I think 1986's GL is way worse than 1988. I'm not suggesting 1988 was a masterpiece, but 1986 was such a disaster (from what I've seen). It was rough getting through some of the 1986 episodes. I eventually just stopped because life is too short and I was not enjoying the show. As dull as 1988 GL could be, there was always something that was catching my interest. 1986 GL rarely if ever had that.

The Sonni storyline might have been convoluted but I didn't care because Forbes was so fantastic in the role. It could have gone for another two years and I wouldn't have cared. The only boring parts for me were the Josh/Reva sections when Forbes were not in the story.  It was Reva's inclusion in the story that dragged down in the story for me. I think the problem is that I wanted Sonni to win so Reva was just a gnat getting in the way.

Forbes was great!  She was only 22 when she started Guiding Light.  I wish she stayed, but I guess that is why Roger and Alexandra got together.

I agree about Reva.  I don't get the hype. That show was obsessed with her!

Now that I've figured out to use the translate subtitles feature on YT, I've been watching Springfield Story and had a few thoughts:

1. I started with some 1983 episodes. Most that I've watched so far seem to be from the brief period where Pat Falken Smith wrote the show after Marland's exit. I kind of like what she was doing. The break-up of Kelly and Morgan's marriage was well done, actually exploring the inappropriateness of their relationship in the beginning. Same with the subtle but obvious cracks starting in Alan and Hope's marriage, which was handled in a very ham-handed way once Kobe and Long took over.

2. I don't recall ever seeing the episodes where Wayne Tippit briefly replaced Chris Bernau as Alan. I remember him quite well from Search for Tomorrow. Even though he wasn't that much older than Bernau, he came across as a lot older and the scenes with Hope were a little on the icky side.

3. I was impressed by scenes where Hope was really letting Alan have it about something or other, then I realized it seemed that way because she was screaming at him in German, LOL.

4. They erroneously credited Jennifer Cook as Kristen Vigard. Ouch.

5. I am SO confused by the story about Maureen's ex-boyfriend who showed up just as Ed proposed to her. (Matt? Is that his name?) The translations are hard to follow (I was joking with my roommate that it might be easier to follow them in German) but he comes across as a complete jerk. A cute one, but a jerk. Not sure if he wants her to go with him to support him while he does his residency, or that he is offended by the idea of her supporting him while he does his residency. Glad he didn't last long.

6. Hope set Ed up with TRISH? What? Wasn't she still dating Mike? It seemed that way when Alan was pursuing Trish later that year. Continuity issue because of the writer change, I guess?

7. I switched over to a different playlist when I noticed there was one for 1981. I thought, GREAT! Maybe they have the episodes with Alan and Rita's affair! Darn it, no.

8. As difficult as it is to follow some of the dialogue, I really appreciate this because it's plugging in a bunch of holes. So I'll keep trying to detangle the translations.

@Contessa Donatella Awesome pictures! It seemed like there aren't any pictures of the year she left.

In reading up on Guiding Light I saw Holly had a brother named Andy. He was written out. Anyone remember him?

Who is Samantha Marker named after?

As far as I know, Samantha wasn't named for any family member on either the Scott or Marler side.

Thanks. I forgot to correct the name to Marler!  Duh!  I never understood why they didn't just recast the character and bring her back over Julie.

I have another question.  What is the name of the black guy on the island with Adam Malik/Roger?

I am laughing at the July 4, 1989 episode, because the FBI agent gave Maureen an update on Roger and was flirting with her!

If I had my way, instead of heading to the cabin, Maureen would have hid at Rogers place...but, he was still with Mindy at that time. Sigh!  LOL

Oy, the German episodes really do not give two hoots about using the proper credits. Actors would be credited long after they were gone, and they rarely updated when actors took over roles.

I would love to see the Alan/Rita affair too.

Ed/TRISH? That must've been a blink and miss moment. I'd watch more of the fall of '81 if I didn't find Anna Stuart as Vanessa so jarring.

I always thought Reva should have a gay brother, or son, who would be as man hungry as she was.  It would never happen at that time or with P & G...(didnt that boring Nuke on ATWT never kiss???) but how hilarious it would be and set TV's across the south and midwest on fire... Promo voice over "Look out...there's a NEW slut in Springfield!" and then show Rusty eyeing up Phillip's banana hammock!

They kissed several times, then there was a huge boycott that scared P&G, then after backlash to the boycott they began kissing again.

I believe this persists as an error because they were one of the vignettes for a special episode & notably they did not kiss when everyone else did. It may have been for Valentine's Day, not sure whether it was that or holiday with mistletoe, etc.

Amen, lol!!

I'm tempted to compile a list of all the actors from TGL whom I find/found the most desirable, and see how many SONers have the great taste to agree with me!🙃

Bwahahahahaha!😝

Thank you! Wish his name was brought up more after he left. They mention Laura and Solomon. Two people made up out of nowhere.

Is it just routine taken aback reaction that any temp provokes or was there something specific about it being Anna, or was it just being NotMaeve?

Was Sophia Landon Greier also a tempVan? Or was she just a temp Donna for Anna?

Ewww at them even thinking of Frank kissing Samantha.  Poor Dylan ended up having to be the older man. LOL

Henry being a hypocrite as usual.

Who were the older couple at the BBQ?  Seemed like they were just ignored by everyone. Not the best BauerBBQ to me.

Wow...besides Roger and Sonni..the show was so bad and boring. I didn't realize they were so desperate to make Frank viable that they throw poor Sam at him! I love AM wearing a tennis sweater, on the 4th of July in the midwest, just to offset him from Dylan (which reminds me, no one ever comments on the heat or bugs at the BBQ) The older couple were Johnny's parents, who for some reason Long got rid of Bea and had them and the Shaynes running the boarding house...(no one paid attention to them as no one knew who the hell they were) The Lainie actress would have made a good Meta Bauer. Guess what Rick, no one cares that Meredith left you or that she exists.

Ed is such a dick here. Holly is living with him, and he is screwing her, but he is going to marriage counseling and he says he loves Mo? (I love that Ed's latest mistress knows where the number of his future mistress,  Lillian is..) Mo is a real wimp here...she is moaning on her love of Ed and not kicking Holly's ass out of her house? Forget sad sack Ed, I would want the big ass house with the pool and t that cool fireplace..) But then Mo was horning on Fletcher (she has terrible taste.) Everyone but Chelsea thinks it is aokay that Mo moves out and Ed's ex wife who he hasnt seen in years moves in and he is banging her?

I really didn't realize that Long's second tenure was so bad..I guess I was too into Sonni/Solita and Roger to see how boring and odd it was.

The house was Ed's that he had bought for Rita long before Mo came into the picture so I'm gathering that he owned the house and Mo didn't own the house.

I had forgotten that Sam had a crush on Frank, but it didn't last long before Sam was moved into Dylan's orbit.  Dylan/Sam were a cute couple and had OG Justin come back onto the canvas instead of the recast.. I think it would have been an interesting forbidden love coupling.   If I recall Justin didn't exactly think Reva was all that, which was refreshing.

You got that right!  I felt for those two actors who played Johnny's parents.  They were TOTALLY ignored by everyone, even their own son! Everyone raves about the Bauer BBQ, but it seemed boring to me.  Ed, Maureen and Holly are horrible hosts.

Johnny and Chelsea were making out in front of everyone and people walked by and said nothing.

Agreed about Ed/Holly and Maureen.  Michelle at least spoke up!  LOL

I also never got why people wore colors that weren't even half way patriotic.

She was legally married to him and lived with him for years in that house. She absolutely had a claim on it, at least half of it. And Ed openly living with Holly and committing adultery? She could have probably won the house in a divorce case. The problem for her was that Ed and Claire never allowed her to adopt Michelle. Ed could have used that as leverage.

All that because she briefly lusted after Fletch in her heart.

When you think about it, an Ed/Mo breakup at this point should have been way jucier and more dramatic than it ended up being.
