore, part of the Llanview PD. My theory is Paul Rauch wanted to 'elevate' "One Life to Live" to 'prime time', which prime time of the 80's was nothing compared to the gritty social relevancy of the 70's. I think to Rauch, Sadie, Carla, and Ed, were "socially relevant", so they had to go or be muted - which was a superficial move on his part AND it was ignorant - given his appreciation for stars of the stage (as he had been on "Another World"). Even with seven characters of color on the canvas, each performer with great charisma they were not prominent in the story. There was diversity in Al, Maria, and Cord Roberts, and Kim (the late Wai Ching Ho), but save Cord, as you said and even Erika Slezak remarked this was now a show about the wealthy and the white - not at all "One Life to Live's" original genesis theme. As for Holly coming back... interesting question, it seems the creative differences were between Holly and the producer, Joe Stuart - who was known for being hard, I don't think it was ever between her and the network - but someone might know more.
