Y&R Rowell interview

Roger Newcomb just linked the full article, but this quote is Y&R specific.

When you left Y&R, you stirred up controversy by complaining about the lack of African-Americans involved with the show.

Color television isn’t color television until there is integration of all people behind the camera. When I came on the show, we shot to No. 1 and stayed there. The audience is predominantly African-American women. Twenty-five million people watch the show domestically, and that’s not counting the 22 foreign countries in which we air, including those on the continent of Africa. Those stats are not lost on me. While it was wonderful to hear the accolades from so many blacks and non-blacks who said, “Wow, you represent,” I said, “Thank you, but I don’t feel represented behind the camera.” There were no people of color doing our hair and makeup; no writers of colors on the show in 37 years. If that’s controversy, fine. I think it’s controversial that that hasn’t changed in so many decades. When you’re in a position of power, you can’t just sit there and gloat and collect your paycheck. You’re not put in that position by accident; you’re put there by the design of a higher power, and you’d better make a difference. I give that message everywhere I go.

Wow, Victoria.

I love you.

But YOU weren't the reason the show went to #1, it went there uuuuuh 2 years before you arrived?

And the audience is predominantly AA? 25 million viewers? Is she counting 5 mil for each day? How does she know? Who says? I've never heard of this before? I'm confused, is she just making some of the things up?

The show was #1 well before she ever came there. She's talking generally too, not with African American viewers alone. This woman comes off as totally full of herself sometimes that it's hard for me to take her seriously.

Seems like she assume that 5 million DIFFERENT people each day watch the show.

I'm confused, is she just making some of the things up?

Wouldn't surprise me, I mean she is the reason the show "shot to No. 1."

Eric Braeden doesn't even say crap like this, she really needs to get over herself.

Yes. I like her. A lot. But she keeps shooting herself in the head. Just like some posters around here. Continuously. Unstoppably.

It makes me sad. Everytime I read something like this it makes it clear that VR is not coming back any time soon. I know I need to just accept it, but there is such a huge hole on the show where Dru used to be. Damn.

I agree, don't get me wrong, I like her as an actress and she makes some valid points. However, she lets her ego get the best of her in interviews and her points become wrapped up in it.

God, I love this woman!

I agree with Rakesh.

If there were more people this passionate about Y&R on today, before and behind the screen, the soap world would be a better place, even if she's a bit off.

There's a difference between being passionate about the genre and crediting yourself as the reason the show shot to #1...

I don't doubt her passion, but her ego is a major turn off.

Ego can go a long waY. It's too bsd it got her off the show; but, again, she would've been watered down or driven crazier if shr stayed.

I'm glad she's exactly the way she is, honestly. I hope she finds success in the near future.

She was driven crazy by Latham towards the end. I hated that version of Dru.

Best of luck to her, but I guess I can see how her personality might rub some the wrong way.
